For any guys who are worried about getting jumped, beat, etc., I would think about carrying pepper spray. You'd have to check with the local laws but, if I recall correctly (checked a few years ago about most of europe), you can carry it in most countries. Up here in Canada, you can't carry pepper spray intended for use on humans, but you can carry dog defense pepper spray and won't be charged if you use it on a human in self defence. I know it seems like a 'girly' weapon but it should incapacitate somebody for a short while so you can either throw some punches or run away. (Full disclosure, I've never actually used it on anyone)
