Guy in the Cracked article sounds like a giant pussy.

5. Yeah, it stung for a minute. Then it was numb for the rest of the procedure. The doc and I talked about basketball while he cut my nuts. I went home and stuck a bag of frozen peas on my balls. I went to a BBQ with my old Army buddies the next day.

4. Oh, you bleed when you have surgery? Someone alert the media!

3. It took this pussy THREE MONTHS to clear the pipes? I tested clear (no sperm) after three weeks. This guy might need some Viagra, or a hotter wife.

2. Yeah, you should probably not get a vasectomy if you think you might, ya know, WANT KIDS IN THE FUTURE.

1. My urologist asked me exactly once why I wanted a vasectomy. "I don't want kids." That was the end of it. No permission slips from the wife, no bullshit, just snip-snip-snip.

Any of you guys get a vasectomy out of pocket with no insurance? What are good prices for it.

I got a V when I was 25 (I'm 30 now). Similar case to bacon - banked some boys and off ya go. In my initial appointment my doc was just like 'oh you haven't got kids, don't want any? *shrug* Fair enough, a lot of people feel that way' and booked me in. He was the 2nd doc I saw though - first one refused me on the usual basis.

The procedure itself isn't without risks (it's a surgery after all) and I did do a lot of research prior to making the call - and TBH my biggest concern was developing post-vasectomy pain syndrome (PVPS) - long term, chronic ball pain. Statistically very small chance of developing it. But those that did get it.. well, you only need to do some reasonable googling and forum hunting to see what they have to say. I decided to roll the dice and any wave of ball pain I had post-op (like a gentle kick in the nuts) had me shuddering at the thought I was a statistic. Initially it's normal to expect some discomfort (I was icing my balls for a good 3 days cause of my paranoia) but basically I was back to work within a week (doc gave me good coverage to use my sick leave). But I suppose it took me a good 6 months to a year to be absolutely recovered - meaning no waves of ball pain even in day to day life.

Never wanted kids, never had any paternal drive - and shuddered at the thought of knocking up THOT and being taken for (at least) 18 years alimony. Sure, I'll be a different man in 10 years time to what I am now and it's reasonably possible I may change my mind. But I gotta say I do enjoy my care free raw dogging and this is essentially what you're paying for (I like that surcharge analogy). Sure - birds will tell you they use contraception but it didn't give me the complete peace of mind the snip does.

I also agree on the premise if you can't afford IVF well you probably can't afford kids either. I already know I'll be in a position to finance IVF easily enough at say 40+ if I happen to want kids that much - sure, I'll chuck out the 20k for the treatments and see what happens. Even then I know my odds are slim and I'm happy with that all the same.

In the end, it's a completely personal decision and only you know if it is or isn't right for you. But you certainly shouldn't have it thinking that there's a reasonable chance you'll want kids in the future. Consider it permanent and then proceed (or don't) accordingly.

Basically you're paying a rawdog convenience surcharge the way I look at it.

That is a fair perspective, but it also fair to say its actually cheap insurance against child support/shot gun marriage, etc.

If you think things through before the procedure, the odds of needing a reversal are probably quite low.

Of course, I'm older than you (and possibly wealthier) so I may have a different perspective.

I had my vasectomy on Friday. I'm 57 and I don't want any more kids.

The doc used local anesthesia. I have honestly had dental work that was more painful. It was 15 seconds of a burning sensation for each of my tubes and that was all. I have taken it easy all weekend but I have not had one minute of pain all weekend.

Overall, it was a piece of cake.

The procedure I had was called "scalpel-less" and was virtually painless. You DO take a needle to the nutsack but it's SMALL and I've definitely had much worse pain at the dentist (as Floridian1 mentioned). 30 minute procedure and easily walk out yourself and drive home. No need for special shorts, nor much more than a pack of frozen peas the next day. Reversability is NOT something you want to count on. If you're not in a situation to make a lifelong decision then don't do it.

Cost was minimal. I don't remember exactly but about $500. My guy can be found at http://www.drsnip.com. I"m sure a quick call would get you all the details.
