"The nation was in shock. This does not happen in our country," said Thora Arnorsdottir, news editor at RUV, the Icelandic National Broadcasting Service.

She was referring to a 59-year old man who was shot by police on Monday. The man, who started shooting at police when they entered his building, had a history of mental illness.

It's the first time someone has been killed by armed police in Iceland since it became an independent republic in 1944. Police don't even carry weapons, usually. Violent crime in Iceland is almost non-existent.

"The nation does not want its police force to carry weapons because it's dangerous, it's threatening," Arnorsdottir says. "It's a part of the culture. Guns are used to go hunting as a sport, but you never see a gun."

In fact, Iceland isn't anti-gun. In terms of per-capita gun ownership, Iceland ranks 15th in the world. Still, this incident was so rare that neighbors of the man shot were comparing the shooting to a scene from an American film.


The Icelandic police department said officers involved will go through grief counseling. And the police department has already apologized to the family of the man who died — though not necessarily because they did anything wrong.

"I think it's respectful," Arnorsdottir says, "because no one wants to take another person's life. "

There are still a number of questions to be answered, including why police didn't first try to negotiate with man before entering his building.

"A part of the great thing of living in this country is that you can enter parliament and the only thing they ask you to do is to turn off your cellphone, so you don't disturb the parliamentarians while they're talking. We do not have armed guards following our prime minister or president. That's a part of the great thing of living in a peaceful society. We do not want to change that. "

Wow - I could never even imagine that a police force would go so long without eventually taking the life of a citizen.

I like how there's there no anti-gun culture - yet the police are not armed - it sends the right message - they're there to keep the peace.

When I was there talking to a local Alpha guy about the culture, he described how you could go up to the house of the former prime minister and knock on the door. There's no security. He said there was a good chance the guy would answer the door himself.

Now I don't think Iceland has had a Muslim invasion, it's not to hard to get to but it's expensive and I don't think they're handing out asylum passes.

I remember watching some former Icelandic female minister a few years ago saying that Iceland was too boring and she wanted and welcomed immigration from third world countries to basically "spice things up". My thoughts at the time were "what an incredible and idiotic dumbass of a woman, I hope Iceland keeps on being 'boring' and you don't have to face what would happen to your fairy tale country if your wishes were to come true".

These northern countries might be supremely fucked up as far as sexual market and feminism go, but other than that I really do envy their style of living.

Thats awesome. Not that they had to kill a guy but that its the first time they have done it since 1944. Coming from America where it happens daily, and a lot of times under fucked up circumstances. (shooting a unarmed suspect)
I honestly can not fathom what its like to live in a country where there is not daily murders... How the hell do they manage that? No drug problem? No ghetto? Do they not play violent video games?

Iceland is very ethnically and ideologically homogeneous. Such societies tend to have little violent criminality, as everyone is one's distant relative. This leads to high social cohesion. Iceland is also a country of 300,000 or so.

Icelandic people descend from people who have been "domesticated" for centuries, which means that there are not many "feral" people amongst them.

Everyone is drunk during the weekend, which allows people to periodically blow steam off. Better have periodic low-intensity earthquakes than unexpected high-intensity ones.

The welfare state "domesticates" people further. From cradle to grave, like animals in a cage. Comfort and tranquility assured, which is wonderful, but it's a golden cage nonetheless.

Don't think that they haven't thought about it. Muslims are the new Vikings. Instead of plundering fertile lands they plunder fertile social welfare systems then multiply. Look at what's going on in England and France. I'm not trying to hate on Muslims but that seems to be their method of operation.

Iceland is an interesting place. The reason people are well behaved is because everybody knows each other. Or knows somebody who knows you or is related to you. There are only 300,000 people that live there.

That is what I heard. So the whole country is like a medium sized city (by UK standards). But spread over a country it results in alot of small places where everybody keeps track of each other.

Eh, there are 250 000 people in my City and only 4 000 000 in my country, yet corruption and crime is everywhere. I don't think it's that. Also, in comparison to the carnage of USA, a huge country like Germany is really peaceful too.

It's like you didn't read it. Everyone is related. The capital has maybe 150k population or so and the other 150k are all spread over very small towns.

Your city of 250k has people from a dozen different countries - originally who came from varying times of those countries and different parts of the USA.

Iceland was settled roughly a thousand years ago, and the last period of new immigrants was in the 1600s - not 20 or 30 years ago. It is completely different.

Say what you will about the place but I think it is a wonderful country.

Last time I was there some "Eastern Europeans" robbed a jewellery shop on the main st, they did a smash and grab. The funny thing is that the shop had only one security camera hanging over the front door and of course no security guard. This kind of crime was foreign to them, it just doesn't happen.

Culture matters, too. A strong society chooses a strong culture, one that minimizes decay, maximizes the utilization of human capital, rewards the best, punishes the worst, incorporates that which is new and good, and preserves the gods of one's ancestors (or creates new gods).

Dysfunctional societies are often the result of a mismatch between the culture (i.e., the "software") and the people (i.e., the "hardware"). When society is ill, it is necessary to search for a new culture, one that matches the people. Or, alternatively, to choose a culture, and "domesticate" the people over a few centuries.

Wait you mean, small, armed, culturally and ethnically homogenous society is safe and peaceful? This can't be. Those racists they need some diversity, gun control, and multiculturalism up there.
