Another great feature of windows and android viper is the ability to import convolvers, which in layman's terms mean that your phone and PC can sound like ANY audio device (marshall amps, ipods, old tv's and radios...) or effect (outside the club, space, underwater,, classic walkman megabass, turn any sound into "yo-yo"...).currently in existence, provided you can record or find the impulse response files (.irs and .wav). If you have time to kill, you can read more about convolvers here.

To install convolvers in android, just copy them to internal memory->ViPER4Android->Kernel, open viper, make sure convolver is ticked, press impulse and select the one you want.

For windows just make sure the button near convolver text is to the right and has changed color from gray to blue, press the black arrow and load them normally like any other file - it's pretty straitforward for windows.

One thing that makes Viper4Android currently better than the windows version is the cross channel option - it determines how loud the volume leakage will be from one earphone or speaker to the other one - simply put, it's stereo done right and the result is VERY pleasant. I keep it at 25.

There are great convolvers in this thread, but if you get bored with those convolvers, just use google to find them, they aren't hard to find, or for the producers in you, record your own samples.

I found a great preset for all you metalheads, just select the settings from my xda acc:
Quote:Quote:

Here's my awesome preset which I tested on consumer quality (read: cheaper) bigger speakers (the ones which have only 2 wires to connect) - you can hear the bass guitar very clearly, drum pedals create a nice thumping bass effect (double bass pedals will make you eargasm, maybe it's too much for death metal), vocals and cymbals are perfectly clear... it even keeps most of the music details through WALLS! Just go to the bathroom, close the door, and listen! You'll still hear the music almost clearly!

Okay, the only thing left to explain is the various 3D effects of Viper - after reading this you'll be setting up reverbation and surround like a pro!

Field Surround
This is your standard surround made much better by viper - it creates a "field", also know as a mono or stereo field.
Field surround strenght controls the "obviousness" of the effect - the higher the settings, the more obvious it is - it "pushes" more of the sound to the left and right.
Mid image strenght controls the clarity - the stronger this setting, the nicer the vocals and mids, but it also weakens the etheral sound - special effects in songs, like ambient keyboards, are weaker.

Differential Surround
Also known as Haas effect, this is a "stage" surround - great if you want a nice "concert-like" sound. Basically, it turns one audio stream into two identical audio streams, plays one stream, and after some time you have set (say, 10 ms) it plays the second audio stream - if you've ever heard an echo, then you know how this works.

Headphone surround
Great surround for earphones and headphones (especially high-quality ones) - experiment with strenght level to find your favorite setting.

Reverbation
Now we're getting somewhere! If you set this up correctly you can have the sound that will sound like it's coming from another area - you can make it sound like it's coming from a concert, bathroom, auditorium... You may be put off by the number of settings you can change, but it ain't that hard - just read below.
Room size is the size of the virtual room for the sound - increasing this will increase the echoes and "widen" the sound.
Sound field is the width of the room above - to set this up correctly, just take the room size you set above (let's say you put in 100m^2), divide it by the width of the room above you (let's say it's 14 meters wide), and you'll get your setting (100 divided by 14 is 7.14, so you'd put in 7m).
Damping factor is humidity compensation (seriously!) - this setting compensates for tiny water molecules that absorb the echoes in the sound - the higher the humidity of the virtual room, the higher this setting needs to be set, and the echoes are absorbed more easily. Increase this until the echoes are heard like you want.
Wet signal is the volume of the modified sound, while dry signal is the volume of the original unmodified sound - I don't think I need to explain how to use this.
Just so you can understand this type of 3D effect even more clearly, I'm gonna quote the official viper page for easy setup:
Quote:Quote:

For environments with low air humidity such as living room, auditorium and other indoor environment, you can use room size and sound field to define the area of the virtual environment, water vapor content values from 0 to 20, the reverb signal values 20 to 50, the proportion of the original signal to take value of about 50.
For environments with high air humidity such as bathroom and other indoor environment that contains a lot of moisture, you can use room size and sound field to define the area of the virtual environment, water vapor content values of 50 to 100, the reverb signal values 40 to 80, the proportion of the original signal value of about 50.

If you've got the time, all the settings are explained here; it won't take much of your time (5-10 minutes?) but you'll understand how to use viper like a pro - do yourself a favor and read the page! You'll thank me later.

The explanation above isn't fully correct; this delays the sound from one channel to the other (one speaker to the other) by the amount of miliseconds you set.

Important edit: there's a new very easy root method, it works on many HTC's and Sony's using Jelly Bean and Ice Cream Sandwich (android version over 4.0, go to settings->about phone to see your android version), see more here - it says only Sony in thread, but it's reported to work on HTC.
For Samsung phones, LG and Nexus phones go here. These methods are "safe" - no files deleted (still, make a backup, you aren't stupid, are ya?).

Recent PM's and my experience with Viper has led me to discover common issues and problem; if you run into any issues then read ahead:

1. No sound at all from Viper4Windows
  • Viper4Windows works only on Vista or newer - if you have XP then it won't work.
  • If there isn't any sound at all after installing the correct version and restarting your computer run Viper4Windows as an admin and apply the settings - right-click the app or it's shortcut, and select run as admin, or, for a more permanent solution, click properties, go to compatibility tab, and tick the "Run as admin" option - now it'll be run as admin by default.
  • If it says there's an error accessing, that means windows permission aren't correct - open the install location for Viper (should be CTonguerogram FilesViPER4Windows on both 32 and 64-bit), right-click the ViPER4Windows folder, select properties, go to security tab, click the "Advanced" button, and click on the "Edit..." button. Click "Users", tick the full control option, and apply the settings.
  • If that didn't fix the problem, go to Control Panel->Sound, click properties on the device used for sound reproduction (should be either headphoes or speakers), go to enhancements, and tick the "Disable all sound effects" option (if it doesn't works after that, then untick; on mine it won't work when it's ticked).
  • If that fails, go to the "Advanced" tab, and change the quality - apply the settings until you hear the difference - on my PC it works on 24 bits, 44100Hz (Studio quality), while 24 bits, 192000Hz (Studio quality) doesn't.
If your problem isn't solved, visit this page for troublestooting and more info on correct installation and sound setup.
2. No advanced options in Viper4Android
If you don't see advanced options, like reverb and convolvers, press menu in the app, press "UI Setting", and select expert - default UI option doesn't show convolvers, and actually had me wondering where have all the options gone.

3. No sound at all from Viper4Android
  • Press menu and select "Driver status" - this is how it's supposed to look like if it's working.
  • If everything besides processing is OK, then obviously it's installed correctly but isn't processing for some reason - this probably means that your music player is probably creating problems with Viper;

Also make sure NOT to run 2 music streams at the same time (ie. youtube and music player, while calls are OK, they will pause any music anyway) since it will process only the first one. If that happens, pause all the music and sounds from your phone, reopen Viper and play the music again. If that fails, disconnect the headphones or aux cable, play any sound (so the driver is forced to change mode) and reconnect - this will fix it.
  • If that doesn't fix the problem, disable all sound and pause all music, go to phone settings->sound->music effects and select V4A (XHiFi or FX, depending on which one you use the most).
  • If even that fails, open Viper, press menu, select "FX Compatible Mode", select compatible and restart - this will use the EQ and sound settings from the app and try to match them; if you don't like using Viper like that just go to Play Store and download another music player or try the youtube app - that way you'll see if it's the problem with your music player or Viper (GoneMAD is a great player that supports pretty much anything, while it's VERY light on the system and it's almost lag-free - 20 MB of RAM taken at best settings compared to 30-50 MB with the stock player; use google to find the licence file if you decide you like it).
  • If driver status isn't OK, visit the troubleshooting page and follow the instructions (I'll help you with step 6 - to change the app to system app, install Titanium Backup, go to backup/restore tab, find Viper, select it, swipe right to the special features tab and press convert to system app; you can also use this tool to uninstall any app, like carrier bloatware, so they don't take up your RAM and storage).
If even that didn't help you, send the mail to the developer or search and post in this thread - there may be something specific with your phone which prevents it from using Viper correctly, and the dev or another poster may have already fixed the problem.
If you get confused, my inbox is always free - don't be afraid to ask for help.

Big thanks to mental for root and v4a advice. The problem was with my default music player. Gonemad does the trick. I'm going to take a look at the Tasker app next. Thank you for showing us what root can do.

No problem - this way I learn with you.
Try the Xposed Framework - you'll be able to change almost anything on your phone without having to learn anything about android or computers - it's the easiest way to customize your android; for starters, find the XVolume module in the app, select how many steps and you'll have much more control over volume - 45 steps is much better than default 15 and is perfect for Viper.
Xposed isn't really hard to figure out - it's easier than setting up Viper!

In this thread I've concentrated mostly on Viper4Android - it's just easier to set up to have a good sound, and it will have better sound for the same settings.
I've been experimenting with settings in Viper4Windows to make it as similar as my Viper4Android presets, and I think I found them - now I don't hear that much difference between them, though it's still better on android version.
So, if you can't or won't root, or you don't have an android, just follow the instructions below:

1. Download the Viper.zip from Dropbox or Sendspace.
2. Go to your install folder - should be CTonguerogram FilesViPER4Windows, on both 32-bit and 64-bit windows, do not go to "Program Files (x86)" if you're on 64-bit
3. Extract or copy the folders from the zip file here - replace anything it may ask; in the ImpulseResponse folder there will be a lot of convolvers for you to play, and you can even put the same convolvers in Viper4Android. Also, if you've made presets named "metal" and "bass", open the "Profiles" folder to rename them so you don't lose them
4. Open ViPER4Windows, select load presets, and you'll find my two presets - metal which is for metal, rock, blues and similar, while bass is for hip hop, rap, trance...
5. Select "Freestyle" and edit the settings a bit to your liking - edit the speaker size if the bass crackles on your speakers, and reduce the volumes if bass overpowers everything.

Now try it on any song - I think you'll be pleased.
Also, I've set up a bonus for you - whenever you're watching a movie, select one of my presets (metal or bass) if you haven't done so already, and select "Movie mode", everything is set up (just edit the speaker size and volumes if you need to). You'll be surprised at the "realness" and "position" of the sound!
When you're done watching a movie, just select "Freestyle" again and it'll be set up again for music.
I've tested this on bigger speakers with wires for connecting and it sounds almost as good as Viper4Android!
Now you can truly enjoy music even without a rooted android, and if you've got some presets, feel free to post them!

Nope.
I made windows viper sound as close to the android version as I could. Android version is still better, but now there isn't as much difference. Also, both windows and android version can use the convolvers I've included in the zip file.
My post above yours explains how to import my profiles I made using my windows version into your windows version.

When you make your profiles in Viper4Windows, by pressing "Save preset" in the program, they will be saved in CTonguerogram FilesViPER4WindowsPresets folder - here's my two profiles "metal" and "bass" which I've included in the zip file above.

To create your profile, edit any settings (it will save settings for Music Mode, Movie Mode and Freestyle, edit any of those 3 you want saved), press "Save settings", and name it however you want. It will be in the "Presets" folder, and it will have a .prf extension.

After you've done that, go to your install folder, and copy or compress the ImpulseResponse folder (if you've activated convolvers, since convolvers are loaded from this folder) and the Presets folder - remove any profiles you don't want included in the Presets folder, and copy them back when you've compressed or copied the folders.

Now you can share your presets here, do a friend a favor, earn some money (I've been offered to set up Viper for a price... Copying profiles and convolvers makes it easy) or keep a backup.

When you want to load them, just press "Load profile" and load it - every setting you've chosen will be loaded instantly!

There's only two things left to explain in Viper4Windows - how to put it in tray and quickly change presets without opening the program at all, and how to reduce the latency of the sound. First we'll set it up for tray.

---------------------

First, open Viper4Windows, press setting and then press settings.
A new window will open which will allow you to add your tray settings for quick selection. Click the "Add new item" button.
A new UnnamedPreset will be created. Right-click it to edit it's name, select which mode it will load and add presets which will be loaded. Create as many as you need. The end result should look like this - notice the metal.vpf and bass.vpf which will be loaded. Also click the "Minimize app to tray" button so the Viper icon will be shown in tray when you close it, and press Okay to save the changes.

Now, whenever you close the program normally, it will be in your system tray - you can right-click it so you can quickly change settings on the fly, or left-click it to open the program normally.

----------------

For movies, games, and all other programs which need as little latency as possible, open Viper, press setting, and click "Latency setting".
A new window will open, tellling you how long it takes the sound to be heard - in my case it's about 46 miliseconds.
Lower values will reduce the latency, but also need more processing power, and there's a chance the sound will crackle. Try various settings until you find the lowest one which doesn't crackle.
Latency is basically the amount of time needed for the sound to be processed and sent to your speakers or headphones.
Also, equalizer will increase the latency, so use it only for music.

Well, if your speakers can't reproduce the bass at all, then no amount of technology will help - this doesn't create bass, it only increases the quality and volume of the bass. Try it on headphones, earphones or cheap desktop speakers which can reproduce bass - the results should be amazing!

My ears were also damaged in my teens by lots of loud metal music and concerts (maybe not as much as yours) - using XHiFi clarity at 6 dB or more helps a lot, especially on better speakers and headphones, and Cure Tech+ removes the fatigue and ringing in your ears after hours of loud music!

Genius makes some really good cheap computer speakers.
I've been using Genius SP-U150X as desktop speakers - they use USB as power, use standard headphone jack for input, cost about 10-15 bucks in computer stores here, and the sound for the price is really great - the bass rumble can be felt on the table, you can use any USB charger as power, and the 3.5mm jack ensures that any mp3 player, phone or computer can be connected!

Buddy, I understand that you want sounds great for everyone and shit, but I'm a lost cause, the only kind of music I listen to these days is instrumental, because I can't understand words in songs, I just can't hear those sounds. The songs sound nice, but I can't understand LYRICS. It's all mumbledy gumbledy to me, brother.

The sound itself is remarkably NICER coming out using this program, but thats about it.

Reduce the pre-volume and post-volume until your sound card can handle the output.
