How the hell you pull 10k a month?

Actually a better question is how do you pull 10k a month and why the hell do you live in Langley?

Even Langley is getting silly - out by the Fort, 1.6 million for a 4 bedroom house. Loonier by the day in the lower mainland. Maybe Chilliwack is next!?

Thread bump: I'm starting a new job in a remote area of BC and on my days off, I can fly anywhere in BC/AB and am thinking of making Vancouver my home base as I really like the city and I'm bored of Alberta. I'm probably just going to look for a room to rent since I'll likely only be spending 4-7 days there each month, hopefully I can get a reasonable priced furnished room from April until September (which is roughly the duration of the job). Do you guys have any advice for Vancouver rentals? Here's a few options I will consider:

-Renting a university sublet
-Short term Airbnb
-Cheap hotels
-Uni/college campus dorm rentals

I don't have to be right downtown but I don't want to be in the burbs either, I'll have a car but would rather live near the Skytrain so I can get downtown. If you guys have any suggestions on areas to live or available rentals, that would be great, thanks.

Coming off a 3 day stint in VanCity with a buddy of mine. Had a blast. Thanks to all the datasheets and those who kept the information up to date.

A shout-out to Laner for all the in depth details on where to go and other logistics. +1! We'll have to grab a drink the next time I get back there.

Very nice city and I wish I spent more time there.

Cheers!

@scotian: Your gonna have to be really specific in order to get good detailed actionable responses. I can literally give you a different neighbourhood for each stop on the Skytrain.

You will want a place on the Canada Line for airport access. That means from downtown to Langara area. I would never go further than that. Even Langara is pushing it I think.

Knowing you personally, I would get a room in a 2bdrm downtown. You know I dig Gastown its not so full of fuckheads there are still enough rednecks and Indians kicking around to make things interesting. It can be expensive, but there should be options- especially when you tell them you will be out of town for 21 days at a time.

My bartender has this situation, his room mate works in GP for a rotation and often hits Russia and other places for his days off so my buddy LOVES it. Its like living alone.

Don't fuck with UBC or Kits. Commercial Dr is a joke and on the wrong line for the airport. Joyce/Collingwood is an option but there is sweet fuck all to do there which is too bad as I see interesting people in that area including a lot of ghetto booty asian broads.

This is my advice. Call me if you need some help setting some shit up.

Thanks for the advice, it looks like I won't be in Vancouver anytime soon as I just found out that I'll be working for the next 100 days or so up north. If I do ever end up renting a place there, hopefully I'll be on a decent rotation like 14/7 so I actually get some time to enjoy the city. I'm out in bum fuck nowhere, in the geographic centre of BC, the town I'm in is only 1500 people but its over 5000 with all of the surrounding reserves, its actually not as bad as I thought it would be, there's a massive lake right next to my hotel so I should haul a few fish of that once the ice melts off.

The thing that I like best about BC is that even the small, remote towns are really nice and there's tons of natural activities to do, unlike a lot of places in the flat Prairies. Once this gig is up I'm planning an epic BC trip where I'll cover most of the province, I'm thinking Vic-Tofino-Port Hardy-Haida Gwaii-Prince Rupert-Prince George-Okanagen-Vancouver.

Hopefully by then I'll figure out where I want to live because I'm pretty sure that I'm done with living in Alberta and will make BC my new home.

I'd love to see a Port Hardy datasheet, chug game at the corner store?

That has to be the most nothing town I've ever been to, besides fishing of course.

I only passed through the town but spent four days on Cormorant Island which is a 45 minute ferry ride from Port McNeill (about 20 minutes from Port Hardy). Ya they're kinda shit holes, logging/mining/fishing towns that have fallen on hard times, there isn't nearly as much money up there as there once was but the hard living lifestyles remain. All the same, the area is beautiful, I went fishing and scuba diving up there and was blown away by the wild life; I saw tons of bald eagles, breaching hump back whales, seal lions otters, you can go on grizzly bear tours and the place is also crawling with cougars. Its probably one of the only areas in BC where you can get a house for east coast prices but there's a reason for that, you'd probably go nuts up there of boredom and shitty weather or get stabbed in the head by a drunk local.

Like I said though, the BC shit holes are so much better than the Alberta ones, at least there's water and good weed!

Its a shitty town only useful to catch the boats. I did see a few high school girls that were hot but you know they are counting down the days to get the fuck out.

The area is amazing though, especially the Cape Scott. One of the most surreal places, the whole area looks prehistoric like a dinosaur is going to come stomping out of the ferns.

One of the hottest girls I ever dated worked summers in Holberg doing forestry work, so who knows what kind of gems you will find in the middle of the BC wilderness.

Boys due to unforeseen circumstances on this cunt of a job site, I'll be flying to Vancouver tomorrow (I land at 1900) and am looking to go on a fucking tear. Chances are that I'll be staying around Granville and Dunsmuir, if not you can find me on the LES smoking heroin and banging Siamese whores, get in touch and let's go on a bad one!

Update: My three day Vancouver bender was a pretty good one, I can't really remember what I did but I do remember having beers with Laner, that's always fun. I stayed at the Patricia Hotel on East Hastings, it was pretty cheap at $55/night but is in the middle of zombie central. The rooms are actually not half bad, they definitely aren't fancy and the decor hasn't been up dated since probably the mid-70s but its clean enough. The pub downstairs is actually half decent, an okay place for a couple of beers and greasy pub fare but once you step outside for a smoke the zombies swarm you for a dart or spare change, they are pretty friendly though and relatively harmless. There were crack whores doing their thing on the corner and a needle exchange place around the block, you'll see people openly banging rigs into their arms and smoking crack on the strip, good times!

I really have to do more stuff in Vancouver other than getting shit faced on Granville and smoking tons of pot at the Amsterdam cafe, I still haven't been to Wreck Beach or the Capilano bridge, maybe next time.

So due to my work, I got to see a lot more of the interior. As I mentioned before, I lost my job which was two hours north of Prince George in a random shit hole that was surrounded by reserves, there isn't much going on in Fort St James besides drunk Natives hanging out but the lake is pretty nice, apparently there's some big fish in it but I didn't get to go fishing there before we got run out of town haha. Once we left the job, I flew to Vancouver and partied as I mentioned above, then I took the boat to Victoria to pick up my car which was sitting in a parking lot for almost five months, she turned over on my first try and I drove it out of the lot, that would never have happened if I had left it in Alberta! I stayed at the Red Lion hotel or whatever that Chinese owned place is called with the strip club in it (the only one in Vic), at $60/night, it was a decent deal. Had beers at the Yates street Tap House then fucked off to the main land the following day.

Kootenays: While getting drunk in Victoria, a former coworker of mine who is based in Vic offered me a quick one week job in Castlegar, I though "what the heck, why not", its on the way home to Alberta. As it usually goes, the one week job turned into two weeks, I stayed at the Sandman hotel on the company's dime and worked at the pulp mill there. The kootenays are a really nice place, Castlegar itself is pretty boring but the surroundings are amazing, I had a day off and decided to drive to Trail. That place is a bit of a dump, but as I mentioned before, even the shit holes in BC are nice, its surrounded by nice mountains and lakes but there's a huge metal smelter there (Teck resources) so the place is kinda dirty, I didn't even stop, I just kept driving another 45 minutes up to Nelson. I didn't stay long there in Nelson, just had lunch at a Mexican joint called La Cantina, the town is awesome, its pretty small but again is surrounded by nice mountains and has a huge lake, I'd like to go back there to do some fishing. Its also full of hippies and grow ops so is basically stoner heaven.

Overall, the west Kootenays seem like a great place, the weather there in early April was really nice, 20-25 degrees. Its a bit too small to live in for me but would be an excellent place to go camping and do all kinds of cool nature shit like hiking, fishing, dirt/mountain biking, etc.

Two days before the Castlegar gig came to an end, I got a call from another company who offered me work up in Prince George, fuck ya, I took it. From Castlegar its about an 11 hour drive, I hate driving that long so decided to stay in Kelowna for the night and get drunk with a buddy from back home.

Kelowna:
I've been there before and its a really, really nice spot. Its like the California of Canada, big huge lakes (with a Loch Ness type lake monster called Ogo Pogo), vinyards and great weather, I think it was 24 degrees when I was there in Mid-April. I stayed at the Same Sun hostel down town, the private room was $60 but it was pretty shitty, I should have just spent the extra $50 for a cheap hotel but the location was good. I met my buddy for beers at a place called Fernando's, there was a metal show going on, then we went to another place a few doors down and there was a a reggae show, pretty random gigs. Kelowna is very clean, well organized and a pretty white city overall but I was surprised to see some hot African chicks running around, they must go to the local college or something.

Prince George Fuck what a dump this place is, I've always heard that PG sucks balls and its true, the downtown is pretty sketchy at night, drunk Natives everywhere and crack whores walking around. The refinery and pulp mills are basically in the city so you have this ever present stinky smell, its like a mini Fort Mac, except shittier haha. PG is very nice though if you drive ten minutes or more out of town, I went fishing one night after work but didn't catch anything, it was a nice big lake with views of the tail end of the Rocky Mountains in the back ground.

Driving: After the two week PG gig I drove back to Edmonton so as you can imagine, I put some serious miles on my car going from Vic-Van-Castlegar-PG-Etown. It was great driving and the scenery was awesome, I can't even remember half of the towns I drove through but some of them were nice little spots like Chistina Lake and the Cariboo area (100 Mile House), the drives took me way longer than usual, I kept having to stop and get out of my car just to take in the views, BC truly is an amazing place and now I'm fucking depressed being back in the flat lands of Alberta, fuck Edmonton is such a dump I can't believe I've been living here for ten years, what the hell is wrong with me haha?

My next BC adventure: I'm leaving for Fort Mac in a few days to work for a month and after that I will start a two weeks on, two weeks off rotation which is going to be great. My mom is flying to Victoria in early July to spend time with her hippy sister on an island in the Jaun De Fuca straight so I'm going drive out there to visit them and probably buy some camping gear and my scuba gear and do a solid week long fishing/camping/diving trip. I'll likely hit up Tofino and the northern tip of Vancouver Island, if anyone is around let me know.

Chilliwack:
Do any of you have any intel on this town outside of Vancouver? I've only ever passed through but after talking to the BC locals at the jobs I worked on there, this place seems to be a decent place to live and I"m considering moving there. I'd like to live in the lower mainland area but I don't want to be right in Vancouver because its too crowded, shitty traffic and of course the prices are insane. Chilliwack seems to have everything I"m looking for because its close enough to the city that I can get there in a couple of hours but its also close enough to the bush that I can be fishing or camping within a half hour. If any of you have any info to share on Chilliwack, it would be appreciated.

Chilliwack is basically the end of the valley but people still commute every day into Vancouver. I think they are fucked in the head, but to each their own.

I almost moved to Mission a few years ago, I was about to buy a commercial/residential place for $180k which was a steal even back then. It has a train that runs into downtown which was key for me. Also, just across the river is Abbostsford which has a good airport, also key.

Abbotsford is a weird shithole though it might not seem like it. Western Cancer can tell you more, but basically its a wealthy looking town full of strung out meth heads. Like a mini USA, I don't even see that much meth living in the DTES.

I go to Harrison every fall for an "event" and it attracts all sorts of Chilliwack girls who are cornfed gems, so even though I don't know much about Chilliwack itself, the girls are friendly, hot and fun. The area around Chilliwack is amazing, Mt Cheam, Cultus Lake is amazing fun, the Chilliwack river has great rafting, also there is a tonne of dirtbiking out there too.

I say do it. Beautiful spot kinda farm town. Then I can come visit and we can chase farm girls and go fishing.

I'm in town for a short trip, and I've got a date set up tomorrow for dinner at Steamworks. Any ideas of what to bounce to after for a second and third venue?

After that, is there a nice waterfront area you can go to that isn't too busy / congested? Someplace easy to set up for a kiss / make-out. If I can get that far with this chick I'll be happy! I'm not very familiar with the city, and I won't have any cell service so I'm going to try and map everything out beforehand as best as possible.

If you see a Toronto woman in Vancouver, RUN!

Some of the men in Vancouver, BC have been complaining how a steady influx of women from Ontario are causing a whole buncha problems in their city.

Granville Square is isolated and has a decent view of the old town and the port. Just 5 min from Steamworks.

But if you are heading to a couple venues after, on a sunday, I would look at Chill Winston, Guilt & Co downstairs, or the Cambie. Cambie is low key, dirty and drunk, but is usually fun. The previous two are a bit more middle class.

Gastown is sexy anyways, no need to isolate to a place like Granville Sq. Just pull her in under the many big trees and enjoy the fairy lights on the warm summer night.

*Note- Food portions are big at Steamworks (all pubs really), it has knocked many good men off their games in the past, and sent many a woman home with gas pains.

**Team appy. Oysters for the win.
