Seven noble families fight for control of the mythical land of Westeros. Political and sexual intrigue is pervasive.

I just picked up the series, but so far it's pretty brilliant. It's on HBO, but like everything else you can stream the episodes online.

I've read all the books twice, seen all the tv-eps, reading the authors blog and dress up as elf on conventions.

Maybe not the last part... I really like this series though, very machiavellian plot that defies the genre's cliches. Because it's on HBO the production values are the highest possible and it shows.

Ballsy show. They don't give a f%$k about whacking popular characters.

Not usually that into fantasy, but have heard great things about it from people whose taste I trust.

Will be checking it out.

Good show. I laughed when I saw this guy on the show

Prior to Game of Thrones, I had only seen him play as the funniest character in the movie Elf.

The Killing, on AMC, was also very well made - a follow-up season might be in the works.

Just watched the first episode of this. I can tell I'm going to like it. Anything dealing with the medieval era is awesome.

Def one of my favorites right now. Started reading the books but got discouraged after leaving it on the plane. Wish my lifestyle was conducive to having a dog cuz I love that northern inuit breed featured on the show http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northern_Inuit_Dog

Great show. When I watched the conclusion, all I could say was: "They nailed it."
I've read all the books in the series.

Are the books hard to read? I'm not used to too many subplots and characters and prefer simpler tales revolving around one protagonist.

I just finished watching the first season, and frankly I was blown away. If you're a guy who likes history, war, and politics, this show is like porn to you. Can't wait for the second season.

The books are much better than the show, and the show is not bad at all. In my opinion, it's the greatest fantasy series there is. They're not difficult to read at all, it's extremely well done. They are long however and can be time consuming/addicting.

I can't get over the acting in the show though, pretty disappointing (or maybe I expected too much).

They scaled down the battles due to budget constraints. But the books rock. A friend got me hooked on them years ago.

Anyone watch Game of Thrones?

It's excellent, the books (at least the first three) are the masterpieces of fantasy literature. Original, witty, exciting, realistic but magical at the same time, all the stuff that popular fantasy authors like Ted Williams and Robert Jordan will never be. The TV series took the books to the heart and were done perfectly. I would recommend it to anyone with all my heart in both its forms.

The only problem is that the author of the series, George R.R. Martin, has been stuck in some kind of a writer's block and, after publishing the not so great but still awesome 4th book (Feast for Crows), took almost 7 years to write the 5th (Dance of Dragons). The 5th book, despite all that waiting and rewriting, ended up extremely weaksauce, with almost all of the major and interesting characters dead, and the remaining ones stuck in indecisiveness and private fantasies and dreams. Nothing happened throughout all of its 1000 pages, there were a billion lame new characters (who also get killed) and new cliffhangers, and it was a major disappointment.

So while I love both the books and the show, I fear for its fate when it reaches Season 5. Both because the source material will become shitty, and because the 6th might not be ready by that time.

Maybe they'll rewrite the later seasons? :o
