Vienna VS Bratislava (quick impressions)

Vienna VS Bratislava (quick impressions)

I was briefly in both capitals last year so I thought I'd write-up a quick comparative.

So why compare the two? Well, they are only 50 miles apart (the closest 2 capitals in Europe) but are very different. So if you find yourself in Mitteleuropa with limited time, you may want to choose where to invest your time.

TL;DR:
The simple equation is:
Vienna = more opportunity
Bratislava = more talent

Vienna is a major metopolitan area, and a former imperial capital. The architecture is very grand and ostentatious; there are banks here that look like palaces. The city is pretty hopping throughout the week. For night game, there are lots of good clubs, bars, underground parties, art openings, etc. For day game, there are great parks, outdoor cafes and endless grand boulevards crowded with tourists and locals alike. There is just a huge amount of opportunity to game here. My favorite spots are Museumsquartier and Augarten. The girls are pretty varied, but not exceptional. The general look is Germanic. It helps to know where to go, so do your research or pipeline a contact beforehand.

Bratislava is a much smaller city and the vibe is much more Eastern European. The contrast is pretty stark even though the cities are close. The city has a quaint historic old town district and castle (nice views of the city from there). The food is your typical heavy Eastern European fare. Nightlife in Bratislava seems to only come alive on the weekends, otherwise it's reportedly pretty sleepy. However, the talent in Bratislava does seem higher pound-for-pound if you're into the classic EE look (thin, feminine, high heels, etc.) So going out on the weekends you're liable to get whiplash. The girls seem open and friendly and curious about foreigners. I wish I had more time in the city to game them.

All in all, I would have to give Vienna the edge for the sheer volume of options afforded the international player. But I were staying long-term, Bratislava would've been a contender.

Very accurate comparison! I could add that there are a lot of people from EE (some of them hot chicks) living in Vienna.

I'm from Vienna, so to any forum member who wants to come there, feel free to PM me.

I also visited both, I concur with all your points. I didn't have much time to game, but I would figure that girls in Vienna have the same issues as girls in other worldly cities, and Austria's reputation among the Germans is of being very insular. Not to mention lots of the people you run into will be visitors/tourists like yourself.

In Slovakia, you have the language problem (much harder to have some competence than German IMO), but the vibe and energy of the city is very positive and upbeat as things are really taking off in that country, so I'd expect the people to be very open to foreigners. Hung out with saeta119 and some of his pals, they were all totally cool including a couple of gals. I heard there's like 4 universities in the city too, so during the school year the place must be teeming with the country's best talent.

I was only in Vienna for two days and it was weekdays, but the spots that were recommended to me felt too far apart, it just seemed like if you were to go to one place youre stuck there, and there wasnt like a very busy area with lots of nearby places you can go. Except for the spots by the river down from the cathedral but lots of old tourists there.

Compared to Budapest and Prague i felt Vienna was way behind for visitors, it felt like somewhere youd live in not a place youd go to party in as a visitor, but again it was a very limited experience.

Did you find that party drugs or excessive drinking was prominent in Vienna?

I've spent a significant amount of time in Linz and it seemed to be everywhere. I'm not sure whether it was the people I was associating with or a common theme for the city.

I didn't notice a huge language barrier, but maybe I was just lucky. Folks seemed to speak English pretty well in Bratislava. Especially my favorite brand of English: 'Broken English' [Image: banana.gif]

It's true that things are spread out in Vienna. You pretty much have to take the metro everywhere. As with every large city, there are different pockets of activity and nightlife spread out across the city...I felt this way about Montreal as well.

And yes, Vienna doesn't have the party reputation of cities like Budapest, Prague, London, Berlin, Miami, Montreal or New York, but that's what makes it a bit underrated. It IS a bit quieter and more staid, but there's still a lot going on.

Not any more than any other major city.

Try the spots around Museumsquartier: Museumsquartier itself, Volksgarten, Platzhirsch, Passage, Donau, 25 Hours Hotel, Manolos, Lutz and some more all sometimes within a few minutes walking distance and some of them great places. In summer, you have a big crowd chilling outside in the big patio that is Museumsquartier.

Prague and Budapest nightlife doesn't have the quality of Vienna nightlife for me; Prague feels a lot smaller than Vienna. And Bratislava, compared to Vienna, is tiny; it doesn't even have a quarter of it's population. Of course, size isn't everything. The chicks are prettier and probably easier in EE than in Vienna.

Berlin, London, New York - ok, those places are much bigger than Vienna and therefore have a lot more to offer for nightlife, can't compare. For its size though, Vienna is doing extremely well.
