Cold Climate Privilege at Sochi Olympics

Guys I'm a little angry right now from what is going on at the Winter Olympics. I looked at the medal count and noticed that the top 10 spots are given to countries with colder climates:

All African and South American countries are being shut out from winning. How is this fair? Anyone, no matter where they are born, should have an opportunity for winning an Olympic medal at ski jumping, not just Norweigans. It seems to me that these Olympic games are just an exercise in privilege for those rich countries that have very cold winters. I'm going to start a change.org petition now to correct this injustice.

Winter Olympics is an environment created for white privilege. It's the white people's way of saying - here we will have our Olympics and no black people are welcomed.

It would be nice to ban all sports except running and basketball so our liberal guilt could feel relieved.

I thought it was interesting that Chile would like to host the Winter Olympics and plans to submit a bid.

ROK post in the making?

Climate isn't even a excuse. Australia which is far from a winter nation always sends a team which gets some medals at a steady rate.

Did we forget that Jamaica sent a team to the '88 winter games?
How dare they try to achieve something that they shouldn't!!!
Blasphemy!!!

Funny thing is that they're competing again this year in the 2-man bobsled.

Jamaica is back for 2014 winter games for the 2 man bobsled, but they did not qualify for the 4 man. They use track athletes and they are strong athletically, but it's true, they can't really practice on a cold bobsled course.

The Jamaican national bobsleigh team represents Jamaica in international bobsledding competitions. The team first gained fame during their debut in the 1988 Winter Olympic Games in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, where they were seen as underdogs inasmuch as they represented a tropical nation in a winter sport. The team returned to the Winter Olympics again in 1992, 1994, 1998, and 2002. The team failed to qualify for the 2006 and 2010 Winter Olympics. Led by driver Winston Watts, Jamaica qualified for the 2014 Winter Olympics in the two-man.

I think it's not just climate but also culture and infrastructure. India, Pakistan, Chile, Argentina all have plenty of snow and mountains. Argentina actually has some big ski resorts...I could see either Chile or Argentina as a host country. There are some parts of the country settled by Germans which look rather Bavarian. (Must be why Hitler supposedly escaped there...)

No surprise that Norway dominates Nordic skiing events.

Some others are also interesting...the Dutch are big into speed skating. I guess from having all those canals to skate on.

If only you knew how bad things really are.

Furthermore it's blatant discrimination of women to have them competing in a category of their own.

Snowsports are pretty popular in Aus.

The South-East gets cold in the winter;

Cool runnings was great. Has an India won anything ever? Or too many vegetarians and trolls?

I think if you posted that article a lot of people wouldn't be able to tell it satire. Which would make for hilarious comments.

They used to be really good at Olympic field hockey for some reason.

If you can acquire citizenship in a warm-climate country that doesn't typically compete or send athletes to the Winter Olympics, there's an opportunity...

Really? If one deconstructs the German team's uniform, it is obvious that they left out purple on purpose and that shade of orange is way too militaristic. In fact, I took an art class on Alternative Aesthetic Sensitivities and this clearly signifies that they wore those colors to intimidate the other athletes. There needs to be a penalty for this.

Ha. Have you ever been to Whistler kosko? It's like a suburb of Sydney with lots of young Aussies working in the bars, skiing/snowboarding and generally hanging out.

Also sport is the national obsession in Australia. Even if Australia never had a single ski-resort (it has a few) it wouldn't surprise me to see them win some Winter Olympics medals.
