Do you shower at the gym?
02-06-2015, 08:50 AM
Every since I have been going to the gym, I have used the showers after I have completed my workout. But I have always wondered why some guys just seems to packs their things and go home? I mean, when I am done lifting, I am a sweaty mess, and in a heavy need of a shower.
When I was at elementary school, I use to hate the obligatory showers after the gym class, but now showering is as much part of my gym routine, as racking my weights is part of my exercise. I am not the biggest dude in the gym, and that in more than one way. I am sure we all have seen the "horse" of the gym talking to his friend, standing with one foot on the locker room bench with his towel around the neck, while his buddy is getting more and more dressed.
Anyway, I think taking a shower is a great way to boost your motivation when you see how you stack up against other local guys, while simultaneously making you more confident in your own skin while being around other men (no homo).

...I think if you asked this question in person there'd be some serious ball busting on the way. The "horse" of the gym?? What the hell dude.
That being said, I shower at my gym without checking out other guys.

The older I get, the more I resemble the old guys at the gym. Noisily punch one in the stall, walk naked to the shower, then stretch my hammies on the bench while I dry off and talk about boxing.
Makes the younger kids run for the door with sweaty bags, and that suits me fine.

Never, considering the gym is a thirty second walk away from my place. I do notice a lot of guys who come in the gym, sit their ass on the bicycle for half an hour, then head into the locker room.
Those guys seem to take the longest showers. Probably on the DL, or they forgot to pay their water bill.

No, no, and FUCK NO.
Bunch of dirty mother fuckers out in the world. I don't even like using public shitters.
Lately I've been sanitizing equipment before I use it, after realizing that plenty of people don't even bother to wash their hands at my gym.
Also, if you need to look at naked men to boost your confidence, you may want to find a different kind of forum that caters to that sort of thing.

Other than the fact that I live a 5 minute drive from the gym and usually struggle to walk or do anything after a workout, we sweat for quite some time after an intense workout.
I'd rather wait till I'm home, have consumed some nutrients and have stopped sweating before showering.

The only time I have ever picked up skin rashes/infections has been after going to a public gym.

Yeah, there's lots of health risks I think.

You are massively overthinking this.

Hmm, I guess different gyms have different levels of hygiene. I wouldn't want to take a shower where I might become more filthy than clean.

I do most workouts. One point it was out of necessity as I was between places and it was my only shower access. But I second that you have to be careful. My gym has slowly gotten worse so I don't shower as much but you have to make sure its clean. I have gotten athletes foot from my gym before because of the showers.

After 9 years in the military, and 14 months as a military contractor I refuse to use public showers. I've come to despise damp places full of naked dudes. And there's always some asshole that wants to have a conversation bare ass naked with a towel draped over their shoulder. Nothing better than washing your ass in your own shower.

Fuck no.
Athletes foot, jock itch, toenail fungus, ringworm, MRSA and other shit is crawling around in warm damp showers. Plus weirdos, homos and old men who use the locker room as their nudist colony.

It depends on how clean the gym is. All gyms have different conditions. If it's really cold outside however, it's best to at least have extra clothes so that you're not wearing a soaked shirt in freezing temps (Avoiding a head cold).
As for me I do as of now but that's because I like the condition of my gym(s). But not always in other ones.

When I went up to NYC for a week long trip, I signed up for a free 3 day pass. I signed up strictly for the purpose of showering as I was sleeping at the Port Authority train station lol.
This particular gym had a website where you give them your name/e-mail to receive the pass, then you print it out and bring it into the Gym.
The Gym was in a huge 25 story building, first floor was retail stores, 2nd floor was restaurants/cafes. I think the Gym was on the 9th floor.
This gym was very clean (memberships start @75.00 so it automatically filters out the lower class people), there were about 6 shower stalls, and they had actual doors. The stalls were probably about 6'x6'. There were Soap and Shampoo dispensers on the Wall, seemed to be some high end stuff, I didn't recognize what it was, but they were lime green.
The cool thing is, they didn't actually begin 'timing' my pass until the 3rd time I had checked in. I got there on a Thursday and Monday morning was my 3rd visit, so I got a few more days out of it than I was expecting. I was going to do the same thing at a nearby gym, but it was about 3 miles away so I'm glad I didn't have to. Now that I think of it, the last day I came in I got there at 6:00 right as they were opening up and no one was even @ the front desk lol.
Since the place was so damn clean I wasn't worried about athletes foot/other contagious stuff people have named, but if I was, they had some alcohol based mouthwash at the sinks. You could put it into a cup and dump on the shower floor.

The main benefit I've noticed is that it keeps the momentum of the day going. If you go home to shower, there are too many things that can trigger a distraction or cause a time sink.

I live less than a minute drive from my gym so no. I don't really like the idea of sporting shower flip flops in order to avoid foot fungus. Also, I dont really want people peeking at my junk.
