Elbow pain, pull-ups, and getting old
12-15-2017, 10:34 AM
Pull ups are my favorite exercise and I tried to add some extra every week. When I did 240-250 per one training (8 reps), I had also problems with elbow by that time.
I decreased total number per one training (80-120) and I don´t have big problems, although sometimes I feel a little pain, but that´s a part of workout.

They are my go to exercise as well.
I have graduated to the gymnastic rings. I get a much better workout with them.
That could be a solution for the OP, the straight bar is a bit unforgiving.
Sounds like you have tennis elbow.

The gym I currently work out in has rings. Maybe I should give them a try. Am I correct to imagine that they're harder than a fixed bar? That is, if my max on a fixed bar is 15, I'll only be able to do 12 or 13 on rings?

Yes, they are a lot harder than a straight bar.
I can only do 12 max on the rings compared to 25 on a straight bar.
If you can do 10 without swinging, that is a great start.
Every chick looks when you are doing them, if that helps.

Might be dangerous since I'm married and trying to avoid that slippery slope. Heh.
I tried them for the first time a few days ago and managed 10 on my first set, 8 on my second, and 5 on my third. This is super setting with 10 unweighted tricep dips after each set of ring pull-ups, then resting for 1:30.
I'm tall and the rings are a little low so I had to bend my knees. I don't think I swung around much (I try to avoid that whenever I do any kind of pull-up) but I'll have to pay better attention next time. I did touch my shoulders to the rings and come all the way down to a cm or so short of a lock out (someone once told me you shouldn't completely lock out at the bottom of a pull-up).
I was going to say that I didn't do much worse than the same super set the week before with regular bar chin-ups, but my workout journal says I did 10, 10, and 6 that day. So yeah, considerably harder like you say. Anyway, thanks for the suggestion. I'm looking forward to seeing what they can do for me.

If you guys do high volume of pullups (I do 6 weeks of 5-6 days a week at times) the hammer grip is a lot friendlier to your elbows and shoulders, as well as ring pullups as your elbows get to move around.

Not sure what you meant by your comment.
I'm not even going to bother watching that video.

I assume he meant that he believes I suffer from elbow tendonitis and whatever is in the video will help. Yeah though, since he can't be bothered to write a few complete sentences to clarify, who knows?
I think I mentioned this already, but I ended up doing mostly neutral-grip pull-ups as many of you guys suggested for a several months and now my elbow problems are pretty much gone. I recently started doing ring pull-ups as someone else here suggested. Since my gym has rings I figured I might as well try, and they seem promising too. I've actually been able to incorporate several regular pull-ups (palms facing out) lately and so far my elbow still seems fine.
Anyway, thanks again to everyone for the helpful suggestions!

Yeah, I recommended the rings and am glad the pain has gone away.
The thing with rings is that you can do many variations, which will work different parts of your upper body.
Funny story, I was having trouble doing this last time out. So after my workout, I weigh myself and then realized I gained 5llbs over the holidays.
