I recently took a trip to Hong Kong from Seoul because in order to get my work visa I needed to leave the country. Upon realizing that round trip flights to Manila were 260 bucks, I decided to take a trip.
Before going, I got into contact with the alumni association of my school in Manila. The president agreed to meet with me and invited me to three exclusive events over the course of the week: "Swiss Night" at the Manila Polo Club, the birthday of a celebrity (Filipino version of Johnny Carson in both function and influence) and the board of investments meeting for the alumni club.
At that celebrity birthday party, about 30 percent of the Philippine economy was in that room (Suit and tie affair). Every ten minutes I was being introduced to a telecom CEO, a mining or cement chairman, shipping mogul, senator...it was insane. I couldn't believe I hadn't made business cards.
I've been studying my ass off to learn Chinese and make big contacts in mainland China, but now I am realizing that it may be a better idea to focus on these developing countries in China's periphery. As a foreigner my skills/network are immediately more useful and I immediately provide value.
I am going to continue this "network infiltration" by contacting the President of my alumni association in countries like Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mongolia, and other countries which will benefit from regional gains.
In China and Korea it has been especially hard for me to make contacts in high places - especially Korea, where as a 24 year old I have to practically grovel on the floor to even be acknowledged by a mid level Korean manager. Not much mobility in countries like that.
I have a copy of a PDF called "network infiltration" that I got from http://www.sovereignman.com. This sort of works like pickup in some ways.
If anyone wants a copy of that PDF, PM me.
