What gadgets do you travel with?

I now have an Apple iPhone 3, and have AT&T service in the US. I was told it was 4 band and would work anywhere in the world. Will I be able to change SIMs on this phone or has it been locked down and I'll have to get someone to unlock it first.

Also, I have an iPod and am not a fan of Apple because everything is so locked down and when one hardware device breaks, it takes a tremendous amount of work just to get all my music and data to another new device. I'm now trying to get all my music from my second iPod to my iPhone.

If I find out that the iPhone is a pain to use internationally, I will drop it and go to Android.

Translation apps for iPhones or other phones. Is anybody using them? Are they good?

-Wireless USB Sticks (SIM Based)x 2- One for TMobile because in the US they force you to use theirs for 3G+ service. Then I carry another which is a ZOOM 4596 3G Broadband Modem for which you can stick a data SIM card from any country in it and now your have an internet connection on your laptop.

Question-So with one of these dealios I can pull the SIM card out of my Android and viola, I have better wireless reception? Basically works like an aircard?

I'm assuming my phone won't work without the card but I can get another I assume....

Yes, as long as you have a data plan on the SIM card then you just pop it into the USB stick and now it works just like an aircard, yes. You're right that your phone won't work without the SIM, so like you said you just get an extra one. I would only carry one USB stick (the Zoom one as it is ready for any SIM worldwide), but T-Mobile, a lot like the pricks at Apple, fuck you over by ONLY giving you there shit Edge service and not 3 or 4G UNLESS you have their own USB stick. That's why I carry one for domestic and one for international but they are so damn small it doesn't really matter.

What about speed with these sticks. In Philippines they have something called Tatoo which is a USB stick that uses a SIM card in it, but it is pretty slow. I'd say it's no better than a 2G. Truthfully most internet cafes in the Philippines are very slow anyway.

Have you used those sticks in other countries besides Brazil and how was the speed?

Yes, I used it in Spain and Croatia and it worked great speedwise.

What is a data SIM card? Is it the same as a regular SIM card that you use in mobile phones?

Yes, it is pretty much the same thing but some countries have one which is data only so you could not put it in your phone to make phone calls. It is really only meant for tablets. You can also put your regular phone one into it though and it works also.

Let me see... Currently I'm carrying around following electronics:
Asus UX32VD ultrabook. This gives me lots of headache, wifi is shit (keeps disconnecting while everyone around has good connection), keeps freezing, and is way too slow as per config.
Sony HX20V camera. This one is really good - compact camera taking decent movies and pics.
External hdd for a backup. In case shitty asus crashes badly one day.
2 nokias. Work with any simcard in the world (second as a replacement if the primary gets lost/stolen).
Wireless bluetooth headphones.
I plan to get a GoPro Hero 3 with waterproof case (I wish I had it in the south of thailand)...
Out of electronics - head on torch and decent pocket knife. Both very useful from time to time.

I'm sure most of the obvious ones have been covered.

Here is one that might not have been. A good travel speaker. I use the Jambox but there are others as well. The Jambox has bluetooth so you can play music from a phone or computer. It also has a built-in 10 hour battery that charges while it's plugged in.

But you can also just get some cheap $10 ones that won't sound as nice but still perform the task they need to.

Seems trivial, but some tunes in a train compartment or in your pad can be crucial to getting to know a girl and lightening the mood, or upping the romantic aspect. Control over your music in your private space is in general a great way to establish ambiance, and girls like that.

As something to have while actively pursuing girls speakers have got to be there just below a good smart phone or a laptop loaded with travel pictures.

I see Feo beat me.

I also recommend ear buds since they're so much smaller than bigger headphones. Noise-cancelling earbuds are awesome for plane travel.

Here is another set of travel cables (iPod, USB mini, USB micro):

http://www.amazon.com/Griffin-Technology...les+travel

Also a power strip (just get one adapter and plug the power strip into the adapter, then your other US items can plug in to the strip):

http://www.amazon.com/Monster-MP-OTG400-...les+travel

$0.89 for a european power adapter (works in Poland/Ukraine/Russia/Germany/etc.). I carry 4-5 when traveling to Eastern Europe:

http://dx.com/p/flat-to-round-power-plug-convertor-3529

One great thing to have if you're studying a language is a good local dictionary. These are the best for Russian on iOS, 25,000 words with stresses marked and conjugations for verbs. You can tap a button to add a word to a list of slide cards:

https://itunes.apple.com/us/artist/parag...d286763421

I also carry electric clippers (I shave my head). American ones won't work on different voltages/frequencies. Even with a transformer the frequency mismatch will cause American clippers to go crazy (believe me, I've tried several). Better to get one that abroad, or just use one with a battery built in like a beard trimmer (these tend to be smaller too).

I'll add something I've gotten recently but haven't traveled with yet...the Anker external battery pack for charging phones, etc.

I got this one - it's 5600mAH or I think about 3 full charges...but would have considered the slim 3200 mAH if I'd known about it before I got one.

One more to add. It's a small USB dongle 3G modem, but it has a built-in wifi router. So with this little device you can connect to a cell phone data network and then rebroadcast on local wifi for all your devices. It also has a micro SD slot:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NEVlaIUP3r8

EDIT: That one looks to be about $60 online, which is pretty good considering it combines a memory stick, 3g modem, and wifi router.

This one is even better, just released so no pricing. It also has ethernet, and a battery. So you can use it as a normal wifi router, or a 3G cell router (has SIM slot). It also has a battery for 5 hours, so you can use it for cell->wifi connection while mobile. Very cool!

To solve this problem, Zoom makes a travel router which is powered with the USB stick. The stick plugs into it and now wireless is transmitted. The router has one port in the back I plug my phone into and now I have my office phone working.

...

My US cell phone is now also picking up the WIFI signal and I can use WIFI calling now which allows me to make calls from the US # as well as send texts.

If I am making phone calls though it eats up most of the bandwidth so can't really browse the internet at the same time.

Overall, fucking MARVELOUS.

Okay I just ordered the Huawei e355 for $61 which does all of this but in a single little stick. Technology keeps getting better! I'll update when I try it.

I traveled with it a few times. I have the same one actually but the thing is when I was out on the road and tried to plug it in to charge my phone, on one or two occassions it failed. I had to "reset" it by plugging it in when I got back to my room.....also the dongle it came with kind of sucked and broke off....but its pretty useful.

An alternative solution is if your phone has removable batteries is to buy extra ones and stick them in your pocket or something. I did that, the batteries on my phone are only $6 on amazon now so i bought some and left in my jacket...really helps if you're out for an entire day and do heavy data usage.

That happened a few times with my iphone 4 that I use just as a spare now, but seems to work fine with the 5. I always needed this when I lived near nyc and would go out there for the entire day/night. I'm surprised everyone with an iphone that lives in a huge city like nyc that can swallow you up for 24 hours isn't walking around with one of these externals.

Seems way overpriced even for wireless. I bought a 500gb Seagate external years ago for like $90.

I am always renting apartments and one consistent theme in almost every place I stay is a shitty little TV. I have finally solved that problem!

I got the HDMI Pocket Projector.
http://www.amazon.com/Brookstone-HDMI-Po...65&sr=8-11

This thing is tiny and projects a pretty decent picture on any flat wall. I usually keep it at about 60 inches which is huge in a small apartment. Here are a couple reviews....

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eoCu5bJqwpc
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1r9fboBxHu8

I can connect it to my macbook, ipad, iphone, or apple tv. I usually keep it connected to my apple tv which is also super small and only $100.
http://www.amazon.com/Apple-TV-MD199LL-N...40&sr=1-1&

The speakers kind of suck on the projector but that is easy to solve by connecting some speakers. Now I have a home theater system everywhere I go. The projector also has a screw hole on the bottom that lets you connected to any kind of tripod.

I use a gorillapod so I can always find a way to set it up.
http://www.amazon.com/Joby-GP1-D1EN-Gori...gorillapod

It is a sweet set up!

I really like the HDMI pocket projector concept. I'll have to look into those more.

I always bring

-Laptop (Currently HP Pavilion G6)
-Unlocked Samsung Galaxy S2
-Pube trimmer
-Logitech speaker set (one base and 2 speakers)
-Skull Candy Headphones (the big type that cover your ears...I can't stand the little ipod headphones)

Additional great item to see HD movies from your laptop onto the big screen LCD TV in your hotel:
Video cable which in the TV side would be HDMI as this is standard and exist in most LCD TVs in 3+ stars hotel and in the other side would be your laptop output, could be HDMI as well, Display port, Mini Display port or other- check your laptop video output.
