Diamantina, Brazil

[LONG POST]

During the month of january I spent 8 days in Diamantina, 300km north of Belo Horizonte. Here is my datasheet on what I consider a great town to hunt brazilian 7s and 8s:

Diamantina, Brazil
City overview
Diamantina is one of the most important cities north of Belo Horizonte, on the state of Minas Gerais. Despite its size (<50.000 inhabitants) it is an important location due to its historic value (the city dates back to the 18th century and gave birth to important characters in brazilian history), touristic value (surrounded by waterfalls, parks, mountains) and for its university, Universidade Federal dos Vales do Jequitinhonha e Mucuri (UFVJM), which counts more than 4.000 students in 24 majors.

Currency: BRL
Prices:
Night at hostel: R$40
Night at pousada (inn - most common type of accomodation): R$50-200
Meal (rice, beans, fries, meat, salad): R$6-14
Beer at a bar: <R$6,00 (600ml bottle)
Beer at nightclub: 3 cans for R$10
Shot of cachaça (local distilled spirit): R$1-4
Nightclub cover charge: R$10-60

Language
Diamantina is not a place you want to visit unless you have good portuguese conversational skills, or at the very least advanced spanish. I estimate maybe 20% of people can speak some english, but only 5% - generous guess - can hold a conversation. The people are very loving and patient, and they will attempt to help nevertheless. Still, if you can't speak portuguese, this will interfere badly with pickup.

Where to stay
The city is quite small and you should aim to stay in the city center or near Armazém do Rosário (see below), the best nightclub in Diama. Your best option is staying at an inn/b&b. Searching online, you will find dozens of options, like Ouro de Minas, Vila do Imperador, Seresta, and many more. If you decide you want to pay less, and stay further away, beware: the city is built on very irregular grounds and you will be walking up and down the whole day long. Taxis are numerous, though, and even moreso on their 2 wheeled versions, mototaxis, which are cheap and popular.

When to go
When in Diama, the aim will be mainly local students. Therefore, december, january and july (vacation periods) are not good months.

In February things start to pick up again and swiftly reach their highest point in the biggest event in the city: Diamantina's Carnaval. During the holiday, tens of thousands of people gather in the city and its surroundings to party on the streets for 5 days nonstop. It's a 24h party throughout the city, every b&b is sold out as well as the most popular lodging option during Carnaval: the repúblicas (fraternities/sororities). These student houses are very traditional and some have decades of history. They host the party goers for relatively cheap prices, include 24h open bar and throw exclusive parties. The degree of comfort may vary from nice to precarious. So if you want to spend your Carnaval here, you better plan ahead. It is drunken mess, a crowded nightmare, and a great opportunity to bang many girls and have an awesome time.

Another famous event that takes place in Diama is the Vesperata, a night when musicians play classical music for free from the top of the balconies in one of the city's streets. I've been told it's beautiful. The Vesperatas take place from april to october. For more info, check the calendar.

Sightseeing
I realize the focus of many of the players here is not sightseeing, but Diama's surrondings are beautiful. The town is located in a dry, mountainous region, surrounded by waterfalls and parks. The vilage/park of Biri-biri was my favorite. If you like hiking and mountaneering, you will also have many options.

Gaming girls in Diamantina
I'm a good talker, so I like day gaming and night game only where I can talk to girls. Dancing and caveman game are not my forte, although they work great in Brazil.

In Diamantina I faced a problem: I couldn't find hot girls during the day. I would see a handful running tasks or going to classes, but they were too few and spread out. My only resort was night game. In the map below, you will see the very best spots in the city (and the only ones you will need to visit):

1) Cathedral
Minas is a conservative state where god and family values are important. Many families go together to sunday mass, and the talent is incredible. This is also a good area to scout for girls starting their nights. The cathedral is located on a big square which serves as a meeting point, and it's also where many people park their cars to go to Baiuca (see below), so you will constantly be seeing groups of them walking by.

2) Mercado Municipal
The marketplace hosts a variety fair with food, alcohol, music and miscellaneous souvenirs on friday nights and saturday mornings. Families and tourists attend to this spot, but on friday nights it's a good option to look around and open girls by asking info on the market's historic building or where to go later on. Grab a beer and sit on the sidewalk or square benches close by.

3) A Baiuca and other bars (click for picture)
Nice sit down bar. Pick a table on the street. Logistics here are not optimal because people come in groups to pregame or chill and it can be hard to infiltrate. Still, good food, good price on beer.

4) Berola Bar
Similar to Baiuca, but much smaller. Come here only as a plan B in case Baiuca is closed or too crowded.

5) Armazém do Rosário aka POOSY PARADISE
This is THE spot in Diamantina. If it weren't for Armazém, I would probably not be writing this datasheet. When I was there, the amount of talent per square meter reminded me of my time in Osijek, Croatia. Everywhere you look hot girls dressed up. Easy to talk to. Sweet. Loving.

The place is a big house and garden with many rooms. Armazém offers a wide range of events. Thursday is Ladies Night, with funk carioca. Friday and Sat are usually more commercial, club oriented music and hip-hop. Sundays live samba. They also host fraternity/sorority parties, depending on the time of the year.

Also, cover charges here change during the night. As soon as they open up the cover is like R$10. As it fills up, prices go up, reaching R$50-80. Don't get here late.

Guys
Mostly nice guy betas. Few guys pose a threat, physically or gamewise. Biggest issue is they cockclock you because they know the girl your macking on.

Girls
From milky white to mulato, brown to black hair. Few fatties, but a considerable number could lose a few pounds (excessive alcohol and bad eating from leaving mom and dad's home). Most of them look good, though, and they are very loving and cute, have long natural hair, nice eyes and smiles. They'll cook for you and fuck your brains out.

My experience
I went to Diamantina for business. I was lucky that this year, exceptionally, all students were still in the city in january, finishing up their 2013 studies due to a University strike last semester.

To make a long story short, I barely went out and only a 2 or 3 nights went to bars, where the majority of girls had boyfriends. Mercado on friday was good, but I was there with coworkers and had to keep face. I did notice, though, that wherever I went girls stared at me. Upon seeing me pass by, they would look at me shamelessly, hint their friends, giggle. I felt good. At the same time, I couldn't approach.

After a frustrated attempt of visiting Armazém on saturday (got there late and the cover was R$60), I went there again the next day. This time, I was by myself and I knew it would be my only shot to get my local girl.

I got to the party at 20h, just as the samba band was starting their act. The very first girl I saw was gorgeous: short blue dress, no bra, dark hair, tanned skin, big mouth. She was with a tall, chubby blonde. They stared at me up up and down and were called outside by someone. I entered the venue feeling like a boss. The ratio of the club was 60F/40M, and the girls looked GOOD.

On my way to the stage, every single group of girls (and there were many groups) eye fucked the hell out of me. I positioned myself in the middle of the crowd and I swear two or three groups of chicks immediately flocked to where I was standing. The girls would bump into me, stare, etc. Guys, meanwhile, held their beers close their chest and stayed on the sides of the dancefloor.

With my previous experience in small towns, I knew that although I had the attention I couldn't fuck up. All eyes were on me, and most of the girls knew each other, so if I striked out with one of them, I would get burned with others. I had to focus on just one, and don't fuck up.

After 5min the girl in the blue dress came in the dancefloor and stood next to me. She was with 4 or 5 girlfriends and 1 guy. There were many options around, but I decided I was going to try getting this girl, regardless of getting burned with the others. I tried waiting for a bit to see if the chubby blonde would leave, worried she would cockblock me. She didn't. I slowly came closer to the girl with the blue dress, grabbed her elbow and asked where her boyfriend was. She smiled. The chubby blonde said outloud "I'll be right back!" and winked. I was surprised. Thank you, chubby blonde!

I talked to the blue dress brunette for a few minutes and tried to kiss her. She turned her face. Stupid, I should've remembered what I wrote on the Osijek datasheet: in a small town, don't fuck with her reputation. I continued talking, she introduced me to all of her friends and at the end of the night we went together to her sorority. I was drunk, and so was she. There, everyone smoked a few joints and one by one went to bed. After 1h of "don't fuck up and sleep" game, she heated me some leftovers (gotta love that nurturing instinct), we made out in the kitchen and went to her bedroom to bang.

I slept over and she drove me to my place in the morning. I texted her the next 2 days before I left, but she flaked. Oh well. It was worth it anyway, the girl was close to my ideal physically, and the hottest girl I've banged so far.

Conclusion
Diamantina is beautiful and relatively cheap. It is off the beaten track and full of students. People are very nice and loving. They know you are not from here, and specially if you are a stylish guy, you will gather A LOT of attention. The village mentality is strong, everyone knows each other. But since the thousands of girls who study at the uni here live away from their parents, in sororities, they dont give a fuck.

Diamantina is worth a visit, 7.5/10 would come back.

Nice write up! Can you comment on safety in this town? When you talk about Brazil - safety is always a huge issue!

Bigger issue in a tier 3 city like this would be language barrier.

Nice data sheet! Where are you from Ringo? Your profile says your home country is Brazil but I'm assuming you are from somewhere else and look very different than the locals no?

Great datasheet.

You wrote about how all the girls were looking at you in the club and so on. Was it how you dressed, your ethnicity being rare, or something else?

Also you wrote about the possible language barrier. Do you think that if a person had a choice, would it be better to have very basic Portuguese, or slightly above basic Spanish?

@OP... a well-deserved +1 from me. Great data sheet on a place well off the beaten path, even for most Brazilians. I suspect a lot of the good things I hear about Mineiras is true. Looking forward to finding out for myself.

Nice data sheet.

I went to Carnaval in Diamantina a few years ago. It was pretty wild. It is known as being a pegação, a place where people go just to hook up. You'll be hard pressed to find someone over 25 in that city during Carnaval. The ratio on the streets wasn't that great, it seemed like a huge sausage fest. If you're looking for a wild party with young kids in an interesting colonial town then go to Diamantina.

Thanks. The city felt absolutely safe, as long as you stayed 4km or so from the city center. Beyond that, it gets sketchy.

No, not really, I would rate myself as a 7.

1) They will look anyway, they know you are not from there. They can smell it.
2) If you don't look like a frat bro, local thug or harmless beta (pics above), you will stand out a lot. Guys there have zero style. Some of them actually make some effort, but they just buy brand shit and go out with their neon color designer polo shirts, it's laughable. Who am I to judge, anyway, it's their reality and works for them.

True.

Thanks. I'm Brazilian, born and raised in São Paulo. Like I said above, I look decent and dressed better (as in with more style, not with expensive or preppy clothes), that's why I got attention. If I had a bad haircut and walked around with baggy cargo pants, tank top and flip flops, I would look like another student.

Thank you. Portuguese is my mother language.

I think you will have a great time in BH, I hope I can go back soon and explore the city properly. When I was there, just before hitting Diamantina, I took a stroll wearing a pink fitted tee and holding an umbrella. Guys looked at me weird, and one called me a faggot. Five minutes after that, a cute girl driving with her friends yelled at me from her car "Oh my god, I wish I could be that umbrella. Take me with you, take me!". Haha I love BH.

As for the towns around it, I visited Ouro Preto for 4 or 5 days and absolutely loved it, maybe I should do a small write up just to place it on the map, there is not much info here.

Thanks for the write up on smaller towns around the bigger cities. (Teir 3)

I'm in the process of learning Portuguese through pimsluer. Actually not bad right now but if a native speaker started speaking fast (their normal speed) I would probably get lost. Any tips on improving this aspect? Or just practice makes perfect.

Carnival in Minas Gerais is usually like that, a big clusterfuck. More guys than girls, girls generally on the uglier side, and the crowd will be mostly comprised of university kids. Wouldn't advise the gringos here to hit MG during Carnival, but during other times of the year it should be ok.

My cousin lives in BH and heads over to Diamantina once a year. The stories he tells me makes me want to head there, very badly..

If this is an option for you and you've been interested in Diamantina, pack up and go!

Sort of. I mean, it's always a clusterfuck. But you can get better ratios and a non-university crowd elsewhere. Places like Rio, Salvador and Florianopolis come to mind. These options are (much) more expensive than MG though, which makes sense - MG caters to the younger, university crowd because it's cheap.

Thanks. Like I said above, I wouldn't say I'm very much above average. I have been told many times that I look like John Mayer (I'm in my early 20's):

Thanks. Girls from Minas are absolutely worth it: feminine, cute, nurturing, loving. It's hard to describe, but it's not something I see much stuck here in SP.

Right. There's different types of street parades (blocos), though, which gather different crowds. São Paulo, for example, has street parades in Vila Madalena where the crowd is older (24-30).

Being a crowded, drunken mess and a logistical clusterfuck is part of the holiday's essence though haha.
