Travelling w/o Credit Card

For occasional withdrawals around the world I usually carry a prepaid credit card without ATM fees. I keep the account balance low and recharge as needed, so I'm not worried about fraud/loss.

Credit cards are really only useful for online booking so you don't need to carry a credit card with you. Just remember or store your CC info somewhere . On weekends good luck booking a hotel in a good location just by showing up. A CC is important to have but not nesrsarry have it with you.

If you're worried about losing your stuff or get rob. I recommend going to a tailor shop and have them sew you secret pockets. Much better than those lame moneybelts. You can also add zippers to your pocket too. Lots of people lose their valuable by things falling out of their pockets.

This can backfire. If you need to rent a car for example, the company will demand a regular credit card, the prepaid will not serve.

Credit cards are great. If you know how to use them properly you can get a ton of free shit. Browse the points and miles thread that Global Entry started. Using cash is a huge opportunity cost.

Rocha you're right only relying on the prepaid credit card is a bit risky. I use it as the main card for everyday use. Just keep a second (regular) one stashed somewhere with your passport for example in case the main one is not accepted.

It's better to take credit cards than money, your life would be safer in South America. Always use trustworthy banks for withdrawal and never use it in stores. You mustn't carry around too much money unless you wanna keep a bodyguard or spend your holiday in a hotel room.
