Question about using Kindle outside the US.
10-03-2013, 12:36 PM
Hey, Ive decided on buying a Kindle. I live in Mexico.
I have 2 choices, buying one directly from Amazon online for $120 and picking it up at the border, or buying one at Gandhi for the equivalent of $180.
The price difference would be enough to make that choice, but I understand that US Kindles have some restrictions when being used outside of the US. The mexican Kindle would not have those restrictions, but perhaps different priced or unavailable titles. (The way some Youtube videos are "not available in your country")
Has anyone here travelled outside with their Kindles? Can they be used just fine, any problems you have had?
Im buying this weekend either way. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Isn't this only relevant for Kindle models that have cellular radio, i.e. you can buy a book even if there is no wifi. In that case, there may be network restrictions similar to those you might have when you take your cellphone to another country. If it's just wifi, then I don't see how this can be an issue.

I use a Kindle in Afghanistan. If you can get a wi-fi signal, it works fine. The cell signal download option can be a bit more problematic. But Amazon provides any number of download options that allow you to transfer directly to the Kindle via the cable from your laptop (say, if you only have a hard line internet connection).

There are no international restrictions. You can load any of your own pdf books you find or anything found on the amazon kindle store.

I purchased mine in the US, but activated/registered it in Colombia where I live. Works great downloading books from Amazon/documents/and articles from the internet here in Colombia.
