How about ditch your jeans first?
These days, trendy guys don't wear jeans. You will see guys wearing chinos in different colors.
Couple years ago, I kept wearing jeans (rotate different brands but they still are jeans) and only focused on shirts. Now I focus more on pants.
Start with couple pairs of dockers? I recommend D1 (slim fit)

This is prob a dupe but how you dress depends on where you live, what your build is and what the weather is like.
Unless you're straight playboy and wear suits, then it's easy. Custom buttery suits, beautiful colors that work with your complexion(stylist and trial and error), and hard as fuck solid pair of shoes with a couple accessories.
I'm twenty five and have cultivated my style for years through figuring out what works for me. I can't look in a magazine and try to dupe a look because I'm not a magazine model. I'm 5'8" 160lbs.
At the end of the day my philosophy is to dress like what you aspire to be and what unlocks doors of opportunity. For me that is suits or at least a deconstructed version which is button down shirt, jacket, chinos and hard as fuck shoes.
When I don't wear suits its a white polo v-neck shirt with slacks and hard as fuck shoes.
If you want to make adjustments to your style it's best to start one element at a time until you're comfortable, then move on to another element. Look at guys you look up to in your area and aspire to be like and take cues from what they wear. If they're all a bunch of redneck truck drivers and everybody in your town goes to willy's tavern then just be fresh, smell good and work out and fuck fashion/style. Just throw on a fly accessory like bracelet/watch and get you some fresh 501's and rock the hell out of that white T-shirt.
Buy some cologne and wear a shit load. Maybe wear a trucker cap and have a cool hair style.
However if you want to move up in life then move away and observe the cool people who you want to be around.

I find it weird that the manosphere constantly bitches about how American women have become so masculine; while, on the other side of the fence, we are here, suggesting to other males that they should wear man capris and fedoras.
I agree- don't dress like a slob (baggy sweatshirt, gym shorts, athletic shoes, etc.) but at the same time- there becomes a point where some things just look goofy.
In the magazines- the GQ models look great in the orange tight pants and v-neck sweater with a button-up underneath- but any random guy (out of the magazine context) wearing this around will just look like a clown.
I think the starting point for the fashion inept man learning game would be some nice fitting slacks (sometimes very nice denim), a good button-up shirt (polo works too), along with some nice shoes (not sneaks).
This is 101 - throw in a nice belt, watch, etc. to mix it up a bit.

Cruisen_chubby: I wish you would have read what I wrote before criticizing my and America's entire masculinity.
I put the picture to illustrate the diff between Converse and solid dress shoes. The fedora and cuffed pants are inconsequential. I was not recommending cuffing pants like that it looks a bit absurd obviously but I made a point that the reason they are cuffed and that mannequins in the malls have cuffs like that if you notice is that a NARROWER leghole is aesthetically pleasing.
Your advice is actually exactly what I recommended and I agree with that 100% those silly "fashiony" pics is just what pops up on google images when you put fashion words like "chinos" and the guy happened to be wearing converse which was relevant. On the other hand if you want to wear a fedora or roll up your pants is neither here nor there, not necessarily un-masculine, but that was not the point.

general fashion advice -
your undershirt should never be visible. meaning go with v-necks or wife beaters or don't wear one at all.
your pants should fit well without a belt, if you need a belt to hold them up then you're doing it wrong.
don't wear colors that match your skin tone.
don't roll up your sleeves.
as a general rule, don't wear black.
avoid t-shirts, and definitely avoid graphic tees.

Some good advice has been given. I wouldn't worry about fashion too much since you are moving to Alberta, Calgary is basically a cowboy town.
I am not a lover of jeans, but I have one decent pair of high end jeans and a everyday jean in a levi's 501.
Chino's are always a safe bet, you might want to stay away from the basic colour and get something with a bit of colour. The pastels might be a bit too fashion forward for someone starting out, but like Lights said get yourself a strong nice pair of shoes. I actually own a pair of brogues that are similar to the dude in the picture on the right, the rest of his outfit is looking too sloppy and hipsterish for my liking.
The main thing is to buy clothes that fit and good quality clothes if you can afford it. I tend to buy my vests, t-shirts at American Apparel.

Layering is the most important in style, browse through how japanese/korean men dress and you'll see how good they layer clothing. Then figure out the type of style you want to wear. Fit is the second most important thing as you don't want to wear clothes that do not fit into your body shape.
Like others said chinos are in right now. I have olive, beige, brown and purple chinos. And layering with hoodies, cardigan, sweaters bring a more casual look. Boots complete the look imo, like wolverine 1000's or red wings. I also have little accessories like beads on my arm or a watch or a necklace.
I think not worrying about what you wear is wrong, you are instantly judged who you are upon what you are wearing. Buy slowly is my advice don't rush into buying clothes that you only wear for specific occasions, try to buy clothes that can be worn regularly.

I would recommend skipping the Dockers.
I would suggest checking out JCrew, Banana Republic, or Brooks Brothers for chinos.
But jeans and chinos are items of clothing that are always acceptable to wear, just mix it up.

It's not so much about what you wear, but how you wear it. Like Suits pointed out, the fit of your clothes are very important, even moreso than what the clothes themselves are. I've seen plenty of guys in ill-fitting suits and baggy polos, and at the same time guys in jeans, t-shirts and sneakers that still look sharply dressed. Take into consideration your body type and personal style, and work from there. As you said, you're a t-shirt and jeans kind of guy, which can work, as well as you have jeans with a good flattering cut, and a shirt that hugs your frame in the right places. While jeans might not be "in" right now they are a classic staple and can look great when worn well. Try out some collared shirts with them - button downs, polos, long sleeve, short sleeve, etc. - and find ones that look good on you. Do some homework, hit up a thrift store, and it won't take you too long to go from slob to style while dressing in pretty much the same manner you did before.

Show off the socks. If you like GQ's Facebook page you will see rolled up pants all day. Maybe it's European. I've never seen it in the States. But I live in South Texas which has no style.
To the OP, we have a few threads regarding style already. 4 months in and 125 post you should know that already. Bump another thread or use the search function. There is a wealth of info on the subject already. Start here.

The really really simple answer to how to dress with style - go to an expensive department store and have some one there pick out clothes.
Try a few different styles and test them on the street - casual, formal, etc. Your results will provide your answer.
Or, you could spend hours a week pissing around on the internet reading fashion blogs and trying to catch sales on items which are just never the perfect fit. Short of a gentlemen's suit, fashion and style change a lot and you can waste a ton of time try to stay ahead on this hamster wheel.
