I went to Carnaval in Diamantina a few years ago. It was pretty wild. It is known as being a pegação, a place where people go just to hook up. Carnival in Minas Gerais is usually like that, a big clusterfuck. More guys than girls, girls generally on the uglier side, and the crowd will be mostly comprised of university kids. Wouldn't advise the gringos here to hit MG during Carnival, but during other times of the year it should be ok.
