I've been checking apartments in abnb and the prices are not cheaper than it could cost you a decent hotel with full service. Do you guys really preffer to rent in spite of travelling alone? I don't see the advantages anywhere (at least for Thailand).

It depends how long you are going to stay. It's much cheaper to rent a place (not through AirBNB though) if you will be here for a couple of months or longer. I pay 12,300 baht, about $410 US, per month for my condo. Same place would probably be anywhere between $25-$40 per night on AirBNB, so I save a lot.

Hey Rio did you have to sign a 6 month lease or something ? I'm looking for the same thing but for one month. Bit harder to find month to month and I definitely don't wanna drop $40 a night for a hotel !

I looked at this place in early 2012.
http://www.bangkok-housing.com/apartment...vit65.html
They really wanted longer term tenants, but it seemed that 1 month only was possible for 20,000 baht for a studio including utilities.
Look at it on Google maps, street view. Pretty nice. Good neighborhood. An 8-10 min walk to the BTS, but they have a tuk.

I was actually staying around the corner at "Aravinda Living Home" apartments. Like a hotel room with kitchenette, near new condition, guest friendly. Only problem was the bed mattress was as hard as hell. I layered extra blankets under the bottom sheet. About 800 baht per night.

Am always interested for future visits, in the best value accom as close as possible to Thong Lor or Ekkamai BTS for 1 month or less.

In BKK, I stayed at Banyan Tree, that's the hotel with the SkyBar on the 66th floor. Great place for a first date. I frequently 'forgot' my wallet in the room when it was time to bounce elsewhere there. Make sure to check out Nahm at the Renissance(?) hotel for dinner one night. It's the only Michelin starred restaurant in Thailand.

Also, I stayed at the Ramada on Suk Soi 10. Good location, a few hundred meters from both Asok and Nana BTS stations. They also had a rooftop bar and pool. Overall, for the price, around $45/night, it was a good value. They couldn't give a shit about who you brought back to the place late at night either.

I spent two nights at the Chatrium Riverside as well. Overall, I was disappointed with the quality here. Though it was on the river, it was a bit far from pretty much everything. Not really a place to spend time if you want to be near the BTS. I had one of the Penthouse Suites, but it was nothing to write home about. Things seemed a bit outdated and less than the top quality that I was expected.

Would you recomend us any site where we could find such offers other than airbnb and for other cities apart from BKK?

That's good to know, I read a review of a guy who was in Vietnam and said that in the hotel they asked for marriage certificates to bring girls in lol. I had myself an uncomfortable in Hurghada when I met this superhot russian chick, we tried to go to his hotel and the receptionist didn't let me in... ok we went to my hotel and the same, she couldn't comewtf! Maybe I could have brived the receptionist or find some bunga bunga friendly hotel but I just gave up, man I went to bed alone with bollocks-ache and during the rest of the holidays I just hit on girls from the hotel I was staying. I know Thailand is far to be like the Middle East but it's better to know the local policy on the subject. I heard as well about the Malaysian cops raiding hotels looking for unmarried couples: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/8439899.stm just weird.

She go crazy, is hamster!

Most places want a 6 month lease, with many wanting a year. I have a 6 month lease. Some apartments, not condos, will go for lower lengths. Generally 3 or 4 months. Apartments are not as nice from what I have seen though.

There isn't really a very good website for rentals in BKK, and the ones that are around don't seem to update the listings, so most of the listings are no longer available.

For BKK, the best way to do it is to hit the pavement. Decide where you want to live, I.E. which BTS stop, then Google "thaivisa.com: onnut/ekkamai/thonglor/etc. condo" and see what comes up. Generally it will be some threads with people discussing the best options in that area, and also ThaiVisa classified ads.

Once you get some basic info and recommendations off the ThaiVisa threads, head down to that area and start walking down the sois and checking the places out.

Kobayashi is the most comprehensive site for Bangkok rentals. Don't let the ghetto layout fool you; they have listings, including addresses, photos and pricing for pretty much every available rental in the city.

I can't have sex with your personality, and I can't put my penis in your college degree, and I can't shove my fist in your childhood dreams, so why are you sharing all this information with me?

Rio's right that hitting the pavement is the best option. However it never hurts to have some information from online beforehand.

Tip: search in Thai using google translate. You'll get sites that more locals use and bypass the apartments with gringo inflated rates. Eg for rentals try: หาห้องพัก
You'll get some sites like http://www.tee-pak.com/en/index.html http://en.9apartment.com/ and http://www.apartment-bkk.com/index_en.php

I'm curious to why everybody wants to live on Sukhumvit though. Close to Tex-mex, American style dive bars and Soi Cowboy? To me Sathorn or Lang Suan are right smack in the city, close to the skytrain and have much better environments. I'd look into these places if I need a fuckpad when back in bkk. Sam Yan (where many Chula girls live) and a bit further away Ratchada are also good options as they're next to the subway. You'll find the same types of rooms for roughly half the price around Ratchada if you're willing to take the subway 2 or 3 stops from the Sukhumvit station.

Good observation.
I spent a semester at the other big uni (Thammasat) in BKK (and Rangisit, a bit outside BKK). A very niche move of mine was knowing the pins girls wear. Every uni has a different pin, which is pretty much the only distinguishing factor between the uniforms. Chula and Thammasat are the most prestigious unis there. I knew the Chula and Thammasat pin in my BKK days, which served way too well as an opener. "Oh, you go to Chula?" while similing on the BTS while pointing at her pin. Half the time she goes to some other uni, so then ramble on how you saw the pin but oh, wait, you're right that's not the Chula pin, I'm mistaken blah blah. I have friend xyz at Chula.....

Only problem is she may be in high school, so make sure she doesn't look 12.

IIRC, black skirts signal uni students, and blue signals school children.

Can lead a horse to water, but can't make him drink.

Reading Bang would probably be a smart move given you're on this forum; or, in RCA's case, walking up and saying "hello" will be enough to get you started. Bonus points if you say it in bad Thai with a smile on your face.

Murrb, we went to khao San as well, disgusted by the white girls there we headed to insomnia for some good shoring. I got home at 5am to find a regular waiting in front of my door.... Hairy situation and a potential threesome almost became a "lonesome". We all have lost our first 1000 baht to some bar or taxi scam here...seems a rite of passage.

First update: arrived last night and with zero sleep on the flights I was pretty uneventful. Which was too bad because once that Thai SIM card was put in my phone blew up. One chick wanted to go to soi 11 but I just couldn't do it. Met a TF girl today at the BTS station at the end of my street. I figured I would have to go to eat or something but we walked straight to my hotel. Talked and watched tv for 15 min then went at it. Absolutely no LMR and $0 spent lol. Though I did fuck up because we were rinsing off in the shower and in the moment went at it again raw dog. Uh oh. Accidentally ditched a different girl today A: because other girl was a sure thing B: because I wasn't sure of the flakiness level. Of course as these chicks do she got all drama and saying "good bye have fun in Thailand". I just said ok bye bye and 10 minutes later my Skype is ringing off the hook. Good call on the location tips guys I'm on ss Sukhumvit 55 in Thong Lo close to bts. I don't see many other Farrangs and I don't get asked if I want a suit or any of that bullshit every 10 seconds. Went to Terminal 21 for some food and damn some of these hi-so chicks just stunners. Might go out tonight but the 13 hour jet lag is kicking my ass so we'll see. All in all a decent first day minus me smashing an $80 bottle of Jean Paul Gautier cologne.

I stayed on 55, in Nantra de Comfort, a really good little boutique hotel for less than 1000Thb (in 2011). Where are you?

I went to the free MBK muay thai fights last night but now I want to go to Lumpinee Stadium ones. Im thinking of going Friday night if anyone else wants to go. I saw somewhere they wanted 2,000 baht for floor seats. Anyone have any experience going to the fights before?

I have experience, but it was a few years ago. Friday is supposed to be the best night at Lumpinee to see the best fighters. Avoid Saturday as it is more for the tourists.

I would wait and get the tickets at the stadium, that price sounds a little high. when you get to the stadium, you will most likely get rushed by ticket sellers working for the stadium before you get to the window. Try bargaining with them, they should come down a bit in price.

Also, if you are interested, lots of Japanese chicks go to the fights and always ringside. something about watching thai boys beat the sh*t out of each other gets them worked up. You might be able to hit that.

I would go with you if I were there. I miss thailand!

Glad to see it hasn't gone up in price. It's a pity there's no door on the bathroom though - can be embarrassing if you want to take a dump when you have company. [Image: smile.gif]
