Some solid advice here... I already decided to just spend the first month in BBK, and depending on how I like Thailand I will decide whether to stay there, check out another city there, or just head to Indonesia.

When are you heading over?

What kind of dangerous encounters did you have? I got scammed by taxi drivers a couple of times in Manila, but it happened to me in Thailand as well. I also saw an older Western man surrounded by Filipino thugs in a restroom at a night club in Malate called Exclusiv. Just walked past them and stayed out of trouble. I agree, in general, that the Phils is more dangerous than Thailand.

I got taken to a shotgun robbery by dodgy taxi driver when I was drunk.

I've been attacked by a few druggos.

Attempted robbery at knife point.

Ripped off by women, bars and restaurants, supported by armed guards.

Shot at car as drove past village.

Drinks drugged.

Home invasion...

Other than that, it's a nice place.

Maybe I have been lucky in Thailand, but I've had a lot less drama there.

I have to be honest here - most of this stuff I could pass on, but I'm a little jealous I've never experienced the first item on that list.

That sucks. I've gotten into one or two arguments with asshole drivers and this could have easily happened to me.

It's the principle of it all though, you're still paying for it.

Well, in Thailand you are basically expected to pay for it, one way or another. It does not matter that you weren't asked money in advance (nobody does), or the fee was not negotiated (it almost never does unless she is charging much more than the going rate, and you are expected to know the going rates). As all local expats say, the only time you can be sure she wasn't with you in hope to make some money would be if you tried to give her the fair amount of money and she refused to take it.

This was posted long ago, but what is that going rate [Image: icon_question.gif]

Safety

While I didn't have any problem in either Thailand or Philippines, I have to admit, there were quite a few times in the Cebu City, Phils where I felt a bit hesitant in walking in some parts of the town even during the day. For example, outside 99% of the stores in Cebu, there were guards with machine guns standing while in contrast, I never saw any of that in BKK.

just to clarify (after 6 years living in the PH)... the guards don't carry machine-guns. they carry shotguns. but here's the interesting part.. unless they are guarding an open ATM, jewelry store, money exchange or a bank/business person to make a large deposit... all those other 'security guards' you see at the mall and fast-food joints are carrying empty shotguns with no shells. [Image: smile.gif]

most times you see them assisting with opening doors, picking up trash from tables and even mopping the floor sometimes. they are not carrying loaded weapons.

an incident happened earlier this year where two filipinos (rich kids) shot up a jollibee and the first thing that happened is the 'security guard' went running down the street because his shotgun was just for show.

I just spent 10 days in Bangkok and 7 days in Manila so would like to offer some insights to this thread. I'll basically just give the pluses and minuses of each city.

Bangkok
+Excellent night life and night gaming. I had SNLs 4 out of 5 nights I went out gaming and on the 5th night I got a girl to come home with me but was unable to break through the LMR.

+Lots of beautiful, sweet girls many of whom are looking for casual sex.

+A safe, vibrant city with lots of great stuff to do besides gaming. For example, you can visit the temples, learn to meditate, learn Thai boxing, Thai cooking and Thai massage.

+Easy to get around close to the public transit corridors.

-Lots of pros and semi pros and there's no clear line between non-pro and pro. This didn't bother me at all. I actually kind of liked the challenge of getting these girls turned on enough to go home with me for free. In fact, one of the crowning achievements of my gaming career was when I got a serious, high end pro who was an 8, elegantly dressed and at a nice place to not only sleep with me for free but also pay for my drinks. In her own way she was very sweet, admitted that she had a crush on me and kissed me, something she said she never does.

-Thai is a difficult language and most people speak only a little bit of transactional English. But again, there's an upside to this, in night game this forces you escalate physically really quickly. I was able to bang a girl who knew less than about 20 words of English also fulfilling a longtime fantasy.

-Terrible Pollution, overcrowded and virtually no green space.

-Difficult online game. There are lots of time wasters. I wouldn't waste a lot of time in Bangkok with this.

Manilla
+Excellent online gaming. You too can be the king of Filipino Cupid; and as others have said it's not hard to get a ton of notches. I was selective and very hot women came to my place and would have been happy to bang on the first meet. Having said that, I only banged one of these girls for reasons I'll explain later.

I personally find the Filipinas to be just as cute as the Thai girls. I also found them to be more passionate but not necessarily better in bed.

-Manilla's a pretty rough city with not much to do besides malls and nightlife. The pollution is even worse than Bangkok's and the poverty is soul crushing. It is not a safe place. The public transportation is sketchy and the traffic is insane.

Logistics are very tricky. If a girl isn't in the neighborhood you are in or adjacent, I would not even bother. I had a girl come 4 hours to see me. I already had a date with my main girl later on so even though she was amazing I ended up making her leave after a few hours. This felt shady.

The girls don't seem capable of casual sex. The first hour I was there, I met a 7.5 in the grocery store. She is upper middle class (owns condos, has a professional job etc). That night we went out and had some of the best sex I've experienced. Anyway, she got very attached right away and because I liked her, I ended up hanging out with her most of the rest of the time in Manilla. I could have easily had several notches in the week there but ended up with only 2 because I was blocked by my mini-relationship.

It's indeed super easy to rack up notches in Manilla but honestly my sense of compassion and empathy kept my numbers low. While I was looking for SDLs, the girls were looking for something really serious. A couple of times I couldn't bring myself to pump and dump a seemingly innocent, naive and super poor girl who was looking at me as some kind of savior. It just felt really negative. Personally I'm in the business of giving happiness to the women I'm with. In Manilla I often felt like I was going to be taking something very important away from them.

Summary
For a good looking guy who's interested in improving their game skills, I would say Bangkok is a better choice; and it's a fun city to hang out in. For a guy who just wants a bunch of notches, Manila is better. But the girls are often poor and desperate so to me it felt really shady. On the other hand, Manila could be great if you are looking for a relationship or like me, on the lookout for new harem members. The girls are very sweet and if you're selective, very pretty too.

This is a spot on reply. I prefer the Thai people over the Filipinos. It feels like to me that the Fils, are trying to take more advantage of you.

The Thai people are more laid back because of the Buddhist religion. Also the food is way better in Thailand. I cannot do Filipino Food, so strange and very peasant like food.

The girls are also much better in Thailand. I rarely see any super hot girls in the Fils. Whereas in Bangkok you'll see some super Thai stunners, in the RCA area, if you are into Asians.

The other plus side of the Thailand is you have the European and Western Backpackers there as fall back options, if you get tired of the local girls.

I disagree with you first statement. I find Thai people to be primarily interested in money and what they can get from you. Romance spread in Europe since the Middle Ages and in the Philippines for centuries, but romance didn't come to Thailand until the 1960's when Western thought became more prevalent.

Granted, Thai women are far more romantic than Chinese but nowhere close to Filipinas. Filipinas care about money, of course, but they try hard to convince themselves that is not the case and often succeed. Once they know you will be a good provider (meaning any Western man) they will most often fall in love with you.

When you think you are in love with someone, then you are in love with them. There is no difference between true love and infatuation. It is all illusion. But a wonderful illusion to have, for both parties. And one that is possible in the Philippines, not so much in Thailand.

Thai women are always praying to Buddha to give them money. I will take Catholicism any day over Buddhism.

I agree with you on your second statement/paragraph.

As for your third statement, it does me no good as I am in my 50's. I doubt any Western backpacker is going to sleep with me or anyone over 35 for that matter.

One of the inherent weaknesses in a thread like this is that the answers are very different if you are in your 50's versus your 20's. Is it easier to sleep with normal girls (not prostitutes) in their 20's in the Philippines or Thailand? If you're in your 50's, then it is the Philippines, hands down. It's not even a close comparison. If you're in your 20's, it's a different story.

Having said that, last year I was involved with a 26-year-old middle-class girl in Bangkok. Okay, she was a slightly chubby but was taller than average with a really cute face. She spoke good English and had lived in Europe for a year. So it is possible. She liked me a lot and we had good sex but I didn't think she was in love with me. She could have grown to love me, perhaps...
