Sapporo seems to have a lot of potential and maybe less expats. I remember someone saying the j-girls looked different up north. Don't know if that's good or bad.

Yes, Hokkaido is definitely as off the beaten path as it gets in Japan. If your going there to live, and can stand the weather (cold winters), then that's the place to go to get the furthest away from modern Japan. I have a strong desire to visit Hokkaido myself one day, to experience whatever natural preservation that the remoteness might bestow on traditional Japanese society.
