" He had a way of making me feel I was always on his mind even when he wasn't really spending time with me: a text here, a super-romantic hour or two there. Looking back, I was never happy."

Cognitive dissonance. A woman's true feelings usually come out during breakups or arguments.

Nah, these aren't her "true feelings." She loved him before, but she, like most women, thinks twue wuv is foweva. So if she falls out of love with him, it must not have been true love. So she rewrites history and tells herself she never actually loved him.

Somebody on Alpha Game posted that the way to handle women is to preface every sentence they say with "Right now, I feel that..."

It works here. "Right now, I feel that looking back, I was never happy..."
Makes perfect sense.

Basilransom: Nice way to put it. What you describe is the very definition of cognitive dissonance: changing facts to suit ones overarching ideology or mindset, skewing events so that they suit her newfound "wisdom" that it was not love....
