Problem: Tattoos don't get enough attention when every attention seeker has them all over their body.
Solution: Just get in people's faces all the way with the most offensive gesture possible.
A real man would draw attention to himself with his accomplishments. Check that, a real man only wants to impress himself and people he respects.
Good luck getting hired at any job now loser.

Reminds me of Di Canio who doesn't hide that he's a fascist:
He got a few fines but don't think he got in any real trouble. Fascism is quite widely accepted in Italy. Also, the situation in Greece is precarious so it may be an attempt at suppressing right-wing elements.

You know, I don't particularly care for fascism but I do care about someone's right to express their support of it. Just become the majority of a nation may find a gesture offensive doesn't mean that it should banned or illegal. But as someone said above, I think it was done to try to suppress the rise of the far-right in Greece.

I'd imagine that there's a written code of conduct for these pro sports that they gotta follow. I can't imagine promoting nazism would NOT be convered in that code of moral conduct.

This is part of an overall crackdown on racism in European soccer. Teams are leaving the field when there are racist chants or the throwing things at their teammates. Teams are being punished for what groups of fans are doing (which I'm not in agreement with - have them thrown out, but players shouldn't be punished for what some fans do). Players are being suspended and/or fined for racist words/gestures. It's obviously a difficult issue for governing bodies of the sport to deal with, but they're trying.

Attention whoring is exactly what it is. If he's as stupid as his coach says, that he doesn't know what the salute means (of course he does), then he should be banned anyways. What an idiot!

The gesture hasn't been banned and it isn't illegal. He just can't play on the national team anymore---that's it. His rights haven't been violated---he hasn't been brought up on charges or thrown in prison.
The people are basically saying that you can be fascist but you can't represent our national team if you are and we find out. I see no problem with this. You don't have the right to say whatever the fuck you want without people getting pissed at you.

I don't find his explanation implausible. He just put his hand up in the air. A pretty natural salute for someone on a field trying to make a gesture for the crowd, not to mention an ancient Greco-Roman gesture that the Nazis just stole and he's Greek. Really, I've thrown a gesture like that myself tons of times without even thinking...
I hate this ridiculous hysteria we have over gestures and symbols. Try raising your hand in a Roman salute, does it automatically make you think of murdering Jews? No? The only reason people get hysterical over gestures and symbols is because it's a completely cost free way of showing off their great self-righteousness. "Sure, I love to see us bombing any oil rich Third World country that doesn't dance to our tune, but I'm totally against the swastika! I know there's some massacre going on in Africa right now that I don't know or care about, but look at how I'm making a strong stand against Nazi salutes!"

Hmmm, let's see which reaction "white knighting" describes best, the one where
a) you piss your panties because you're so scared of a hand gesture and demand that the police, the authorities, anyone come to your rescue and make this scary man go away?
or the one where
b) you declare this another fake outrage and insist that men should leave mass hysteria to teenage girls
I don't even care if it was intentional. The Nazis are dead history and the ideology looks ridiculous and ancient to anyone today. Politically Neo-Nazis today are a bunch of clowns playing dress-up games and their chance of gaining any power are about the same as the odds that some Napoleonic war re-enactment nerd were to lead France to a new era of conquests. Nazi salute as a scoring celebration should be as much news as someone putting his hand in his jacket as imitation of Napoleon. It's not news at all, the guy is not an idiot, nothing here means anything at all, he just scored and made silly gestures as they always do.
If you take part in this Nazi hysteria you're just handing power over your thinking to whichever propagandist is best at pointing out imaginary signs of Naziism, much like a hysterically submissive religious person might hand power over his thinking to whichever preacher is good at finding signs of Satan in things. And it's not just left-wing agendas, this mass hysteria over things that remind us of Nazis is a big part in how easy it is to fool Westerners to war simply because any strongman with a moustache easily becomes the new Hitler...

He's Greek? The Golden Dawn is trending strongly in Greece right now. I'm tentatively guessing he's expressing solidarity with the movement.
Edit: Oh, he "Didn't know what it meant." Wonder if he picked it up from the Golden Dawners.
I am seeking employment in Oslo, Norway. Any assistance is appreciated.

Scared? Really? Scared of an idiot with a get rich or die trying tattoo? The guy has taken stupidity to art form. I don't see anything scary. Stupid? Yes.
First of all, who said anything about police or the authorities? Let us know. The guy has been banned from the Greek national team. That's it. I'm sure Sepp Blatter called the Greek FA the minute this came on the news. Given the current climate of racism in football it was obvious this was going to happen. This is something you clearly don't understand but people in the world actually have responsibilities like running a business, keeping a good organizational image, etc. They have to look at the bigger picture. Not white knighting for some idiot. The Greek FA did exactly what it needed to do.

You can't even see the irony of your post? You talk of hysteria? The only hysteria here are the people white knighting for this idiot. Everyone else saw a mediocre football player throw a Nazi salute, read that he got banned from the Greek national team and went on with their lives; reading another article, watching tv, etc. But the white knights need to defend! It's their nature...

What is this crap about white knighting when we're talking about a pro soccer player?

You're applying the term white knighting to any man defending the actions of another man. Or even just disagreeing with the punishments delivered to another man. You're making the umbrella over which it applies larger than it needs to be.
If this story was about a Greek woman who had compared all men to Holocaust deniers, been suspended from her government job and then made money from TV interviews - and forum members were backing her up, then you'd be a able to have a pop.

Is this guy any good? He could be a clown who the coaches wanted to get rid of anyway.
The real question is: would they ditch a star player for the same thing?
