I'm not sure what pissed me off more: Deen's use of the racial insult or the sanctimony of white people in the media who live in 99.9 percent white towns trashing her for it.
We are what we do, not what we say. You can shame "racists" all you like, but if you move to the exburbs, live in a gated community, and send your kids to lily white schools, who is the real racist?
I can't agree more. I've recently taken to saying more racist things, not out of hate, but just to piss off silly SWPL types. But, only in situations where (at least I think) it's clear by my actions I'm not racist but making satirical commentary about how people think dropping a slur is the worst thing in the world and makes you prejudice, yet they they conveniently ignore facts like that if you but a traditional black name on a resume, it gets half the response as a traditional white name (all else being equal). People seem to hate blatant racism, but so long as they remove themselves from it and don't even have the option to be its fine. I feel you shouldn't be allowed to have an opinion on these things until you deal with it on a daily basis. They focus all their energy's on removing huck finn from the classroom, but don't bother to ask why there are no teachers of colour.
What's worse, the guy who treats everyone equal but has certain sounds coming out of his mouth that society has deemed 'bad', or the guy who uses every proper PC term but still doesn't hire blacks? A good many people would say the former.
Anti-prejudice has seem to taken hold over the language, and not the deeper routed honest feelings and actions.
Read an interesting book about an austistic kid (The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time) and he goes on about how people aren't supposed to call him spastic, but instead they just make fun of him by calling him "Special Needs! Special Needs!" How is that any better? I honestly don't get where this obsession over terms came from.
Even goes so far as that you can't use phrases like "To call a spade a spade" or terms like "Niggardly" which absolutely have nothing to do with anything racist. So I'm the racist because you're ignorant.
