Sofia, Bulgaria

Datasheet

Sofia has one unique feature - Vitosha mountain for hiking/skiing , Boyana/Dragalevtsi hiking/waterfalls
You will meet many foreigners there.
Hostels where you can game foreign girls:
Moreto Cafeto
Hostel Mostel
Art Hostel
They are all 5/10 mins away from the city center.

Bars/disco
Go to Morgan's on the central street. It is a nice cosy place for pulling. Drink only beer, the alcohol is fake.
Terminal 2 has a good club scene - you can game girls in the smoking room where it is quiet
Try also Mixtape club or Maze.
They are smaller and you can pull quickly.
Bedroom is another club which is a bit pricey and you can find some gold-diggers there.
Gotham and Caroussel are kinda the same as Bedroom. You will spot many gold-diggers if that is your thing.
Karaoke Versus - it is a chill place where groups of girls go to party.
Bar the Muse attracts some foreigners and local girls every Thursday night.
Studentski grad is where if you get a table and splash some cash for bottle service you will attract poor student girls' attention
Discos in Studentski grad : Plaza-shitty music but a lot of talent,Jim Beam cool music
Bar Club 35 is perfect for dating.
There are plenty of girls in Studentski grad everywhere, seriously if you cannot score there, you probably will not score anywhere.
Go to a salsa class in Pambos center or salsa con Miguel. Plenty of talent there eager for action.
Stix/BSD 2 are nice billiard clubs where you can take a girl out.

I do not honestly know a foreigner that did not do well in Sofia, all women want to immigrate and see a foreigner as a one-way ticket out of the country. It is dirt cheap too.

Just my two cents - Go in the summer and visit Plovdiv, Sunny beach and Sozopol. Sofia is a worker's city.

I never heard anyone describe Bulgaria as easy, not local girls at least

Why would Bulgarian girls need foreigners to leave the country?, they can work anywhere in EU, and the price of a one way flight is a few Euros

Chalga bars - Plaza, Biad, every other bar in Studentski grad
Petak is okay but I will recommend Park bar which is a bit higher class and you can speak to each other , the music is not loud.
At Moreto Kafeto hostel for example there are ukrainian owner girl and usually russian/ukrainian girls and other foreign staff. Some Bulgarian girls gravitate there too. Every Friday they locals and backpackers get together there.
At Arts hostel , they often have Bulgarian and foreign girls on some of the gatherings.
As for Wizz and Ryanair , it is a valid point however remember renting a place/finding a job especially for those girls is not as easy as it sounds, especially solo.
Every 1 out of 5 women in Bulgaria are married to foreigners.
Believe the stats if you think my judgement is off.
And finally go in summer in the beach resorts Sunny Beach/Nessebar go bar crawling. It is a miss and hit.

Sofia is easily the worst capital city in Europe, for me(second place Bratislava) the place for me has zero redeeming features. I did not have much love for the locals, everyone was trying to rip me off. Somewhere I have no plans to return to.

Plovdiv was nicer, until I was poisoned in a restaurant at least

I'm thinking I may be in Sofia in about a month, roughly, for at least a few days. In summer, I'm thinking about Varna, sounds like it's worth checking out.

Worst capital city, hmmm, what about Pristina or Tirana? They're not in the EU and definitely poorer. And then there's Moldova's capital? I forget the name but it's supposedly pretty dull and shitty.

Was sofia cheap? I imagine it's probably the cheapest EU capitol by a good amount? Surely the mountains near it, and a lack of tourists, are a redeeming grace?

I have been myself to these hostel bars, and the problem is you simply wont find quality women there. Same thing for english language meetups. Or bar crawls. And this is true for pretty much every non-western country.

OK if you are just trying to rack up numbers, good. But starting by your mid-twenties you should be making the switch to quality vs quantity.

EDIT: I see you are BG native hence your attraction to foreigners, seems logic

I'd second Park Bar as a nice spot.

There's another place next to it, too, that's pretty good. Has outdoor seating plus some very small indoor dance floor. Can't recall the name, or find it on a map.

There's another place too - used to be an outdoor toilet, now it's a massive bar in the middle of the park. Can't seem to find that either.

I'm useless.

I said worst for me, naturally I haven't been to all capital cities. Kosovo is Serbia, I have no idea about Tirana, never been and no desire. Although Tirana and Pristina are probably good places to buy a new kidney, just hope they don't sell you back the one they took from you

It's about the same price as Belgrade. Maybe a bit cheaper. Not enough to really notice it.

Those are redeeming qualities but when it comes to it there is really only the main drag, Vitosha, to hang out on.

I did 10 days there last year and got pretty bored after 5.

Have spent a few days in Sofia. Overall - I'm not impressed. Its just not a very pleasant city to stay as a foreigner.

The biggest issue is that to really excel here, you'd need to learn Cyrillic and speak some Bulgarian. But if you're going to put in that amount of effort, why not just go to Russia, Ukraine or Belarus directly, or even learn Polish which has the latin alphabet? Plus, there are no Duolingo courses etc. for Bulgarian.

There is a lack of infrastructure for things that (comparatively wealthy) foreigners would take for granted. There is no Uber, meal delivery is very expensive and with a limited selection, and some credit or debit cards don't work here or will have your transactions flagged as fraudulent. You'll need to pay cash for a lot of things.

In certain areas howling street dogs at night will be a problem, air pollution is bad, and the city streets are not well maintained.

The upsides are the weather and the quality of the tap water. Even from just a few days of showering and bathing here, my skin is glowing.

The girls looked better than comments in this thread lead me to expect.

Language issue sucks, no real language issues in BGD, but also a lot of the stuff in serbia is in the latin alphabet so it is easier to read. Well if you learn Bulgarian you can also go to Macedonia, and from my understanding of linguistics a lot of Bulgarian can be understood by a serbian and vice versa.

Lack of infrastrcture is common in Balkans. Issues finding ATMs, Western Union 24hr locations, 24 hour fast food, 24 hour convenience stores, etc. I ran into a lot of issues you're talking about like this in Macedonia, even in the capitol. Difficult to use bank cards too if you're at a restaurant. From what I understand uber has 0 presence in both serbia and macedonia, so then you start worrying about taxi scams and general safety.

Air and water pollution are also an issue in the balkans. the water is supposed to be safe to drink, but don't swim in the river! It is a pretty well known fact that industrial enterprises dump waste into rivers or illegal dumps.

I was there for a short time a few years back and the whole city looked like a post soviet warehouse

Saw some interesting sites, but mostly I thought something like Plovdiv or the like would be where to go ...

There are ATMs everywhere here in Sofia (although not quite as numerous as pharmacies perhaps, where you can sometimes find five or six within a hundred meters of a reasonably busy intersection).
24 hours fast food is a bit more tricky. I virtually never order anything, but I know a service called Foodpanda is popular.
There are 24 hour convenience stores (I even have one across the street out here in the suburb where I live), but they are definitely not everywhere or easy to find.

Stick to a few of the most reliable taxi companies (and look out for copycats with similar names) to avoid scams. OK Supertrans and Yellow Taxi are good. And actually the time I've been scammed in my years here have mostly been from just one company that I never use anymore (1 Euro).

Air pollution is a huge problem in Sofia, I think it's the worst in the EU. I don't drink the tap water here, but many locals do.

Plovdiv is a really nice little city with its hills, old town and cozy, lively downtown area. Although it certainly also has its share of ugly Soviet era buildings out away from the center.

I actually think Sofia looks pretty nice in the summer - despite its many ugly buildings - thanks to it's numerous parks and plentiful trees along many streets and roads.

For a EE city I thought Sofia was clean and nice with a lot of space, park, walking spots. I dont get the negative feedbacks. Bucharest was much more of a dump for example.

I agree about Plovdiv. Spend some days there a couple of years ago. Pretty nice city, and the talent around the downtown area was very good. Did not have any problem there. But avoid the gipsy-dominated areas, i have seen prettier pigpens than those areas.

I can only confirm what has been said here.
I have been going to Sofia for the past 5 years and I have met beautiful, well educated, and pleasant women there.

Lol I'll believe it when you actually link a source. Because from my experience a huge chunk from those 1 out of 5 usually moved abroad when they were 4 after the end of communism so the reason they're married to a foreigner is because they grew up in a foreign country. Not that I'd expect much from this forum that casual drops bullshit statistics and "facts".

I got curious and looked myself. I was in a LTR with a girl from Sofia that moved to America after University and while her family and friends accepted me I could not help but to feel like we were not very accepted when going out together around town.

To be fair she was uncomfortably into PDA which even made me a bit annoyed and embarrassed. My vibe was never that great with the hand holding, constant making out and sitting practically in my lap in venues or restaurants. I really dislike PDA with a passion.

Hahaha, yeah-while we may get labelled as conservative compared to Western Europe, once we're in a relationship with someone/close to someone we're very touchy feely and into PDA, which seems to take aback people from UK/US/Western Europe. The Sea Garden in Varna during the summer is filled with young couples laying around and making out in public shamelessly. Natives from Japan would be mortified if their youth behaved like that in public.

And yeah, your situation kind of reaffirms a lot of what I've observed. You'd have more luck gaming Bulgarian girls that study abroad/grew up abroad than really the locals. Most in their early 20s here that are reasonably attractive are all dating/in a serious relationship and it's usally always with some local meathead. And the 9/10s are all complete gold diggers that are married to some overweight oligarch twice their age. We have a specific nick name for them called "kifli" which means muffin.

+1 for Bedroom.

Grape Central is a nice, quiet, upmarket wine bar/restaurant. Reserviations recommended. Good place to host dinners, for building social circle etc.

Generally speaking, Sofia is comparable to many other Middle European cities. Some Österreich-Ungarn architecture, Ottoman, Soviet Brutalism, and contemporary buildings. The cuisine is a bit of everything for everybody, you will definitely find something you like. Compared to US and UK, much less "chain" shops. It is a pleasant mixture.

Also +1 re Plovdiv, but its quite off the beaten track. Lots of sights (Roman amphitheatre, Ottoman/Armenian houses in the old town etc). Day game not easy - its a quiet, nice, middle-sized town, so an inversion of Ed-Hardy-clad trucker-cap-wearing jocks might cause some raised eyebrows. Running solo might be better. Try the Turkish cafe in the mosque building (entrance on the left), there you get Starbucks-antithesis coffee, half of which you can then use to "read" your fortune. In the old town, there should be an ample supply of fashionably run-down hipsters cafes where Vans-wearing twentysomethings should feel at home.

I spent the Summer in Sofia once with the girl I met in RockNRolla (I really liked the place in 2015, but I think it went downhill later) in the late-Spring. It definitely quietens down in August, when people seem to pilgrimage to the coast - seriously, it's like a ritual sun worship thing.

June, July I think are ok - but tbh I never hung around Studentstown chasing buns/muffins. I would imagine there are less students in Summer.

But I would agree that Bulgarian girls are pretty decent, and most of them will speak pretty good English these days.
