^^ Pretty much exactly that! I'm in a real love hate relationship with hte fitness industry since I love it enough to consider setting up a side biz as a personal trainer, but damn hate it because there's so many scam artists that milks it with so much impunity.
Protein powders have their use, but with the way they're marketed, so many think that it gives them super gainz and that they're mandatory to use if you're a serious lifter! Personally, I would only use a protein powder if I'm traveling! If I was looking to get swole... cooked beans would be my best friend

The easiest way to eat highly absorbable protein is liquid egg whites, I think. Egg white omelettes have become a staple of my diet.
That being said, I do use protein powder for morning shake, and also post-work out. The main part of my protein comes from food, and so the powder is actually what it's supposed to be: a supplement.
I'm going to try a pre-work out as an experiment (Transparent Nutrition), but unlikely to make it a habit.

^ with pre workout I feel like I can do 1/3 more cardio than without it. Probably partially a mental thing
First time few times I used it I felt like I was coked out but afterwards I got used to it

Also,i like Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard Whey. My favorite is the double rich chocolate. It's a good price, good quality,
tastes great protein, and lasts a while. I drink it on its own with water, use it in smoothies (frozen banana, protein, and peanut butter), or chocolate protein cookies!

When I was at peak fitness 25 years ago, I used to have a protein drink at the gym after every training session, using products made by a company in the UK called Nutrisport, which was very much at the budget end. My opinion is that the law of diminishing returns kicks in very early with supplements, and that you can spend a hell of a lot more on your protein powders and the like for very little gain.
