I jacked my fucking claustrophobic Big Provider TEFL job here in 2nd tier Vietnam.

I told an ex-colleague last night "its just a circle of soy boy geeks and fempat unfuckable ham planets, they make the workplace a living hell."

I had to get out.

Spoke to a Viet director and MBA graduate from the big city just now. He said the difference between associating with miserable Tefl managers and other successful expats is night and day.

How was your overall experience living in 2nd tier Vietnam? In general, but as far as dating, specifically.

EDIT (just saw your datasheet), for anyone also curious: thread-68171.html

My experience.

teaching in 2nd tier Asia is a bit like working in a creche on a five star Cruise ship.

The customers are rich, their children are spoilt, the cruise ship workers have to be extra sycophantic to the demanding parents and their brattish children.

Sometimes it’s like being a warrant officer in a shining white suit at a public display with strangers gazing admiringly at you and all the female attention that comes with it.
But that attention I find is very superficial and insincere.

Alot of the time the crazy hours and demands to satisfy the whims of the rich customers make it like being a Filipino buried in the bowels of the ship, slaving away in the ships laundry, desperate to ensure the supply of fluffy white towels for everyone.

Fed up with the demands of the mendacious dickhead fellow-westerner management the Teacher jumps ship.

He finds a humble fishing trawler in the next port (3rd tier) and joins the crew. )ie: a small local English centre).

No longer treated like a workhorse robot..life is rich on the open sea, his coworkers/ ship mates are friendly and happy to share in the fun.

Unfortunately the boats owner back on land (2nd tier) is of the same ilk as the Cruise ship owners and their unreasonable demands and mistreatment of workers leads to the English teacher jumping ship again.

So its back to the bowels of the cruise ship (2nd tier or tier 1) again because there, at least, there is money.

Living in 3rd tier is good and bad. the people can be salt of the earth solid people or they can be sadistic retards. there are alot of misanthropic retards knocking about. and a lot of good people.

The adults have a very hands off approach to parenting, letting the kids run wild and also coddling and indulging them.
Discipline is not strict.
It gets to be stressful as they don't do shit when the kids are yelling and screaming around the foreigner, in fact the foreigner is often their go to distraction for bored fat spoilt shits that they don't know how to entertain.

Living in overheated tin roofed houses with local parents sending their kids to harass the foreigner just so that they can have a moments peace can be stressful. Casual sex is for the resourceful and adventurous.
The young women are tracked and watched within an inch of their life.
Older single mothers are fuckwits who just want a marriage, bank and babysitter as fast as possible.
The govt and secret police appear from time to time and are an enormous pain in the ass.
forget about healthcare.

Its quite something zipping around on a moped past tractors and herds of buffalo, women bringing their produce to town by walking for miles and using a forehead strap to bear their load.

Sometimes of an evening the landscape stretches away in amazing colours and distant mountains.
Dry lightning lights up the whole horizon.
Pigs can be heard squealing as the butcher next door decides that it is the appointed time for them to be dispatched.
A gamma middle aged guy you've never met before approaches to hassle you for no reason.. just because he feels inadequate. A local drunk starts in shouting "Mareen! Airborne!" "USA!"
Local teenagers join in and start yelling with him, "USA! You Go home! Fuck you! Asshole!"

The neighbours are getting blind drunk and want you to drink with them.. like they do every night. They insist on it.

Their wives bring out food and wait patiently on you.

The hill tribesmen can be seen on the darkening road in bare feet and flip flops picking over rubbish or starting their long walk home.

The Viets suspect they are thieves but as long as the Westerner lives on their street, he and his property are under 360 surveillance.. no one will touch his possessions for fear of being lynched.
The neighbours will wander in to the westerners house whilst he is taking a dump, having climbed over his wall, just because they want to talk to him.

A thief tries the same shit and they will get a hiding from the same neighbours.

The Viet are by and large good people. They're mob handed and have no consideration for foreigners as anything other than their employee to be pestered and interviewed relentlessly. They are as racist as all hell.

But then I think most people are just as racist and in-group in their behaviour. And the Viets hearts are in the right place.

It can be stressful and at times it can be good. Depends what people are there for and most importantly what friends a foreigner makes. Being a white god in the 3rd tier is over rated though.

That is some quality prose BV. You simutaneously manage to make me want to go back to Vietnam, and never go back.
