We don't need to go that far. The key difference being that the N word has gone from neutral to unambiguously offensive, while 'cholo/chola' originated as a slur and is moving in the opposite direction, at least in the Peruvian context:

El término «cholo» fue usado por mucho tiempo con un tono fuertemente discriminatorio y racista, sin embargo cada vez es más creciente denominarse a si mismo "cholo" como signo de identidad nacional y orgullo de tener sangre española e indígena ya que la mayoría de la población peruana es de descendencia mestiza [10] Si bien no se puede decir que el uso del término carezca de alguna connotación negativa, esta puede variar de muy reducida a severamente denigrante....Es apropiado señalar que la connotación de esta palabra depende mucho del tono y del contexto, así como de quién la utiliza o a quién se dirige. En los últimos años, ha aumentado el uso de la palabra como una forma afectiva entre personas.

In any event, I agree that this is a term requiring due awareness and caution, and now somewhat regret using it so freely in my original post.
