Heading to Bulgaria later this year. Care to answer a few questions as I'm assuming you live there?

That's right, about 20% of girls, I'd say, go topless at the beach. I have a beach house in Bulgaria, near the marina at Sunny Beach, which is about 3 miles from the main drag but still gets decent traffic. At the beach, though, it's mostly foreigners, it gets overcrowded in June-August, and you'd offen see drunk brits&germans puking on the sidewalks, etc.
Some of you guys going to Bulgaria, let me know. I'm off the scene now, mostly (married plus a baby daughter) but I could always tell the old lady I'm going out with an American buddy.

Sure - what do you want to know? There is another topic with datasheets on several cities and beach resorts, perhaps you should check that out first:

K-man just read your Bulgaria data sheet you posted last June, top work!

As someone who lives there can I ask you about the language. I speak passable Russian and I have been led to believe that there are some similarities between Russian and Bulgarian. How true is this? i.e can I travel around with Russian quite easily?

Also may I ask if you are living in a town or village? I've obviously seen the incredibly cheap house prices in Bulgarian villages and was wondering what life is like there.

Cheers.

Unfortunately there are very few similarities between spoken Bulgarian and Russian although the roots of the words are the same.I also believed I could communicate in Russian but it was not the case.Only middle aged Bulgarians can speak and understand some Russian with the young girls it is impossible to communicate this way.

That's disappointing, don't really fancy gaming the middle aged.
Thanks Greek.

Yes,I had communication problems with young chicks although they were definitely interested. The percentage of Bulgarian women who speak English does not exceed 30% in any case.

This is different then my experience - perhaps because I was in the capital city, Sofia, but my experience was that approximately 2/3 of the girls under 25 spoke good English

Brian you are right. I lived in Sofia and most people you encounter (easily more than 50%) speak English just fine.

@Vorkuta - Russian will not serve you well, better to stick to English. Just from watching rap videos on MTV a large % of the young girls have picked up enough to communicate. A lot of them also learn it in school/uni, or go to summer work/travel abroad. I think around half of all college students go to work-travel so for that they have to speak at least some English to pass the visa interview.

Re: cheap property in small villages... it's just for retired folks, nothing to do there but take your donkey grazing in the mountains every day. Property in the main cities and the beach resorts is also not expensive, but not cheap enough to justify buying it when you compare to staying in a hotel.

Hey what's up
This is my first real post, long-time lurker
So, Sofia.. I was there a few weeks back for 10 days, end of Sep/beginning of Oct, so this post is a bit overdue as well.
First off, I made plans with a guy on here to go out, he seemed cool, and it in a general way upped my confidence in the whole trip.. I'd recommend this to anyone traveling to any of these out of the way places..
Also, maybe I had a bit of an 'in', as I was with my father, and he is from Sofia, so I had an excellent quick reply to the 'what are you doing here?' questions.

I live in northern Germany, where it gets really cold, and all the cool people move to Hamburg from my small 80,000 pop city, so my opinion is also contrasted with basically a Danish/German sort of nightlife - not the best. I haven't experienced nightlife in the world's best cities, aside from Hamburg, Berlin and Chicago, so maybe that should be taken into consideration in my opinion as well. But for me - Sofia was amazing!

It was at least 80 degrees, nicer on some days, was like the best days of summer where I live (master student), so that definitely added to my overall mood. I really had women on the brain, and the first day, the first tram my father and I got into, there was this girl sitting there, pretty young thing, and I could see most of her shirt.. her shirt, in big letters, spelt out SEX. Holy fuck, that would never happen in way northern Germany! First day, and I'm thinking to myself, I just might be onto something here.
Arrived on a Tuesday, and kind of skipping ahead, before I left I bought this black form-fitting shirt, and during the week walking around with aviator sunglasses, I was just getting eye-fucked left and right. Again, this shit never happens in north-ass Deutschland. And the women..- the women had breasts! And they knew how to dress! Here, as I read in a post on here about Germany, the women are for the most part small chest, small ass, defined jawline. And the women here on the whole dress like blah, subdued colors, nickel and dime their clothes, not much sense of fashion.. it was just so effin' nice to be in a country where the women were feminine! In Germany, you have to go to the big cities to find this.. otherwise, it's limited to the 16-19 year old chicas. I think it comes down to the girls being petrified of being labled sluts that they are really comfortable not being very feminine (to say nothing of feminism in a country like D-nuts).

So I decided I'd hang out with my father for a few days, and then hit it up on the weekend. I called up my guy earlier in the week, and we made plans for friday.
Friday came around, we met up, really cool guy, had some drinks, and then headed out to Studenski Grad. On page 1 or 2, Studenski Grad was given a 3rd tier rating, but for me it was perfect. Four clubs, Plazza, Jim Beam, and two others, one right next to the other. It's a little strange in that for example at Plazza, you're given a place to sit instead of seating yourself, but there's something that I liked about that anyway (you have a reason to be where you are, etc.). It's 5 leva entrance, Tuborg beers are 3 leva, which means if you're on the euro, everything is half price. Which is the shit. You can get entrance to all the clubs if you want, go from one to the other to the other, and it's only 10 Euros for all 4. Chalga music, people there to party, cool interiors, really made for an 'I don't give a fuck I'm talking to hot chicks' mode. A really good thing was I never felt intimidated by the guys.. only about 20% are these big dudes, the rest were not as big as I (I could tell they didn't go to the gym), and this intimidation, or 'I might get into a knife fight' sort of thoughts I had, just were meaningless. Again, I also felt that if I got into any trouble, I could tell the guy I have roots, but really I heard things like it can get violent, which were not at all true.

So me and my guy hung out on friday night, danced with these two hotties, got some numbers, good ass night, then I went out lone wolf that satuday while my guy went out on a date with I think this policewoman. Nice work bro.

I arrived in a taxi around 12:30, drank another beer outside the clubs, chilled for a bit, then went back into Plazza. Was cool, drank a few more Tuborgs, chilled, eye contact, but I wanted to go to the other clubs. So I went to Jim Beam, was just ok, went to another place, went back to Plazza for a bit, went to the fourth club, and in the fourth club I started talking up a bunch of chicks. Easiest thing ever. Went on, Plazza, then back to that club to the group I had talked up. Was talking to them, and suddenly this girl is like "I know you". Turns out, she worked at a museum shop my father and I had visited..

(that's another thing.. talking to the girls working in the shops was totally easy and a lot of fun. With a little work, a plan to hang out was just sitting there. Ah, Sofia)

So we talked, went outside, went back inside, and at this point I was pretty drunk but feeling really good. Check out the moment (that's me in the black shirt)

http://s1174.beta.photobucket.com/user/i...3.jpg.html

maybe 20 minutes later, the chick in the black dress behind me (facing away from me), I was making out with her with my hands all over her perfect ass. They left right as that was happening, so I got the chicks number, and closed a few nights later. Pretty young thing.

So they left, and I went back to Plazza. At this point (2-3am) I was feeling great, and scoped this chick.. she totally saw me, felt my vibe, that I was a sexual threat.. but as I got closer, her face turned me off. That's when I realized I was standing right next to this cute little chica. I just gently shoved her on the shoulder and said 'do you speak English?' That's a helluva pickup line around these parts. Right away, turns out she had studied in Illinois. Connection, me not giving a fuck, vibing, it was on, and awhile later we were in a taxi back to the apartment my father and I were staying at. Prob 6am when we got back, were on the couch in the living room, father woke up and walked out, and I said to him, 'we need the bedroom'. Cool guy he is, no problem. Really a great girl, I had the time of my life that night. Also found 'my type' - cute girl (she was an 8), kind of bitchy but not to me, who I can just say whatever I want to (one of the things I said to her was 'I'm actually Nigerian.. I just had surgery'). The time of my life.

So, for me I found my home away from home. Hope ya'll find yours. It's what travel's all about, ... oder?

Mate that post was nice, especially since I can relate to it because I'm also from Deutschland.
Last night I went out here I met a bulgarian who bitched about german girls and proceeded to hit on alot of pussies , but he'd always get disregarded and ignored by them lol.
Was it easy to talk to chicks when you went out? Or were they all stuck up and ignored you?
Did bulgar guys cockblock you?

I really need to get out of here for some time, it makes me depressing here.
I went out so often the last couple weeks and I pulled nothing.

Ok,back. So this is Sofia, how i saw it at least.I could describe the city and the people but i dont think it would interest you.
First the very good news.Very cheap in transport with taxis,alcohol-you can open a bottle in a high class club for 25 euro. Also no Turks or Arabs, like in Ukraine or Moldova who spend fortunes to woo mediocre girls and spoil the area. Now for the rest. The women are pretty, mostly dark skinned, medium height and between good figure and skinny. There were very few overweight or obese girls.Though i did say they were pretty i did not see a single woman who was a drop dead gorgeous, perfect 10 girl, like you see in other countries of the area.
The day game. Most people in Sofia have at minimum a basic understanding of English and dew to the large numbers of Bulgarian immigrants in other countries they have a command of other European languages.Greek speakers will find many girls they can talk to.If you speak Serbian you should be ok.Russian however isnt very helpful. The girls in the city are friendly and helpful,so it shouldnt be too hard to strike up a conversation in the streets, metro or in the parks.I usually asked where to find a Levski Sofia shirt.
Eating in the city is very cheap,so anyone with a good appetite will be pleased. For the nightlife now.I would suggest against going to Studenski Grad,as advised by several different Greek students there,as it is mainly full of foreign men trying to pick up local students. That said, keep in mind two things. That most venues the men outnumber the women at 1,5-2/1 and also most Bulgarian women go to bars and clubs in mixed groups. The best places to go,in my opinion are in the centre. You can start at one of the numerous irish pubs around. After that, the places i liked were 1.Bilkova,a basement bar.2.Bar Flight or Buddha,at the ground floor of Rila hotel.3.Bar named just that at the square of Tzar Osvobiditel street.4.Rocknrolla,a basement rock bar on a side street of Graf Ignatiev.5.Na Kraya na Vselenata or On the edge of the Universe, another basement club on Hristo Belchev street.6.Alcohol or C2h5o3,in my opinion the best one.It has a 5 lev cover but it is worth it.Lastly,Sin City is good, though it plays only Bulgarian music and gathers many mafia looking guys it also gathered the hottest women.

Chervilo and Brilliantine were also worth checking out when I was there and are closer to the city center, away from the college students in Studentski Grad

Sofia never got much love, and rightly so, it's a dump. There are much more pleasant places to chase tail. Sorry you have to go there for business, the only thing that will make it bearable is skiing

Needed to be bumped. I have a growing interest in Bulgaria and Macedonia. But I guess I am one of the few on the forum. Some current data on Sofia would be good.

I know it's not summer currently, but I'm eagerly awaiting some beach resort info as well.

Game is tough in Sofia. Pretty much everywhere in EE is easier, plus the place is a shithole. The people are quite rude and unfriendly to boot.

The only upside is cost and skiing near by.

Bulgaria doesn't get mentioned much because Romania, Croatia and Serbia are all much better so why waste your time there.

Could you explain why you think the place is a shithole?

Sofia is easily the worst capital city in Europe, for me(second place Bratislava) the place for me has zero redeeming features. I did not have much love for the locals, everyone was trying to rip me off. Somewhere I have no plans to return to.

Plovdiv was nicer, until I was poisoned in a restaurant at least
