I actually prefer to have the minimum amount of stuff for flexibility in moving, and have a maid come in every two weeks. Having a lot of empty space also gives you flexibility for hosting parties and other events. It also makes the bedroom the natural place to hang out with girls in my place. Having the maid come in will make your place cleaner than 99% of people in your age group and every one will make comments how clean and cool the place looks, because it's not cluttered and dirty like most people's places.

Question for people who hang posters in the house--do you frame the posters? How do you hang them up in a way that looks nice?

Also, what potential problems could I run into if I just printed out pictures from Kinko's to use as posters? It seems like actually paying people for stock posters is a waste of time when I can find anything I want on the internet and print it out.

Yes frame them.

Printing a high quality print at Kosko's will probably run about the same price as buying a poster I think. Plus not a lot of pics on the internet will scale without distortion to poster size.

I think the TWO things you cannot cheap out on are couches and tables. Otherwise, the additional decorations can straight up be bought at wal mart, it's just all a matter of whether or not you have the spatial and designer sense to make it work. My bachelor looks pretty dope and I get a lot of comments from females, but I only spent a couple hundred on decorations in my room.

I suggest lurking more of those design blogs and get a feel for what you like and how you want things to fit and then design your apartment accordingly.

A good rule of thumb if you are stumped on what to fill your room with spacialy, is to stay blocky - no gay new age circular picture frames or "LIVE LAUGH LOVE" twisting picture frames - and keep it monotone and if you have to, go to dark browns. A lot of gentlemen I know try to throw a lot of colour in a otherwise monotone coloured room, or ignore that and use a lot-of colour everywhere and it just ruins the aesthetic by looking too much like a woman's or kids room.

If I had $5000 to blow I'd rather spend $500 on a simple ikea couch and the other $4500 on a custom suit, or a home gym. Who are you impressing by having such a fancy couch?

If you are buying new one from ikea, you need to spend $1000 plus for a decent couch.
There are $300~500 range but those are crap.

I got most of my furniture from craigslist and Salvation Army. A lot of old, but yet high quality, wooden furniture. I had some friends over a while back and they all loved the look of it, said it came across as very homey. I think I'm personally going to stay with that type of interior decorating, it's cheap, I like it, other people like it.

If you are handy and can refinish wood/furniture, there are plenty of deals to be had, with items that need a loving touch and have history behind them.

You can get some great looking leather sofas at Ikea, just go for the most expensive ones (still very affordable and worth it). At $1500-$2000 they hold their ground against more expensive brands, unlike some of the other stuff from them. I myself have a combination of Ikea leather furniture in my living room, paired with Persian rugs (those WERE expensive). It looks great and I've even been complimented on the couches by very snobby characters who have mistaken them for the stuff that will set you back some serious dough.
