I love this show. I've been watching them back to back all month when I can fit the time in.

While not identical to pitching to VCs (obviously) I like the back and forth and the strategic objections, rebuttals, and back stabbing that occurs between the Sharks and the contestants.

Probably my favorite show on American television at the moment.

Did you watch Shark Tank or the Canadian predecessor, Dragon's Den.

I prefer Shark Tank's people, Mark Cuban is entertaining to watch.

It's fun to watch Kevin O'Leary and Mark Cuban chew out some potential scam.

They lowball a lot of the good ideas. It's great if you like to think on your feet and do a rough calculation of business value while you watch. If you're trying to get funding or clients for your business, it's free publicity.

I watched the British version of Dragon's Den and then Shark Tank.

The British one is interesting because you notice a lot about the difference in the dark/somber Euro/Brit mentality towards venture capital, investments, and risk appetite versus the Gung-Ho Cupcakes and Sunshine American attitude.

The American one is overall far better produced and more entertaining. Makes me believe in the American dream again.

Cuban and Leary are by far the most entertaining. Nobody else even comes close. Leary is probably more entertaining as a character on the show......Cuban has star power but he's not necessarily cracking me up, it's just a cool novelty to see him there.

5 stars.

The original Japanese version, "Money Tigers" is a trip. The tycoons are seated at tables, in what looks like a class room. They arrive, and then break out some briefcases. Out of the briefcases, homiez pull out STACKS AND STACKS AND STACKS of Yen. So the whole squad of folks has cash money just sitting their on their table, while the would be entrepreneurs sit about 5 feet away.

It's a trip.

You should read O'Leary's book.

Favorite part is when they tear someone up. There's been some terrible ideas on that show, along with good ones. Key thing is to have sales and know your numbers

A friend of mine was on the canadian version, she found out about the open call a few days before it was happening, came up with the shittiest idea she could and went there, they laughed the idea out in open call and said you're not gonna make any money but you will be entertaining tv, do you want to go on and get torn to shreds, she said yup and she did and they did. They basically called her a moron.

14 minute mark is her.

Shark Tank is the shit

Even though i already have solid project i am currently working on(a business i am growing on the side)....

every once in a while, my science background kicks in and i have an idea that could be a useful invention.

Any good resources on how to take it from conception to fruition?

Doing some search i came across Menace posts here.

Is there a tidy resources centre that i can use? Because this thread and this thread by YoungGlobalMobile has limited info.

I have already exhausted all of el mechanico's many threads(the lad always came up with a thousand interesting stuff per minute).

what i am talking about is different. I am talking about patentable stuff. It is different.

From the shark tank(yes, i recently finished watching all the episodes from the beginning to the end.) the best strategy is to

#1. Invent something very low cost and patent it.

#2. Easy to make/produce

#3. Potentially in solid demand.

#4. Solid Proof of concept/sales for at least a year.

#5. Step up to the next level in terms of scalability.

Video examples: readerest, ScrubDaddy, Fishing Ammo(gunshot shells for fishing), SoundBender, Game Face Tattoos , BuggyBeds, Wine Balloon, SendaBall, First Defense Nasal Screens, etc.

You get the idea? Nifty inventions that can be churn out, quickly patented, and generate a couple of tens of thousands or 100s of thousands in raw cash. Then to the next idea.

I am not interested in some big arse discovery. Just nifty shit like readerest or soundbender, etc. that can knock-in tens or 100s of thousands of cash into my pocket.

Any resources to use in navigating this world? i will appreciate it.

Who likes Kevin O'leary? He is very harsh and rude sometimes but I like the way he talks.

It's better to have someone yell at you and give you realistic advices than giving you some stupid hope.

In the end, it's all about making money in the real world.

Kevin O'Leary is my favorite shark. He is consistently hilarious and he says what all of the other sharks are thinking.

Sometimes the rainbows and sunshine shit on Shark Tank is too much for me. Kevin O'Leary asks the hard questions front and center to bring everything down to reality after the sharks get entranced by some emotional or entertaining entrance. This guy is all business and I love him for it. Very much a true venture capitalist. The other guys are more like angels.

Also love this show. Kevin O'Leary is my favorite shark with Mark Cuban. Kevin is also the most alpha and I'd say Red Pill of the bunch. He's not afraid to put women in their place and does drop from time to time, even if he has to restrain himself as he is on national tv. I'm sure this guy in real life is pure red pill. I can't stand that bitch Lori. So many times I've wanted to bitch slap her for her snide remarks.

The canadian version, Dragon's Den is very weak in comparison, but entertain.

Does anyone have any experience in approaching a venture capitalist to pitch an idea?

I'd be very interested to hear about it and see how similar it would be to this tv show.

Shark Tank is the dog shit.

A large percentage of the deals that are done never materialize and its just a 'TV show'. I worked with one company that was on the show and got a 'deal' but didn't get anything afterwards and worked on a project associated with a "dragon" from the UK show and its just a televised 1/8th pitch that they run through their regular venture capital business anyway.

@Antitrace, the state of wisconsin had some good programs a few years ago through their business assistance dept that would connect entrepreneurs to VC firms.

Love this show. I'd be intrigued if anyone could provide a comparison to their real-life experience negotiating with potential investors.

Kevin O'Leary tells it how it is.

It's obvious that the only investors they feature in the "So how'd they do?" segment are the ones that actually work, but of course they have to make the process look good.

Google "Project Free TV - Shark Tank Season 1 Episode 9" - then skip to 29:45.

Takes the whole last third of the show, but woman gets a massive deal for "deluxe clothing for women in large sizes" to "end the discrimination". She's after "the 60% of American women that now wear size 12 and up" and constantly makes jokes about her weight as part of her pitch.

Her introductory remarks: "There is a void in the high-end retail market for the modern woman sizes 12 and up. I call her the modern woman because 60% of the American women wear a size 12 and above. It's amazing that noone is really catering to this market. I want to ensure all woman have a chance to buy desirable, beautiful, high-end clothes - not just the skinny models you see in the magazines."

My thoughts: It's far easier to shell out $400 for a fancy coat to feel attractive than a years membership to the gym, although it doesn't fool anyone either.

Can't blame the investors because I think they're on a goldmine. Sad state of affairs. Intriguing viewing.

Entrepreneur: "Mark, say the Mavs are playing in New York and your private jet breaks down."

Cuban: "That would never happen."

A friend out in LA that started her own production company recommended "Shark Tank," but I've never gotten around to watching it. Mark Cuban makes for good tv - I love when he's on sports talk shows because he's always prepared and unafraid. I just downloaded some business-related books from KOBO, and his book "How to Win at the Sport of Business" was one of them, as well as one of Richard Branson's books.
