I woke up with the sudden urge to listen to The Great Gatsby trailer this morning. The trailer begins with this smooth heavy riff that makes you feel powerful, that makes you feel movement. It makes you feel like your standing on top of the tallest towers staring out over the smallest people.

The song is "No Church in the Wild" by Kanye West and Jay Z.

The problem is, I don't really like rap music much. When I put that song in Pandora, the first song that came up was a Kanye West song that has the hook, "Let's make a toast to the douchebags." That song does not make me feel powerful. It pretty much just makes me feel like a douchebag.

Music tends to influence your mindset and push you in different emotional states. Good music, it's rare. It's hard to find. Once something becomes mainstream it doesn't sound good, dynamic, anymore. It sounds cheap and overplayed. I can't get behind listening to Kanye West. Although I haven't heard a lot of his beats, I just heard his voice way too much to want to follow him.

I listen to a lot of post rock. Bands like Arms and Sleepers, Explosions in the Sky, The Dandelion War, and Sigur Ros. The thing about this music is that at times it tends to sound really depressing. That changes my mood to a more melancholy and weak, almost vulnerable state.

This morning I listened to Commissure and Rattatat. The loud sounds and sporadic crescendos gets a good lively state out of me.

Does anyone have music that sounds unique yet aspires to this type of tone. Anyone know any type of music that instantly changes your state to be more in charge of your life and more ready to move forward? More motivated to begin the day?

My music taste bounces around so much. I agree, music sets your mood. My life would be bland without it....every person has his way of grounding himself, and music is mine.

Baba O'Reilly is a great morning song IMO.

I know this isn't what you asked for, but check out The Weeknd for some soft sexy music. Also, D'Angelo

these are some that I've found good in a background playlist at get togethers or in the car. definitely more of a french house/laid back vibe, but pretty useful.

of course there are times where completely different genres are more appropriate.

I'm really into depressing rock music, and i've had to ween myself off of it because it really does creep into your psyche. i love rock music (i play guitar) and i won't ever stop loving rock music but its not great for the alpha mentality. that's what rap is great for. listen to some dr dre or some jay z to get in the swagging mood.

When i go out now, i go for songs that just have great chill but uptempo vibe. Like This one:

i've found music without lyrics to usually be the best. lately i've been getting back into electronic dance music cause its fun and not about some beta male whining bullshit like 90% of rock these days (and ever actually).
