There really is more going on this guy that meets the eye. He looks like a whole different species from his earlier pic; totally unrecognizable.

I saw this happen just the other day - a waitress that used to look after our boys nights at a particular restaurant. She was a dance teacher on the side as well as a manager / waitress. Nice looking girl, fit and firm with a pleasant smile. She was as much a draw as was the drinks and food for us.

Fast forward a year or two and the boys nights have moved on - I'm at this new pub watching the Super bowl. Out of the corner of my eye I see this land monster / ham beast lurching around from table to table with a tray. But something about the hair and face are vaguely familiar so against my better judgment I look directly at her. To my utter disbelief (and horror), it is our waitress from the old boys nights. However rather than fit and firm and smiling she is about 100lbs heavier (5'8), disheveled, scowling and an all around mess. Her stomach and back rolls spilling out over her skirt and apron, her hunched posture reminiscent of a Disney creature.

She noticed our party eventually and came over to say hello quite awkwardly - I never asked what happened and only stuck to pleasantries. But whatever she suffered in those two years must have been brutal (even if self inflicted).

The overall look of this girl and that fellow in the picture were very similar, massive weight gain and overall health decline, along with a total surrender to the larger challenges of life. The spark has gone out of both of them.

Looking at the guy in the picture, it has to be hormonal. Sounds like the same thing happened to that waitress girl you described.

Whether it is a primarily hormonal issue, or caused by a medical condition (hypothyroidism for example) affecting the hormones, or a back injury that put him on disability making him a permanent resident on the couch, I don't know.

But something seriously went haywire somewhere under the hood.

I agree. There are plenty of women who will leave a marriage even when children are involved. The impact on the kids, good treatment and provision from the father; none of it matters compared to whether she is attracted to her husband or not.

All signs I've seen point towards attraction naturally dying out between couples after a period of 2-7 years. People staying together after this point has to be a rational choice involving work to keep the bond going (date nights, sex when you don't feel like it, keeping fit etc).

If either party wants to follow their biology rather than making a rational choice to stay together, then they will cheat or leave after the natural attraction fades. Guess how many women in the West would make that choice today?
