I'm in Bali. I think you are right to say $1500 to $2000 is a good range. You can rent month to month a decent apartment from $100 to $700 depending on your taste. Villas start at $1000 and go to the moon.
Of all the nice beachy places I've been in Asia, Bali provides the most bang for your buck hands down. Its also probably the most developed world class beachy place I've been in Asia. There is a HUGE range of quality services, food, accommodation at all price ranges.
