Never been there, but I've heard a lot of good things. Please give us the full report once you've scoped it out. Costs, girls, vibe, beach, etc.

From what I've heard from some people, this might make a good place for an extended stay of a few months or more. But I'd like to get your first hand opinion.

Some quotes from Wikipedia:

"It is composed of one main island, the Island of Santa Catarina (Ilha de Santa Catarina), a continental part and the surrounding small islands."

The city has 42 beaches and is a center of surfing activity. Newsweek placed Florianópolis in the "Ten most dynamic cities of the world" list[1]. Veja magazine, a Brazilian publication, named the city as "the best place to live in Brazil."

A friend of mine lived in Florianopolis for some years, he opened a surfcamp there, that eventually went bankrupt. He brought himself a "patricinha" (it´s how they call the brazilians posh girls) to Portugal and married her. Yeah she´s hot, so I imagine how girls must look down there. From what he told me girls are not that easy, by brazilian parametres.
South of Brazil is definitely a region I wanna hit in the near future, I keep hearing incredible stories about Minas Gerais.

First impressions are very possitive. I can understand why people want to stay here for an extended period.

by bolo do u mean the hefty asian dude? i met him via latin stylez in cordoba about 9 months ago on his way to floripa... hes still there? must really love it.

ive been to floripa before. the beaches are beautiful but the nightlife was nonexistent, atleast when i was there. you might have to leave the lagoa and head to the city center to find more action

Yeah that's Bolo. I think he is in Taiwan now. I asked him to post his thoughts on here. He was in Floripa for a long time.

From what I hear the women are beautiful, but hard to pull. I'm sure gringos aren't viewed as too exotic there either. I hear there are a lot of blond girls. I'll be there next Wednsday. Lumiere, how long are you going to be there?

I live in Sao Paulo, and just spent 3 nights in Floripa last weekend. The weather was shit and I had a bit of a cold, so I didn't get to go as hard as I would've liked... But I figured I'd share my 2 cents. The people tend to be very nice/friendly there, I could definitely see staying a month or 2.

The only club I hit was El Divino, which I believe was in the Centro. It was good, packed with lots of hot girls but since it was R$50 to get in, I think we were getting the upper class of Floripa and the girls were a little 'frescura' as we say in SP (stuck up). A much more laid back scene was in the Lagoa da Conceição area. A few good bars there and it's close to Praia Mole & Praia Joaquina.

Mole seems to be the 'in' beach of the moment, but there's 42 beaches, so a lot to choose from. If you're there on a Saturday (and the weather is good), definitely check out the pool party at P-12. It was on the north end of the island, I think it was R$20 to get in. Even with bad weather it was good and the bartenders told us that it's normally full of tail. On the north end there are also the beach neighborhoods of Canasvieiras and Jurere, which I did not see be heard they can be more family oriented.

In comparison to Rio, I would say Floripa is smaller, just as beautiful and a lot safer. No favelas as far as I could see. But no where near the options for nightlife Rio has. Gorgeous women everywhere in FL, but much more to the blond/German/Italian vibe. Women def have better bodies per capita in Rio (I lived there for 2 months). The only other thing I'd mention is def consider renting a car or scooter in FL, the island is much bigger than it looks on a map and taxis can get expensive.

In my dictionary frescura means "freshness." In english if you say a girl is "fresh," she's actually very flirty. Go figure.

How about the buses? Are the routes easy to figure out? Is the city grid pretty simple? I find getting around in a town where there is a beach is typically pretty easy. I'm usually staying by the beach and I find out which post I'm next to and how many blocks away and I can usually find my way home pretty easily. I have a feeling with 42 beaches that could be a little tougher though.

Yeah the island is pretty big. I hired a car to get around.

I just booked my ticket today. I'll be there next Wednesday. Then back to the headache that is Sao Paulo, then time to see what's up with the Argentine scene.

Yeah, I've lived in Rio 2 months this year, Recife for a month and now Sao Paulo for 3 months (with side trips to Porto Alegre & Floripa), and the tricky thing about learning Portuguese here is dealing with all of the different accents and 'giria' (slang). Not unlike the States, there seems to be a lot of regional slang, and I've only heard this term 'frescura paulista' here in SP. I think in other parts of BR when people have referred to 'stuck up' types, I've heard the americanized term 'snob' (pronounced like es-nob-ee).

Beleza...

Funniest part of it is that being "fresco", the person who has the "frescura" in northeast means that u are a sissy... lol.
Floripa is beautiful, and I recomend for boys and girls also. most of them are surfers and they have a great shape.

Deixa que essa fase é passageira, amanhã será melhor você vai ver a cidade inteira seu samba saber de cor!
