Die Antwoord

Anybody else stumble across this group or is this a sign I've been living under a rock?

They are a weird band but in a good way. Ninja is a fucking maniac.

The two singers have a kid together but are now "just friends".

Die Antwoord

They came out in like 2010. They're really interesting cause the main guy Ninja had about 7 or more other projects before Die Antwoord. The guy has been dedicated to music and visual arts for his whole life. He makes movies, toys, clothes, art....

Some of his projects were pretty normal rap, he had a concept double-album about a future alien society, and a project called Max Normal, a "corporate hip-hop" group where he wore a suit to try to be "the man."

Lots of his lyrics are disgustingly honest about his struggles with music and self-doubt after years and years of struggle. His last project before Die Antwoord, he had a single where he basically foreshadows the birth of Die Antwoord. In this song he laments his lack of success and half-sarcastically wonders about over-exaggerating his accent, getting into rave, wearing little shorts, losing all content and having a good vibe. And that's exactly what they did.

Ugh I want to break free, why does everybody hate me?
Maybe I should take E, and maybe try to get in with the new rave scene
I'll change my name to Wad E, rock space age shades and shave my body
Sport tight little white shorts, now I'm the man
A tight white vest says "pump up the jam"
Change my accent, make it more wild
Total makeover, change my whole style

With the Tiger Balm inside my palm
My mind is gone, but the vibe is on

They now call themselves rave-rap-zef-whatever.

It's weird because clearly, Ninja is a character like all the other characters he created. Yet he seems so honest and straightforward in his character, it's like he put on the mask of that character and just became it completely. He has been in the music game forever and finally found success at a huge stage, and he's just rolling with it.

Really interesting case-study in self-reinvention.

Here's him as Watkin Tudor Jones, his actual name, from his album Memoirs of a Clone. More of a straight rap album, as far as it goes:

Check out his older stuff, some of it is really very different, and funnily enough, through all his self reinvention, some of his verses or songs are actually reshaped and recycled through the years. Some verses have been featured on like 3 different "projects", despite changing alot about himself, he keeps some things.

This song is so great tho.

Yolandi is just a living embodiment of an optical illusion. Hot/ugly. I think they have a kid together too. And yes, they have been around for a little while.

This video turned up on my Xbox dashboard a month ago and it turned me on to them. I rock this song when working out. They are strange but have some cool songs and beats.

OK, I must've had it all backwards. When I was watching the Die Antwoord videos, it seemed to me that she was really the main act, which made me think that Die Antwoord was really about her and he was the side show (albeit, an important side show). [like, I thought she was basically the Jack White of this band]

I like them.. known about them for years..
they are odd but its visual art.. i respect their style and hustle

At the bottom..you have to realize they are extremely intelligent in their art..and they toss a lot of culture into their music.
they have done some long mini movies that are just fucked up though

its not something i would bang in my car.. but still
