I'm still trying to finish WITHOUT THE KING, about how the royal family of Swaziland lives the high life while their subjects are mired in poverty. Give a whole new meaning to the phrase "Uneasy sits the head that wears the crown".

Yeah I can't believe I forgot about A Prophet, it's a really great film, kind of like a French Arab version of Scarface... very legit.

El Salvador- "Salvador". Stars James Woods and Jim Belushi. Based loosely on a true story.

I swear I saw that movie over 20 years ago. Its good enough to watch twice,IIRC. Am gonna go look for it-thanks! The Belushi whackiness versus Woods earnestness amidst the endless death and trauma of the civil war made a powerful film. The director was skilled enough not to get lost in subplots and show watchers the real deal-the normalisation of the abnormal;the cheapness of life.

I caught Irreversible the other day. Its a French movie that has a 10 minute rape scene and a story that plays backwards like Memento. Good movie that would freak most people out.

I actually prefer foreign films to domestic, specifically because they treat real life with brutal honesty. Sexuality is dealt with realistically, and sometimes explicitly, as is violence. I get a lot of my stuff from http://www.tlaraw.com. I try to find used copies of foreign films on Amazon, as well a deepdiscount.com. In reading you guys' posts about foreign films from various countries, I see so many familiar titles that I already own, or already have on my list to get. On cable Sundance, IFC and many of the other movie channels will run good foreign films.

Das Leben der Anderen (The lives of others)

My only quips with the film were with Wiesler's characterization later in the movie. Overall I think that Ulrich Mühe's performance (and experience in living the GDR, along with his wife actually spying on him) gave his performance a lot of weight.

Plus Martina Gedeck was looking good at the time of filming this movie.

La Jetée

This film isn't realistic, but it is one of my favorite foreign films (you can watch the whole thing on youtube).

I'd post up some links but I have to wait until I make a few more posts.

There's a film out of Britain that I think is cool. It's called "Cass," about an orphaned Jamaican boy that is raised by an elderly white couple in a white neighborhood in London, and he grows to be one of the most feared and respected cats in the UK. It's biographical, based on the book by Cass Pennant. Brit gangster shit is some of the best made, so I recommend it. I saw it on cable.

For fiction, I recommend a film called "Daniel & Ana" from Mexico. It's a story about a brother and sister that are kidnapped and forced to fuck on camera, which will then be distributed on the internet (apparently this is a major racket in Mexico and other parts of the world). It deals with the incident and how each of them deal with the aftermath psychologically.

A really HOT flick is "9 Songs," about a love affair between a Brit and visiting American chick in London, against a backdrop of rock concerts (thus the title). It has unsimulated sex - the real deal.

This runs pretty regularly on cable, but I haven't managed to catch it yet. I generally love films out of Britain, so I'll catch it eventually.

"The Krays" is another gangster flick out of England, based on the twin brother gangsters in the 60s London underworld. It's based on true events.

Has anyone here seen "Mesrine: Killer Instinct" Parts I and II? I like Vincent Cassel's work, so I'm curious if anyone has seen these flicks...

Nope, it's mexican. Try "El crimen del padre amaro", movie against catholicism and conservadurism.

Black Lightning - Russian movie that was filmed in Moscow. It's about a flying car that a college kid gets a hold of but actually has pretty good special effects. I just watched it to hear some Russian and to try and get a better picture of Moscow in my head. Recommended if you're interested in Russia at all.

I've seen "Rise of the Footsoldier." Very gritty. I liked it. I just watched a file out of Britain called "Four Lions." It's actually a comedy about a terrorist cell in London. It's about 4 bumbling, incompetent terrorists attempting to pull of bombings. It's hilarious.

Enter the Void - I guess this one is considered a foreign film. It was directed by a French guy, filmed in Tokyo but is in English. The same director as "Irreversible" so its pretty crazy and trippy.

Damn man you watch a lot of foreign movies. Do you ever bring that up with the lizards to play the "man of taste" card or go on the hunt for filmie chicks? There so many artsy girls into film up here in NY I wish I had time to watch those movies so I'd be part of their niche, considering the guys got little to no game, or might even set you up with their chick-friends.
