I have no idea how to dress anymore. I'm 19. I don't really fit into any of the stereotypical styles out there like hipsters, gangsters/chavs, sports style or whatever. I think I'm kind of a little bit of all of them. I have no idea how to dress (i.e for summer and for winter). The clothes I currently wear are probably considered dull and bland (summer = simple t shirt and sports shorts with white plimsolls, Winter = hoodie with t shirt underneath, jeans, plimsolls probably again).

Hey Tony, I think you just need more experience. Acquire a taste (this takes time).

I check this site daily: tsbmen.com. It's a brilliant resource in my opinion. See which of the guys' style you like, and try to emulate. Go in little steps. For example, I like Westley (Wes) the best and I sought out certain kind of shirts, chinos and a denim jacket because of some pictures I saw.

This is perfect look in my opinion:

Oh, and learn the basics. You'll need the basics no matter what style. How things fit, how colors work and how to make a congruent outfit.

Thanks. Any websites/links you recommend for:
A) Buying clothes for people my age. I don't know if it is a good idea to go to the same retail stores EVERYONE buys clothes from.
B) To learn the basics on which colors work, how to make a congruent outfit.

I'm not a huge fan of masculine style's 's color explanation. Anyone have anything more detailed out there, especially for brown guys?

I'm 20 myself. I struggle with which shops to buy from as well. Try thrift shops for denim jackets, jeans and outerwear. Even shirts. It doesn't really matter from which retail store you buy your clothes, as long as they fit well.

Bring almost all your clothes to a good tailor. Trust me on this. Fit is way more important than brand or quality (though quality is also important).

I must say I didn't get the masculine style post on colors too well, but I use this when I'm in doubt:

https://kuler.adobe.com/explore/

It generates color schemes. When I want to wear a dark blue shirt and brown clark desert boots, for example, I search for "dark blue brown". All kind of color schemes come up and I try to match one I like with my outfit.

Again, it takes time. I've been studying style for 6 months now and I've seen huge improvement, but I'm nowhere near great style yet. I think it takes 2 years to get consistent good outfits.

Hope that helps.

What I consider great high/low style:

Denim jacket again, used as a layering piece this time.

Awesome thrifted overcoat and waistcoat.

Cool blue palette.

Different shades of brown, where texture provides interest. Ridicilously cool leather jacket.

This is where I hope to be at in 2 years or so...

For men of colour you should wear colour.

Experiment with warm colours like light pink, purple, lilac, red and orange. These colours will look against your skin.

I find too many guys wear black and it doesn't always work or do them favours.

Nordstrom is having their pre-anniversary sale this week and official next. Super sick sales. Fly girls walking around. Go....

Good tip DVY. I'll be there. BTW, one quick tip for picking outfits: 2 pieces that contrast, and one piece complementary/neutral to one or the other. What does this mean? Dark pants/light shirt. Dark shirt/light pants (or light blazer/jacket). Fit, fit, fit.

RRL, Nordstrom, Brooks Brothers, are my favorite stores/clothes as of late.

I was thinking about picking up a blue-ish gray plaid sportscoat. Thoughts?

http://shop.nordstrom.com/S/boss-black-j...s-_-1_11_A

And a seersucker suit like this. It has a lining, so I am not sure if its true summer suit. Thoughts?

http://shop.nordstrom.com/S/boss-black-h...Id=default

I messaged WIA, but he hasn't gotten back to me yet. The sleeves on the suit were a bit long. They had to be taken in almost an inch. The buttons would be right against where the sleeves would end. He mentioned something about it being a lot to take in.

End result would be 1/4 inch of fabric beyond buttons. Thoughts?

Like the seersucker, not the other one. How does it compare to the seersucker you can get a J Crew? I'd have a look at that one...it's probably cheaper too.

About the same price. Checked online 456 (j crew) versus 535(boss) on their pre-annivesary sale. The drape on the boss was fantastic and the fabric was nice. I think it retails for about a G (double the j crew).

The buttons are likely non functioning so they have some to work with.

An inch is quite a lot. Are you sure its the right size for you?

Did you try a size lower, or a short rather than regular?

I dig the seersucker, and being Boss it will be a solid suit for the price.

@Laner- Im a 42L. Seersucker suit- The shoulders were perfect, torso was very close (needs a bit of waist supression), length was perfect for torso. Issue was shortening sleeves (1 inch). The suit was unhemmed though.... 42R is too short for me.

The plaid fit almost perfectly OTR (boss as well)- Perfect shoulder, torso, waist supression, length. Just a 1/2" off the sleeves. I respect your fashion advice, so some honest thoughts would be appreciated.... Whats your thoughts on the plaid?

Some more info 6'2, Asian( light skin/dark hair aka high-contrast), broad shoulders and slim waist.

I have till 4 or so today to make a decision.

edit- whats the issue w/taking it in an inch. Can they not reposition the buttons? Im a bit of a tailoring noob, so bear w/me here.
2nd edit- Nordstrom has a tailor onsite to make alterations...if you get a nordstroms card, you get 100 dollars free alterations

^ a decent tailor will fix all issues for $50 or less. Arms and suppression.

I would make sure the fabric is high quality before dropping money on a suit though, quality + longevity is more important than a price tag.

Suits are like shoes, if you buy cheap because things are on sale you'll burn more money long-term.

Good idea to day game at nordys.

Note also be certain you are getting the right lapels, shoulder structure and color you want. A peak lapel should be used for shorter guys (5'10) and shorter, would use a notch lapel for taller guys, would recommend an unstructured shoulder set up for muscular guys or else you look like a box = unattractive.

Funny, I just recently bought a Hugo Boss from Nordstroms.it was a trim fit suit. I am a 42r(i am 6ft but i like reg. better than long). But based on the cut i needed a 44r. I have wide ass shoulders also so I invested a fortune tailoriNG the suit. Now it looks custom made.

Being honest, I dress nothing like this. I dress in stuff as simple as http://www.esquire.com/cm/esquire/images...411-lg.jpg

Is that really bad?

Also since this is 'style' (more than just clothing)... how often do you guys get your hair cut? When I get a nice hair cut/style, it looks good but as my hair gets longer it doesn't suit the style and I kind of have to use a different style until I get another haircut (and then revert back to the original style)

Out of the two, the seersucker is a clear winner.

Not that the sportcoat is wrong, or not nice. That is a traditional style sportcoat, and therefore might come across looking that way.

But fit is everything. What I might do is pick it up and have it tailored heavy. Raise the armholes, tighten the sleeves, bring in the waist... but now you are going to be paying a bit of money for all this. The danger is that OTR it will be roomy in the arms (the nature of a sportcoat).

What did you end up getting?

Tony, I found asking for the barber to throw a bit of fade into the bottoms of your hair to be really helpful with your problem. Or at least to delay it a little further. This is assuming you go with short hair that is, at least around the edges.
Around the "lines" of your hair, like where it ends around the edges is where it seems to grow out fastest. So when I get the fade it at least delays the lines from getting too scraggly. Wish I knew how to post pics I got a haircut like 3 hours ago.
My usual style is sort of like this:
(picture this from the top down)
A little extra at the front just to distinguish me from other buzz cuts
3 all on top
2 in the middle, probably about 2/3 of my hair is #2
1 along the bottoms and about 1 inch up my side burns
And straight up zero around the edges, but hardly enough to notice.

This is all just my 2cents, im hardly a suave style sensei but I had a homo hairdresser buddy and this is what he taught me and I've been putting into practice since.
Cheers dudes happy hunting out there

I hate summer, my legs are very skinny so I hate wearing shorts but when its 32 degrees out you kinda look odd if you don't.

Can anyone reccomend something good to wear on my legs on hot days? Either nice cool trousers or shorts that don't look too awful with chicken legs.

Basically when its hot like this I tend to hide indoors and avoid women as just have no idea how to dress for hot weather.

BTW I deadlift, calf raise and squat like a motherfucker, just got bad genetics my calves are only 2-3" thick where my ankles are. Wrists are tiny too.

I wear summer weight oxford cloth trousers. They are so light, almost cooled than shorts (for real).

Or go for linen. I have a couple pairs of light linen pants that are nice and cool but get wrinkled when you sit, so they are more of a nice evening pant for when you wont be sitting much.
