I work out 5 days Monday thru Sunday. I am a landlord with a day job and my evenings get interrupted all the time with calls, repairs, etc. So I don't have a schedule set in stone. Normally though, I take Saturdays off because I am too busy with projects around the apartment to work out... or I take the wife out somewhere. the remaining day of the week is a day I am too tired from work to work out.

When I first started out three years ago, I could barely do 15 minutes on the bike at a low setting. Thought I was going to drop dead at times in the middle of the ride. 18 months ago I couldn't do a single military style pushup.


Sounds like you have a pretty decent system worked out, and especially good that you have a way to monitor your progress, and since you have been doing this 18months and seem to be doubling down (hahahahahaha.. maybe not quite double?), it will be interesting to know if you will still be able to maintain about 5 days per week 18 months from now.

To each our own, but after reading about some of your goals earlier, I don't think that 5 days is necessary - and probably 3-4 days per week would be sufficient and more sustainable... .and then I already said that I kind of disagree with the concept of burning or measuring calories in that regard, even though a lot of folks like to use those kinds of calorie frameworks as a kind of measure (I just think that it is an almost meaningless and nonsensical kind of measure - and there is no real need for me to attempt to go on and on about that particular point).

I am not sure either, but so far so good. I never have been able to maintain this level of lifting in my adult life until the diet change and the supplements. I am putting on a lot of muscle. example: I wear a shoulder support for my left arm as I have a bit of tennis elbow (it helps a lot). Now it is too damn tight around my triceps. Did my Sunday weigh in and I am down another 1.5 lbs this week, which is my target rate. My actual fat loss might be more, but until I have the followup DEXA scan, I don't know exactly how much lean mass I have added. I am not starving at all and have plenty of energy during the day.

I won't be counting calories after I hit my target weight (to be determined after one or two more DEXA scans). After that I will just be eating normally. I will add some carbs back, but will watch my fat mass closely, and adjust the carb intake to make sure I don't go back to my old body. In the meantime, I am going to maintain the 800+ kcal a day deficit.

Regarding cause and effect, it is likely that there is a bit of snowballing going on.. and your better diet causes increased energy and also your expending of energy could also have some effect on increasing energy. Having extra muscle is a kind of a problem similar to having extra money. [Image: wink.gif]

I am sure you have come across the concept called carb creep, which is frequently discussed in the low carb eating circles in which sometimes folks will overdo the carbs, once they start adding them back in. One thing is that carbs are addictive, but sometimes folks begin to discount the negative effect of the carbs and then they will return to their previous weight issues. It seems a bit less likely that you would experience the carb creep problem if you continue to monitor and remain prepared to cut back somewhat on the carbs if you are responding negatively to their reintroduction.

Keto is sustainable for long periods provided you eat and drink much salt. I recommend heated and congealed animal blood and bone broth on a daily basis.

Granted, you will likely avoid pure ketosis through gluconeogenesis at times. Blood also has glucose oftentimes.

All other posts conflicting with information herein are false. Many speculate. I experiment.

Lyle McDonald was saying something like 2000 mg over RDA. So that's like 5-7,000 . 1 tsp of salt is about 5 grams. I definitely salt my food, but when I start to lose focus and can't concentrate - a tsp in a 8 oz cup of warm water gets me back on track.

The funny thing about keto is that the amount of daily water intake is supposed to increase - but if you increase water you deplete your electrolytes.

I'm 4 days deep into this, I felt a bit shaky on the first day due to the shock of going low carb but I am gradually feeling a bit better.

I was previously on a very high carb diet, eating more than 300g on most days, frequently crossing into 400g+. I love rice, pasta, sweet potatoes etc. I would also have various sweet treats sprinkled in through my days. I have to admit I've often overeaten out of boredom.

I've eaten the same thing mostly since starting, typically:

Meal 1:
Coconut oil for frying
5 eggs
100-150ml double cream (heavy cream in the US)
50g grated cheddar cheese
Spinach based salad (Prepackaged, supermarket bought)

Meal 2:
227g/8oz ribeye pan fried in salted butter
Broccoli

Snacks:
50g nuts, either brazil or almonds
Sugar free jelly (jello in the US)

The first change I will be making is removing the double cream, it means I can fit another small meal in there as it is 467-700 calories depending on how much I use.

How long did it take you to become fat adapted?

1) Why do you want to remove the double cream? Is it sweetened?

2) I know Jelly is probably small portions, but why sugar free jelly? what is the sweetener in there? There's other ways to get some sweetness, no, if feel that you need a little bit of that?

3) If your prior diet was as bad as you say, I doubt that you have to go full bore keto in order to experience considerable positive effects, and in that regard, I doubt that you have to become fat adapted in order to experience lot's of positive effects.. you just need variety in your diet to keep yourself interested and satiated.

Takes a few weeks to a month for the first time. Keto adaption=your body producing adequate amounts of fat metabolism enzymes, mainly in the b-oxidation pathway.

It's really simple. If you want to lose weight go under your BMR for calories, if you want to gain, go over. For the first few days I would track your calories and make sure you match your carb-heavy diet calories. Be aware that high fat foods are often calorically dense (9cal/g vs 4cal/g with protein & carb). Therefore, your volume of food eaten to hit your daily calories will be less. It's easy to overshoot calories initially due to this volume misconception. If the cream fits in nicely, no need to remove it.

WIA: I'm sure there's lurking MD's that can explain this better but this is the causality behind the water/salt issue. On ketogenic diet --> eat high food, low carb --> low blood sugar --> minimal/no insulin produced --> insulin not only takes sugar into cells but also has a secondary role in having your kidneys hold onto salts (sodium, potassium, magnesium) --> no insulin = salts start getting excreted --> salts draw out water when excreted to maintain osmotic pressure and isotonicity (urine can get very concentrated but typically when you lose salt you lose water) --> your body needs more salt due to shedding effect of insulin/your body needs more water due to dehydration caused by salt loss

2) The jelly is in small pots, it is sweetened with aspartame and acesulphame k. It is only 5 calories and 1.3g of carbohydrates which is why it is so appealing.

3) My main motivation for going keto is that I don't feel that I have any control on a regular diet, I feel at the mercy of sugar crashes and the hunger that they cause. I did a lot of reading on keto and it seems to be the best way for me to break free of this and lose weight.

I definitely intend to stick with it for at least 2 months to judge the effects of the diet. I've been tracking my food intake for a few months now, so I have a handle on how much I should be eating. I aim to cut at 500 calories under TDEE which puts me at 2100 calories per day.

I currently don't exercise but I aim to start cycling and doing bodyweight exercises.

My understanding is that you are talking about a milk product. You get some sugar effect from the lactose in the milk; however, the fat offsets the sugar effect.

In sum, this product is probably good for you to fill you up and give you nutrition from the fat, and the only reason to cut back would be if you are getting too much of a sugar effect from the quantity of lactose.

I would not get caught up in the number of calories - especially from fat, the only calories that really matter are those that you get from carbs, too much protein and if you are eating the wrong kinds of fats (such as any kinds of hydrogenated oils or partially hydrogenated oils)

I see from you profile that you are from the UK, and I thought that various parts of Europe and the EU, Aspertame was illegal or at least severely restricted.

The only point that I am trying to make is one regarding a kind of sustainability, because you asserted that you want to go from eating the junky way that you were to going into ketosis, and I don't think that you have to go that far or that fast in order to get benefits by mostly cutting the crap out of your diet and adding more fat.

There are variations of keto, and think about the high fat, low carb variations, and in that regard, move towards eating more natural foods.. just eating high fat is going to help to satiate you but moving away from various sweeteners may take a bit of a time to get rid of the sugar cravings, and that is mostly by cutting out sweets, whether they are actual sweets or the artificial substitutes which also cause you to continue to crave sweets.

I find a good sweet to be frozen chocolate mixed with frozen coconut oil, or high fat cheese, or bacon (whether cold or warm)

Diet is more important than exercise in terms of fixing your cravings and your overall health.. of course, exercise is good for stamina, endurance, tone and muscle building -- but maybe not so much about losing weight (except perhaps indirectly)

One word of warning, watch the alcohol.

On Wednesday I took my wife out to the local bar. We were both mentally exhausted from work, so I cheated on my diet and had a few drinks.

Middle of the night I woke up completely dehydrated and suffering from low electrolytes. I didn't have that much to drink and drank a lot of water before bed, but I felt like hell. Ended up cheating some more by having a Gatoraid to recharge the electrolytes.. Felt like crap the next day and I was hungry (probably result of the insulin spike).

Back to normal now... but it looks like I am going to be completely 'dry' while on this diet.. no exceptions.

Suggestion - get a cookbook or look up recipies on the net when you get bored of the same food. That happened after a week of eggs, eggs, and more eggs for me.

I'm at about 3 weeks now and have lost 12 lbs from 255 to 243. My workouts are way better (long runs/long bike rides now, I lift over the winter). Slightly lower energy, but endurance is no longer as strongly connected to lack of hunger levels.

Agreed, a single beer is more than my entire carb allocation for the day. I switched to red wine, 5g per glass.

For sugarfree electrolytes, get the low-sodium salt (1/2 or more potassium chloride) and add it to whatever sugarfree drink you like; it's not too bad even in tea, and you can hide the salt flavor if it is in a sugarfree drink powder mix or you can just add more artificial sweetener.

I think that there are a lot of dietary changes that could have short term positive results, even if they are not really long term sustainable, so in that regard, the longer the better in terms of trying to find a pattern of eating or a set of foods that work overall to satiate hunger while at the same time allowing for good health markers, whether those markers be weight loss or good energy or good blood work. A lot of us can likely move our diets more and more towards keto - but then the question is also regarding what version of keto are we following? more good fats, less bad fats, less carbs and fewer sugars, more natural foods and fewer boxed foods? Adequate protein is important too, but not to go overboard.

Also, regarding weight loss, if that is one of the goals, it is not always the greatest measure, because even in following really good dietary changes and then sticking with it, there may be initial weight loss and then stagnation and maybe even continued stagnation with weight loss - and it could take several months for the body to adjust and then to experience additional weight loss.

I nearly completely avoid artificial sweeteners, except maybe to the extent that someone might slip such a thing into something that I drink. When I am socializing, I try not to be a prude about what I am eating or drinking, but if I am not sure about what is in it, I may just drink it in very small moderation or just ask, "oh what is this drink that you are giving me?" Most of the time, even at a party, there will be options, and you can just say, oh i prefer just water rather than something that may be sweetened with some unknown stuff.

Regarding salt, it has already been mentioned in here about broth, and there are a variety of ways to get broth without even following traditional preparation methods. For example, I buy a bunch of fatty beef ribs with the bone, and I eat them. Afterwards, I have the bones, so I boil them in a pot and then use the juices, which is a kind of broth. I think that you can get more broth out of them if you heat them in the oven first.

Another decent salt option is Himalayan pink salt... or some other unprocessed salts.. even regular table salt can be o.k. in order to ensure to get some of the iodine in your diet... I used to buy Himalayan pink salt on the internet (maybe it was through amazon) for like $20 a pound or something like that. About four months ago, I was shopping in Costco, and I saw that they were selling 5 pounds of Himalayan pink salt for $10, and I said to myself.. what the fuck?.. and of course, I bought it.. that will probably last me a couple of years.. even if I give some away.. hahahahaha.

The point of the Himalayan pink salt is that it is a form of unprocessed salt that has minerals preserved from the non-processing.

I bought some sugar free sport drink powder off of Amazon. It should arrive tomorrow. If I do outdoor work in the heat, I need a sports drink in addition to water. I think my heat tolerance came from the Lap side of the family.. so basically I have none. I drown in sweat when I exercise. Normally happy in cool weather though.

I just want to avoid the sugar. Plus I need something mix the BCAA and Creatine power with to make it more palatable to take.

I bought some sugar free sport drink powder off of Amazon. It should arrive tomorrow. If I do outdoor work in the heat, I need a sports drink in addition to water. I just want to avoid the sugar. Plus I need something mix the BCAA and Creatine power with to make it more palatable to take.

Besides broth, it seems that Coconut water can be good for this kind of electrolyte replacement too, and you can also make some of your own juices with blending and adding water and salt.

Keto diet experiences?

Something happened that may or may not be related to going through Keto. My tennis elbow (I got it from typing.. not tennis) in my left arm disappeared. I have had it for almost two years, requiring an elbow brace during workouts. This week I ditched it. The inflammation and pain is about 95% gone

Eating a low carb diet reduces systemic inflammation. Could be that a lot of your elbow issues were being aggravated by your diet and weren't actually there in the first place.

I had a similar experience when quitting drinking which caused my ongoing back issues to completely disappear.

I drink very little now, so maybe that also has something to do with it. Either way I am happy that I not longer have that twinge of pain in my elbow when I extend my arm.

Keto diet experiences?

On a side note:

I have a Facebook friend who is a hard core vegetarian lefty. Nice woman, just not much in the way of critical thinking. I get tagged constantly on scare items relating to climate change, sea level rise, the dangers of eating meat, the health of veganism, how Fukashima is turning the oceans into seas of mutant fish, etc...

Many of these scare claims are pretty easy to take apart using facts and reason.

Recently, I noticed a major uptick in the volume of stuff in regards to the "evils" of eating meat and dairy. Before going on this diet, I never really paid much attention to what the hardcore veg / vegan groups put out on the web as "science". According to the vegan science, I should be morbidly obese, complete with clogged arteries, suffering all sorts of inflammatory disorders... basically I should have one foot in the grave by now.

Instead I am down 20 lbs with a visible gain in lean body mass. My sperm count (wife and I are going the IVF route) went up 250%, and I get stay in calorie deficit without getting foggy brained or feeling weak. I am planning to get my blood work done late this month or early next month, so I will see what my blood sugar, HDL, LDL, and triglycerides are.

Keto diet experiences?

I'm a big fan the Keto lifestyle. I lost over 60lbs a few years back. Unfortunately, I gained it all back plus some after I quit drinking and smoking and started eating more. I've been back on it for the past 4 months. This time I'm hoping its for good. The human body is simply not designed to consume the amount of sugar that's in an average American's diet.
Following a bunch of Keto'ers on Instagram helps keep me motivated and getting creative with different dishes.

When you were on Keto the first time, how long did it take you to lose 60 lbs?

You know sometimes as we age, we cannot achieve the same levels of progress as we experienced when we were younger, so for example, we become a lot more insulin resistant, meaning that we are a lot more sensitive to sugar and putting on weight (and along the same lines difficulties in shedding the weight that we do put on). Have you seen any progress in the past 4 months, whether your goal is losing weight or feeling better or a combination of both?
