Well stannis left Melissandre the witch back at dragonstone...due to Devos didn't like the witch or her dark magic, I guess davos the onion knight thought it was dirty...oh pooh....

In reality Stannis would of use the dark magic and use magic it like it was Secretariat.

It is very possible that, had Melissandre been there, the battle would have gone differently because of her numerous powers over fire and magical fire (which wildfire is, since dragons being present in the world enhances its creation). However, Stannis followed his advisors (and pride) which told him that if he won while Melissandre was present, she would always be considered the one who won the kingdom for him. Who knows? It's an intriguing possibility.

I believe Melissandre was left back because Stannis' saga is still way to go, they surely can't get rid of such a powerful pretender in one episode no matter how awesome it was. Also this last episode (albeit the lack of boobies being flashed around) confirms one thing... to put it briefly: GOT is da shyt.

I especially dug when they chopped the guy's head in half and then that other guy on a diagonal. Reminds me of really bad horror movies. I just screamed GOOOOOOREEEEEE.

Melissandre is quite limited in what she can do. Not to give away more of the story to those who haven't read the books. but that seems to be how the author views "magic". It's there, but has a nasty tendency to bite the user in the ass. So in the books, the wizards and demons are kept at a minimum.
