What gadgets do you travel with?

Yeah the modem has worked fine in Sweden and Norway so far. Nice 3G speeds and you can still send/receive text messages while using it (but you can't make calls).

I'm very happy with the purchase.

tidbit
I found out why the 3g usb modem doesnt work with tmobile.
its not that tmobile locks there hardware.
but there 3g uses the 1700 band while everyone else is using the 850 up to 2100. lots of phones dont even use 1700 unless there are pentaband.

I just found this out, cause the android i bought in europe gets everything but that 1700 band.
which means everything works...but tmobile 3g
Im gonna try to look for a usb modem that pentaband and might report back

Doesnt matter to much..I was gonna get one of those new google phones anyway

*Tmobile has a online deal that you pay 30USD for unlimited text, data +100 minutes.
But if you have google voice and then use a program called grooveIP
you can make calls straight through 3g or wifi and never use minutes.

The 3g sim card modem.
Is there a specific reason Qwest..that you chose this one?

I just chose it based on the reviews and it has worked a charm so far across the coast of Spain for the last few weeks. I have even kicked it up a notch as I want to have wireless where I am staying (USB Stick only gives whatever its plugged into internet) AND a wired connection so I can plug in my VOIP phone into the router and now I get my office calls and can make office calls with my US # and nobody knows I am sitting with my feel kicked up in Spain as I am now!

To solve this problem, Zoom makes a travel router which is powered with the USB stick. The stick plugs into it and now wireless is transmitted. The router has one port in the back I plug my phone into and now I have my office phone working.

Zoom SIM powered USB Stick

Zoom Travel Router

My US cell phone is now also picking up the WIFI signal and I can use WIFI calling now which allows me to make calls from the US # as well as send texts.

If I am making phone calls though it eats up most of the bandwidth so can't really browse the internet at the same time.

Overall, fucking MARVELOUS.

See the pic of my setup below

Qwest,

This whole set up runs off a DATA ONLY SIM?

Is the wifi strong?

How much does it end up running you, for let's say, a week?

Galaxy S 3 phone
Brand new Mac book air
Brand new iPad (won that thing)
unlocked 4G Dongle for mobile broadband wherever I am
Micro-sim "thing".. basically instantly makes a micro sim out of a normal sim card.. better than cutting it all apart lol
Connectify-me is a great software for poeple who don't want to pay for wifi on every device they use (funny enough, it's mostly high class hotels who make you pay for that)

that's about it.

Yup, all off one SIM. I have another SIM I buy then for my phone so I have a local # wherever I am.

Note: In Spain I needed another passport (which I have) for the 2nd SIM. They told me only one SIM per passport on the prepaids. I'm pretty sure you could get one from one carrier, and then the other from a different one if you don't have two passports.

If your LOCAL phone SIM has a data plan, it will work also. You will just have to switch out the SIM from your phone and stick it in the USB modem. I did this in Brazil when I first got it but now I buy two of them.

Yup, but depends on the cell service in the area.I found it weakest in Mallorca but it was strong enough still that my boy who was in the hotel room right above me was pillaging my shit and able to send and receive emails at least. He said it was a little slow for him and I have experienced little periods of lag but overall its really good.

Rio- I didn't have the wifi modem yet but the stick worked great to power my laptop on the web.
Barcelona- golden
Alicante- golden
Mallorca- some issues but overall pretty good. The signal wasn't strong enough there for me to make phone calls effectively but the web worked.

Cheap...In Spain using the service provider Orange.es (I think they are only ones that have data only SIMs) it was 30 euro for 30 days and 10 euro of that was for the SIM which I can keep.

Yeah, it has the AC adapter and is battery powered which will last for 2-3 hours.

Glad it's worked our for you too. I got a hardon when I fired up my whole setup the first time and it worked like a charm. Game changer.

I'm gonna search and see if there is a 4G modem (I don't think there is) because then the speeds would be even better.

You have to show a passport to get a prepaid SIM in Spain and I think in most other countries as well. In Spain with the carrier, Orange, they only allow 1 SIM card per passport. So, if I want one for my phone and another for my USB stick, then I need two passports.

I'm pretty similar to everyone here, but I want to suggest a backup battery with a built in flashlight. It's replaced my flashlight in my travels and is super useful when I'm out all day and need to get my phone charged. A small 5amp model has enough charge for 4x your typical cellphone battery. It would of been a life saver during one hike when my GPS battery died. The backup battery can charge tablets too.

Here is one similar to the one I use:
http://www.amazon.com/PowerGen-External-...up+battery

I'm finding I only use my kindle touch during flights, the rest of the time I never use it. I'm testing out a nexus 7 tablet right now, and so far I really like it. It's only 100g heavier than a kindle touch, and I'm finding myself throwing it in my bag when I go out. It might replace my kindle.

I also have a jawbone icon bluetooth headset for long phone calls. I like because it's very small, and it's one solid piece. If I was going to do it again although, I would of gotten an Icon HD or Era for better sound quality. I had a bluetooth headset that wasn't one solid piece like a jawbone, and it just broke after a few months. The Icon has stayed solid in my pack over over a year. It might be a good replacement for your voip phone qwest if you don't have to use it.

I use this flat AC plug adaptor. Works for most of the world, and it's not fucking bulky:

basically creates a wifi hotspot on your laptop. Enabling you to share your wifi internet or broadband connection with other devices. Really neat tool.. I think windows-only though

I bought this Bose wireless soundlink unit in France around 2 weeks ago. The sound is darn good for a portable unit, and I can hook my Ipod classic via a cable but it also has Bluetooth for Ipad or a phone.

Yes, you need photo ID and proof of address to activate a SIM in South Africa as well. Something to do with being able to trace any call or transaction to an actual person. But most people have multiple phones/devices and therefore several SIMS/person.

Interesting that Spain only allows one per passport. It's a bit limiting. But I like the prices you quoted. Is there/ what is the data-cap on the 30 Euro/month deal?

For biz calls I use my cell for call quality. For just bullshitting I use Skype. I already had an account set up, but there's better setups. I think Mixx had the best international calling gig:

I haven't tested it outside of north america, but google voice / gmail is good too, with free calls to the US & Canada.

One gadget in my luggage.

I do pretty much everything with my android smartphone: pics, writing, mp3, video, e-reader...

No need for expensive Iphones, my chinese brand android does the job and costs 5 times less.

No need for laptops on a short trip. Just use Evernote to get your writing done and it will be synched with your other devices. I get access to all my important docs through dropbox.

The only other gadget I used was a flashlight, until I downloaded the "Swiss army knife" App.

I avoid roaming and mobile internet. Just locate your nearest public WIFI spot. Way cheaper and more than enough for your daily dose of Rooshv.com !

-Wireless USB Sticks (SIM Based)x 2- One for TMobile because in the US they force you to use theirs for 3G+ service. Then I carry another which is a ZOOM 4596 3G Broadband Modem for which you can stick a data SIM card from any country in it and now your have an internet connection on your laptop.

Question-So with one of these dealios I can pull the SIM card out of my Android and viola, I have better wireless reception? Basically works like an aircard?

I'm assuming my phone won't work without the card but I can get another I assume....

Yes, as long as you have a data plan on the SIM card then you just pop it into the USB stick and now it works just like an aircard, yes. You're right that your phone won't work without the SIM, so like you said you just get an extra one. I would only carry one USB stick (the Zoom one as it is ready for any SIM worldwide), but T-Mobile, a lot like the pricks at Apple, fuck you over by ONLY giving you there shit Edge service and not 3 or 4G UNLESS you have their own USB stick. That's why I carry one for domestic and one for international but they are so damn small it doesn't really matter.

What about speed with these sticks. In Philippines they have something called Tatoo which is a USB stick that uses a SIM card in it, but it is pretty slow. I'd say it's no better than a 2G. Truthfully most internet cafes in the Philippines are very slow anyway.

Have you used those sticks in other countries besides Brazil and how was the speed?
