@Maledefined Awesome post! You need to hook me up with some references when you come back.

Are the most of the people in extraodinary shape? I've heard the most brazilians are pretty ripped...

Also, what percentage so far speak English?

On a side note, it seems I have a data plan on my phone after signing up for Vivo. I did this without the CPF number.

Thx for this tidbit.

1) Out of curiosity, how much do texts cost?

2) How many minutes did you get with your initial payment?

3) How much is it for data per day?

Good luck out in Rio brother! Keep us updated.

I will be down in Brazil as well for a month in a week. Although I'm mostly tagging along with family.

I love Brazilian girls.

@Captian Just getting started out here, let's see how it goes. Going to head out tonight solo. Turned down a girl that wanted me to go way out to see her(Barra). Have a girl coming by tomorrow in the daytime, and things planned for Thursday and Friday. But yes, people are absolutely in good shape. I'd say they're more 'fit' than 'jacked' for the most part, but the women in the gym are something to see for yourself. They'd make a NYC girl working out at NYSC run away in tears and wallow away with a hamburger.

@YB My day game opener was related to my cell phone actually. Vivo sent me all sorts of texts explaining my plan that I could not translate into English. Apparently my 3G is free the first 10 days, after that we'll see. I put R$18 on my plan to begin after a R$10 sim card purchase, so frankly I have no idea how far that will go. I'm using what's app on 3G or wifi mostly for my texting with people so I may not know how far my $R18 takes me for another week.

I would ask girls to translate these texts and then ramble a bit about why I was in Brazil. Got a coup,e of numbers, but I don't know if I'll use them. They weren't of the quality I want to bang here. Actually the first girl I approached with this wasn't a Carioca, in fact she was an NYC girl who grew up 5 minutes from me who happened to live in Rio with her Brazilian boyfriend. Small world.

@Nas Going to be in Rio?

Appears to be a great start! If you have time one day though, it wouldn't hurt to ask around regarding which bus goes to Barra as it's a super nice neighborhood with what I deem to be the best beach in Rio. Also a bonus if you get to chill with a girl out there too.

Gong to explore Ipanema for something to do tonight. It's crazy, but this forum is probably the best place for English speakers to figure out Rio nightlife. There is literally nothing available online to guide me outside of here.

Barra da Tijuca = Cleanest beach located "in the burbs" of Rio.

Good to see you on the ground MD...Friday or Saturday night try to hit "40 Graus" in Lapa....Its a bit pricey and try get there a bit early as there will be a line, but its like 3 levels and and some of the talent there was amazing most of the times i went!.

P.S. If you can samba a little you will do very well there as they usually have cool live bands playing,

Yes, Lapa is in order for Friday. I remember you telling me about 40 Graus. Hope you're doing well in Medellin, Freddy.

Going to hit up Emporio and some Ipanema spots tonight. Might head over to 00 in Gavea is nothing is popping over there.

Keep in mind that "Barra" is not necessarily the same as "Barra de Tijuca". BTJ is often referred to as Barra, but there is another one also.

Emporio is the worst cock fest and filled with many hostel guys who just drink beer on the street. The only thing good is its open late basically every night of the week.

Pop in early to Astor for a drink and see if there are any nice chicks at the bar. I have pulled from there. Right next door is Studio RJ which if they are not open you can at least look at the schedule to note the next night they are. When its open, the line gets long and lots of chicks usually, but depends on who is playing.

Barzin tomorrow (Wed) is there model night. Tons of models in there who go because of a deal between the modeling agency and the club. Middle floor is free, but upstairs is where most of the action is and should cost 40 reais.

Boxea Gavea is good on Thursday and I think its also Sunday night. Tonight it will be dead in all likelihood.

For the beach, skip Posto 9 and go to 12. You'll thank me, that's where damn near every homie chick goes.

Let me know how it goes.

Qwest is right about Emporio, sadly. The best of lucks MaleDefined.

I think I went there in January. Three levels but no live band. The staff was on stage throwing water and tshirts I think. Right outside was live with the crowds getting crunk and drums going off.

The women were friendly. Opened three or four and danced with one. I open in Spainsh then switch to English. Crazy thurderstorm passed but it didnt stop the party outside. I miss the energy Lapa has. 6th Street in Austin and Burbon St in New Orleans has nothing on Lapa in my opinion.

The cycle of disrespect can start with just an appetizer.

Qwest,

Top advice on nightlife there. In that regard we are referring to Barra de Tijuca.

Unfortunately, the weather has been a bit shit since I've landed. I have never seen a cockblock in my life like rain is to a carioca. You'd swear they'd get sick if they went out in it.

Emporio was pretty weak to be honest. Hooked into a cute carioca early, and by the time I knew it wasn't going down, it was well after 1AM, and didn't feel like marching out to find a new spot.

I've got a couple of girls locked in for tomorrow, but I'd like to hit up Barzin by nightfall if at all possible.

I've had a few days to adjust and integrate, tomorrow is the time to hit the ground running.

Hey my buddy Maverick Traveler just wrote a guidebook on Rio. I'm not sure if it dropped yet but check out his site: http://www.mavericktraveler.com/ and shoot him some questions. He lived in Rio for a couple years and knows the scene.

I think you will learn quickly that Emporio sucks and you'll still probably end up there time to time, but I would avoid for the most part.

Definitely try and get over to Barzin tomorrow. The girls get there closer to 12 and a little after. Find prospects early as it can turn into a lot of blood thirsty dudes later in the night which makes it tougher. I hooked up with one of the top super models from Brazil there one night. Unfortunately she lives in South Africa and I was never able to close as she left the next day. I still think about that one!!

The best girls I found to target there though are the hot friends of the models, they are generally more accessible.

I was supposed to hook you up with some of my friends there, I know, but they are mostly all stateside now for summer (they teach at American schools).

Good luck!

So far, I'm finding Brazilian girls to be very flaky. I've had girls cancelling on me at the last minute all over the place. I'm worrying that the iPhone infection has hit Brazil pretty hard as well. If I wasn't so aware of the iPhone infection in America, I wouldn't recognize it in Brazil, but I'm noticing people are incapable of being human beings without their iPhone glued to their hand. Even a number I got yesterday at Shopping Leblon, which is a great place to day game by the way, was a flake for plans tomorrow.

Might suit up and head to Barzin tonight.

Qwest, any of your friends down here now? Could use a wingman who knows the lay of the land.

Welcome to Rio!! It is the Carioca way to be super flaky and will cause you endless amounts of frustration. They are known for this and it will happen time and time again. Don't hold your breath when you have plans with one of these chicks. Keep the first "dates" with them super simple like having them meet you for a coconut water at one of the beach sucos in the middle of the day. Seems harmless enough to them. I would usually invite them to come to the beach and meet me there. Again she doesn't feel any pressure really and knows she can leave whenever.

I wouldn't suit up for Barzin, at most put on a blazer. BUT, as a science experiment you could try it and see how it works. Rio is so casual it would drive me crazy at times. You could suit up for Mirroir but even that would be overkill.

Shoot me a message on fb, and I'll try and link you up with someone there.

So then I assume the proper response is to be super flaky back and brush it off like I am so into my zone that I could careless about the flake.

Thanks for the info. Perhaps the reason I've gotten off to a slower than expected start is because I haven't caught on to just how laid back everything is.

It's funny, I look around and people are at work, but they're not actually working most of the time.

Exactly.

I'm convinced nobody actually works in Rio.

Gonna check out Barzin tonight. Passed it on my daily trek today, didn't realize it was up the block from Emporio. I get what you're saying about the suit being overkill for that gig.

Had a few beers with my landlord tonight. Cool guy, has an interesting gig going on and is a native carioca who has traveled everywhere. He told me that people who come to Rio expecting everything, get nothing. He then said that people who come to Rio for nothing, get everything. It was subtle, but it makes total sense in this town.

In that case, I'm going to work on exiting NYC mode. I'm going to be flaky, unreliable, unstructured and lazy. We'll see where that goes.

It's 3 floors. Downstairs being dinner casual, middle floor a lounge and more upscale, and all the way up the nightclub which you have to pay for.

This type of behavior would drive me bananas. Could you say something like "Oh! I totally forgot! yeah no problem! haha"

I'm going to try something like this today. I'm going to blast a message to a few girls along the lines of, "I forgot if we made plans or not but u should come get coco water w me at posto 9 today."

Last night was...interesting. Might turn it into a short story today if I'm feeling the inspiration.

Stuck on a bus in the middle of a protest. Protesters surround the bus. Shaking the bus. Tear gas. Get out! Run!

It was the most fun I've ever had on a date in my life.

Rio, you are like a drug.
