Protein Shakes

Depends on your body type - some proteins ive found I react badly to (Reflex) others ive found I have responded positively to. in the end once I found what worked for me it came down to taste and budget. Dymatize Whey which was a WPI blend worked really well for me, ON 100% also great but more costly however better flavour IMO. if you're cutting or carb-sensitive then Syntrax Nectar is a great water-base which helps when you're carb depleting as it tastes good too AND no aspartame.

@Cr33pin Plenty of protein filled foods out there, I also weigh 180 and have no issue eating that much. Example of a daily diet:
Breakfast
1 cup Steel Cut Oats (24g protein)
with 1/2 cup of Almonds (10g protein)
+Blueberries and raspberries

Snack
2 Slices of Ezekiel Bread (8g protein)
with 2tablespoons Peanut Butter (8g protein)

Lunch
~ 1/2lb Grilled Chicken (25g protein)
in 2 slices Ezekiel bread (8g protein)
with 1 Avocado spread on the bread

Snack
1 cup Greek Yogurt (17g protein)
with 1/2 cup Almonds (10g protein)
and raspberries or blueberries

Dinner
1lb grilled Steak (94g protein)
with Salad

Above is a pretty attainable 204g protein day.

Theres some solid advice in there but 94 grams of your protein (which is a lot) is coming from a 1lb steak... I'm not in any kind of position to be eating a 1lb steak every night

Also I want the following on this page cause I am curious to hear about anyone else experience with it:
I think my new protein powder is giving me headaches.. I just started at my new gym and have been drinking 2 shakes a day and have been getting mild headaches pretty much since a few days after starting the shakes. I used to take the All Natural Gold Standard I listed above. I can't find it here in Peru so I went with Gold Standard Hydro builder which contains Sucralose, which has been know to cause headaches and joint pains and all types of ill shit. Also my neck has been fucking killing em the last few days... possible side effect of the protein, maybe.

Anyone else have problems with Sucralose? Is it pretty much the same thing as Aspertame? I see them mentioned together a lot.

Dude, if a protein shake is making you do that stop taking it. That can't be good for you.
If you can't buy what you used to use locally then buy online and have it shipped, that's the beauty of the internet.

My personal feeling with Protein brands is I use one that is used by professional sporting clubs. These clubs have the resources, incentive and duty of care to put serious research and thought into what they give their players so if they are using something then it must be good IMO.

I use a local brand here in Australia called Vital Strength which is used by a number of Aussie athletes and sports teams.

SO I didn't have a protein shake the other day and took that muscle relaxer at night and put a heat pad on my neck and I slept great and my neck was just a little stiff yesterday. I worked out yesterday since it was feeling better. I just did legs on machines, not squats so no real pressure on m neck) Around 8 o clock I decided to have a protein shake since I had a taxing work out and didn't eat a lot of protein that day..... Then around 12:30 when I went to lay down to go to sleep my neck was killing me again. Had to get up at 2am at take a muscle relaxer and put the heat pad on it.

It could be my neck would have been sore the day before when I tried to sleep but I took the muscle relaxer earlier in the evening.... It could be the protein shake, it could be I got a sissy neck.
I wouldn't have thought one scoop would cause a reaction. Before I was taking two scoops a day plus a scoop of amino acids that contained Sucralose.

Life is but mystery

I think it could be the Sucralose causing your pain man.

I just ripped through a couple tubs of PHD Mass Growth Factor weight gainer that I got mega cheap through a buddy with a hook up. I only got it cause I could get it cheap. This product contains Sucralose (Aspartame) as a sweetener and the whole time I was taking it I had kind of dull headache type pain towards the back of my head. When I bent down suddenly it felt like my brain was rattling around inside my skull. I also felt my sleep quality reduce, found myself waking up a lot more during the night and generally not feeling very healthy.

These tubs were 27 servings per tub, I was taking 2-3 per day as part of my overall calorie intake. I couldn't wait to finish them off by the end.

I've taken a ton of different proteins and weight gainers so I can't remember which ones did or didn't contain Sucralose, but I definitely noticed these adverse effects when using this PHD stuff. Then I saw you post this up and figured maybe thats my body reacting to that crap. Never can tell for sure I suppose.

Fortunately I did gain some quality mass using them so at least it weren't for nothing.

In the mean time I just picked up some unflavoured whey and am going to use more cocunut milk, nut butter, oats etctera to bulk up my shakes.

I'm 98.76% sure it is the Sucralose causing my pains. I have cut it back to a scoop a day which is not enough at all since I am going hard in the gym 6 days a week. In December my friend here is going back to the states and he can bring me back some of my 100% Natural Gold Standard Whey or Procomplex... which is great except for I don't know what I am going to do for November. I have not had any luck finding a protein here that doesn't have Aspartame or Sucralose in it. It is kind of scary thinking about how just starting to use that shit short term can make you feel....

You can build your own protein powder mix here and cut out the chemical sweeteners. True Nutrition will put Stevia in your powder instead of toxic Aspartame.

It costs the same as the designer brands, and a few bucks more then the hood stuff like Body Fortress.

Creepin, what gym are you training at? Is it in Miraflores?

Someone asked why the texture of hemp protein is so grainy and if there is anyway to avoid it. Its so grainy because of the insanely high levels of fiber it contains, but by weight, it isnt the greatest source of protein. I actually like the graininess in berry smooties and some other shit.

That said, I still use it every morning. Hemp protein, kefir (yogurt type product), fish oil, powdered greens/algae, and water. Mix and chug.

I signed up for 3 months, it was the minimum you could sign up for.

I am a fan of the scantily clad beaver, so once summer does hit I will have to check that place out for sure.

I usually take a few scoops (20g) of Horley's Ice 100% protein. (No carbs).
Mid-morning and within 30 mins of a workout. Great results, but remember it is much more beneficial to get protein from natural sources such as meat, nuts, dairy than relying on shakes.

protein is a waste of money. It was invented my wieder to sell a waste product and get rich off of. He used a bunch of roided out guys to advertise it. Same thing with gym culture. Go for a jog, do push ups, and pull ups, you will have a good physique. Being inside an artificial box where everyone is too busy caring about what others think of them is not the best way to pump up your test. The point at which you need insane weights to build mass is the point at which you are reaching body dysmorphia. I suggest you hit the gym real hard one last time, PR in that shit. I might have lost 10lbs since I stopped lifting heavy, but in my mind I still squat 315 for reps. All the mental confidence, without the assumed insecurity qualities that you associated with juiced out guys and Im not constantly eating chicken breast. Throw some heavy boulder around I find on my jogs. Feel the wind on my face. Sun on my back. Do some push ups feeling the bare ground on my hands. Sprint up a hill jumping over logs. Let my nuts bounce around in the fresh air. Go home take a cold shower. Can feel the test pumping through my veins all day.

While you make some valid points... it seems to me like you're pretty much knocking people who like going to the gym.

I mix 1 scoop of optimum 100% gold whey with water for my pre-workout. My post-workout is usually a meal such as chicken, rice and veggies.

I have no idea if the carbs are affecting me in a bad way. I was bordering on skinny fat earlier and now I'm seeing some good gains and lost the little bit of abdominal fat I had.

My question is should I cut down on the carbs or have a casein shake for my post-workout before I eat?

Is Tofu a good replacement to meat and chicken? I've noticed that they are increasingly using it on cooking shows.

Soy (Tofu is cured and shaped soy bean curds) isn't good for men in ammounts in soy protein over 25-35 grams. After that amount the body will start to metabolize it diffrently and estrogen compounds called phytoestrogens will be metoblized in that process. Nothing wrong with Tofu Evrey once in a blue moon (I eat it once a month just to switch it up), but avoid that shit if you can. Also almost all commercial protein bars use shitty soy protein as its protein source. Some cleans exsist like Quest but its another thing to keep in mind.

Soy is a garbage crop. Its only useful if its fermented and the phytoestrogens and other junk are leeched out.

Cooking shows like it because its fake healthy food, and its cheap.

Not knocking it, just trying to say 99% of fitness culture and products are not necessary if you are just going for a 300 warrior look. 300 push ups a day, 50 pull ups and some sprints. I use to be a gym rat, but I was young, broke, living in the suburbs, and it was a place to go meet up with a buddy shoot the shit, see some other people, get the work out in, now I can maintain a similar body and not have to drive and pay for some establishment.

Protein is a waste of money. Whey is a by-product from milk created during the cheese making process which is dehydrated, packaged as a protein supplement, and sold to you for 10 times the cost just so you can go pee it into the toilet because you're body doesn't need it

I use sun warrior protein powder not because it's vegan or any of that crap but because it's the only one that doesn't make me feel bloated after drinking it.

Be warned this protein tastes like you fell face first on dirt
