Anyone have a idea of the average price for an apartment in the Meguro Area of Tokyo for a one bedroom?
calwinston: Shout out from Tokyo!
To give you a rough idea, just now I did a quick search using the popular Japanese home-hunting site
SUUMO for one-bedroom apartments meeting the following conditions:
- located in Meguro Ward (目黒区)
- within a 10-minute walk to the nearest train/subway station
- area of 30 square meters (323 sq.ft.) or greater (I think this is a fair approximation of the "stir-crazy" lower limit for foreigners, lol)
- built within the past 15 years (so it doesn't collapse on your head during the next huge Kanto-area earthquake)
There is no way for me to quickly calculate an "average" monthly cost of the
1,047 hits that this search returned, but monthly rents with the above conditions start at JPY 92,000 (USD 736 at today's exchange rate of JPY125=USD1) and run all the way up to USD 5,000+. It goes without saying that you could find even cheaper places by easing up on the building age/distance to station/square footage demands...
Here are links to the five least expensive properties. The pages are in Japanese but they all have 10 or more photographs you can flip through, as well as floor plans.
JPY 92,000 (USD 736)
JPY 102,000
JPY 105,000
JPY 109,000
JPY 110,000 (USD 880)
In case you're wondering why I don't point you to an English-language site for Tokyo real estate: Yep, they exist but they contain about one-tenth the number of listings as the standard Japanese sites. Hell, you'd almost think the Japanese have something against renting to foreigners
