When it comes to buying protein, I'd honestly just buy the cheapest Whey protein possible. They are honestly almost all the same in ingrediants, a couple extra carbs or grams of fat or protein really doesn't matter. The only time I can see it mattering is if your on a keto diet where you need to keep your carbs very low. If thats the case then you need an Isolate Whey Protein.

Personally I wouldn't go the egg white (without the yoke) route. There's more to building muscle than loading up on protein.

Eating an accumulation of 100g of protein with complete vitamins and minerals from a variety of food sources is much better than 200g of protein from foods lacking a good nutrient profile.

(Arguably) Eating a high caloric diet will get you big but it won't speed up the time it takes to get you stronger. Eating a clean diet and not over eating has kept me ripped while getting stronger at the same pace.

I've actually gotten better strength results staying leaner and eating cleaner as opposed to bulking.

im not debating that, I agree with ya im not a proponent of the dirty bulking and big at all costs state of mind. Ive tried the bulking diet to see how my body would react to it and I found myself getting sluggish and a general feeling of malaise...I prefer adding mass cleanly and as a result slowly. I eat clean and nutritionally solid meals but I do adhere to a general plan of 45/35/20 p/c/f and sometimes getting to that 45% marker while staying in my calorie range isnt easy without some quick protein uptake, I dont do the egg whites but I could i tend to stick to the shakes for the quick boost, they may not have all the nutrients id hope for but I get those balanced throughout the day, sometimes its just about the protein. I love whole eggs, the fats are incredibly beneficial thus I cant be bothered to throw away a good yolk.

The Yolk has the majority of the nutrients anyway - like 85% I think. The whites don't have all that much bang other than protein which you can still get from cooking them... Iunno if its worth it downing them raw (the whites). The yolk is what feeds and sustains the baby chicken, that is where all the goodness is.

This is why I love me some poached or runny yolk eggs it makes me feel like a reptile with the yolk running down my chin. *evil sadistic laugh*

Another tip for good protein is Dry-Cottage Cheese. The pressed stuff gives you double the protein as the regular wet stuff. Indian cuisine has a lot of it and its called 'Panner' you can even grill it like tofu (no ugly soy). Its pricey (costs same amount as a decent block of cheese). But a really good slow digesting protein source. Greek yogurt is great also.

Didn't read all the above stuff, but spending a little more for Jay Robb is worth it.
The MuscleMilk, etc stuff has tons of fat, arsenic and other metals. Jay Robb is pretty clean.
Their might be other cheaper clean protein ----and I would love to find it and save money.

I make supershakes for my sons... loaded with protein and fat. Organic milk, almond milk, kool-aid with stevia, protein powder, almond butter, liquid cod liver oil, a spoonful of EV coconut oil, and a banana. 5 year old can already do 13 consecutive pullups.

The study authors took 38 overweight police offers, put them all on the standard low-calorie diet/resistance training you do when you're trying to lose weight, and split them into 3 groups: one got no extra protein, one took a standard whey shake, and one took casein. At the end of the study, the casein group dropped twice as much body fat and gained twice as much muscle as the whey group. (The no shake group got no lean mass gain at all, so whatever you do, take SOME kind of protein shake.)

I am a lazy man when it comes to protein shakes, I used to just buy basic bulk isolate and mix it with water. Tastes like garbage and I would get irritated that it would not mix. So I started to read the labels of the premixed liquids (muscle milk etc.) and wondered how they got it into suspension smoothly and without refrigeration and with a 'milk' consistency. Turns out its vegetable oil.

Add a tablespoon of oil to a water mix and its a different world. Vegetable oil if you are cheap, coconut oil (someone already mentioned) if you aren't and want it to taste good. Good Avocado oil also works but avoid olive oil...it adds a gross sharp taste to it.

I´m also lazy when it comes to protein shakes, and I´m not heavy lifting at the moment. However, I like to eat lean quark (German: Magerquark, or Topfen as we say in Austria).
One package (250g) has:
30g protein (80% Casein-, 20% Whey protein)
10g carbohydrates
0,6g fat
and costs 0,8€.
When I´m working out, I eat three of them a day. And it even tastes ok.

I always take Whey protein right after my workouts with some dextrose which is a simple carb and maltodextrin which is a complex carb. Ive seem some of the top fitness model guys like rob riches who do this also as a post workout shake.

This is the only protein I use these days... Theres a chocolate one to but its like 15 dollars more... Plus I use the vanilla for baking and cooking

I started writing down my protein intake every day. I write how many grams and at what time and from what source the protein came. Sad to say to get 180 grams a day I am relying on a lot of shakes. Having it there on paper really helps me see whats going on and ways I can improve in the future.

Also a big help I found on the internets about making protein shakes is to add a little water/milk to your glass then put the protein powder in mix it and then add the rest of your liquid... it really makes it easier to mix, especially with Casein protein.

I think the best whey protein on the market is One World Whey. It's from pastured-raised, grass-fed cows. They use cold-processing rather than heat. This means that it is non-denatured.

I consider Warrior Food to be the best vegan protein powder out there.

I like to alternate between the two.

For blending shakes at home, get yourself an immersion blender (like this one). Makes cleanup very easy. I use it every day. If I had to use an actual blender (too much work to clean up) or just used a spoon to mix (horrible mixing job), I would give up on shakes.

I've tried many protein shakes, and Met-Rx Protein Plus is the absolute best, by far, for me. Here are my reasons, in order of importance:

1. Taste. Awesome. I'm speaking of the vanilla. The consistency makes it nice for thick shakes, or you can even mix it in with a bit of cold coconut milk and have a quick dessert. Another underrated part I appreciate is it's '97% lactose free.' I'm mildly lactose intolerant, and a big downside for any protein regimen for me is either taste or the incredibly nasty gas I inevitably get. The taste and versatility of this shake is unparalleled.
2. Given reason 1 above, I'm extremely surprised at the nutritional information. 1g/1% DV fat? 2g/1% DV carbs? Only 1 g sugar?? How is this possible?
3. Cheap enough. I pick up 2 lbs in Trader Joe's for $25.

I'm dreading the day this gets discontinued. Because of the reasons above, I've been able to stick to this protein and made some good gains on this and this only… no creatine, no vitamins/supplements.

I mostly mix this with ice, light coconut milk and homemade almond milk, along with oatmeal for some carbs in the morning. Sometimes I'll sub the almond milk for coffee on a particularly harsh morning. I'll squeeze some in plain at night. I usually do just one scoop, not 2. Gonna have to try that pumpkin cheesecake shake recipe Ali posted, I think this protein will fit in very well with it.

When it comes to protein powder I try to keep it as clean as possible. The least ingredients the better, I use Nutrabio's Whey Protein Concentrate (unflavored)(check out the ingredients).I use this even when I want to gain weight, maybe it doesn't contain 1,000 calories but I can always add extra ingredients to my shake depending on how high my weight goal is.When I want to pack on weight I'll add milk, a banana, oatmeal, and peanut butter. If I want to drop weight i'll just mix it with water.

If you absolutely need something that tastes good and have the money to spend, I would go with Jay Robb's Whey Protein (Chocolate).

I add it to my diet. Trying to get 180 grams of protein everyday from food is a chore.

Giving gold standard whey isolate a try right now.

My everyday morning shake includes:
1 scoop of protein
8oz of almond or coconut milk (both unsweetened)
1 spoon of almond butter
1 banana
1 green apple
few cubes of ice

Tastes really good. Sometimes I add carrots or other fruits if I have some.

Post workout I have 1 scoop of protein mixed with 8oz of water.

Have they managed to devise a better milling process in recent years. The last time I had hemp protein powder was probably about 5 years ago and the texture was just vile. Like adding half a cup of sand to a milkshake and trying to drink it.

What do members think about weight gain type protein powders that are high in both protein and carbs? One I used to take had more than 50g protein and around 220 grams carbs (from waxy maize starch) and all manner of other stuff like creatine, glutamine etc. etc.. Gained weight, obviously, but was sure a lot was just fat.

@Cr33pin Plenty of protein filled foods out there, I also weigh 180 and have no issue eating that much. Example of a daily diet:
Breakfast
1 cup Steel Cut Oats (24g protein)
with 1/2 cup of Almonds (10g protein)
+Blueberries and raspberries

Snack
2 Slices of Ezekiel Bread (8g protein)
with 2tablespoons Peanut Butter (8g protein)

Lunch
~ 1/2lb Grilled Chicken (25g protein)
in 2 slices Ezekiel bread (8g protein)
with 1 Avocado spread on the bread

Snack
1 cup Greek Yogurt (17g protein)
with 1/2 cup Almonds (10g protein)
and raspberries or blueberries

Dinner
1lb grilled Steak (94g protein)
with Salad

Above is a pretty attainable 204g protein day.

@Bad Hussar I just throw my Hemp protein in with a smoothie. Usually a couple apples, blueberries, some kale, and some raspberries. Can barely taste it and you get the benefits of all the other nutrients you need post workout besides just protein!

I think my new protein powder is giving me headaches.. I just started at my new gym and have been drinking 2 shakes a day and have been getting mild headaches pretty much since a few days after starting the shakes. I used to take the All Natural Gold Standard I listed above. I can't find it here in Peru so I went with Gold Standard Hydro builder which contains Sucralose, which has been know to cause headaches and joint pains and all types of ill shit. Also my neck has been fucking killing em the last few days... possible side effect of the protein, maybe.

Anyone else have problems with Sucralose? Is it pretty much the same thing as Aspertame? I see them mentioned together a lot.
