Well folks this is going to be my last datasheet on Canadian cities and I saved my hometown for last, Halifax Nova Scotia. Now, like most other Canadian cities (except Montreal and Vancouver), I honestly wouldn't plan a trip to Hali from overseas. However, if you are Canadian or American and you answer yes to the following questions you should consider a trip:

1) Do you enjoy binge drinking and craft micro-brews?
2) Do you enjoy pub culture, especially Celtic themed pubs with live music? Do you like alternative rock?
3) Do you enjoy young, vibrant cities with a large student population
4) Do you like walkable, compact cities where you don't need a car?
5) Do you enjoy quaint historical cities with nice British colonial (Victorian) architecture?

If you answered yes, then you will definitely LOVE Halifax! This city of about 350,000 is on the East coast of Canada and is one of the three Maritime provinces (more on the other ones later). One of the best parts of this city are the people, the Haligonians, they are very outgoing, laid back people who, if you introduce yourself as being a visitor from out of town, they will invite you to sit at their table in a bar, or show you around town, no problem. I can't remember how many times I just went out alone because my friends didn't want to come out and went to a pub and within 5 minutes made friends with a crowd of people.

Halifax is all about the PUBS and there are several good ones to choose from. This is where you will find authentic Nova Scotian culture, we have our own songs here and its normal to walk into one of these pubs on a weekend night to find 200 people of all ages hammered drunk singing a NS drinking song such as "Farewell to Nova Scotia" or "barretts Privateer". You would score major points if you know the words to the chorus of each song while at the pub. Nova Scotia means "New Scotland" in latin, so most of these NS style pubs are Celtic themed, here's a list of the best ones:

-The Split crow: go here for "power hour" on Saturday afternoon to see tonnes of piss drunk college kids taking advantage of the $1 pints of draught. This place has been in operation since the late 1700's!

-The Pogue fado: Great place to hit up for both food and live entertainment, 2 levels, it gets packed on the weekends.

-The Lower Deck: An absolute must while in Halifax, any sailor who has passed through this port city (theres been many over the years!) will know this place, lots of cougars here on the weekend.

-The Halifax Alehouse: This place gets bumping! Mostly a younger college crowd and if I can remember correctly it stays open late, 3:30! I've pulled out of here several times, like I say, learn the words to the above songs and once they come on just grab whatever girl you want and take her to the dance floor!

-The Fife and Drum: Attached to the Casino and hotel, live music and a mostly mature crowd, easy to pull a lounge lizard out of here.

There are of course MANY other pubs and watering holes to choose from (Halifax has one of the highest ratios of drinking establishments per capita, in all of North America!), the above are the ones where you'll have a really good time, Nova Scotia style. I usually hit these up around 10-11pm before I move onto a club at around 1 or 2am.

Nightclubs: Nothing too special but a few of them get going pretty good, Haligonians love to party and these places do get packed, every weekend, even in the dead of winter! Oh ya, unlike most other Canadian cities, the nightclubs in Halifax stay open a bit later, most until 3:30 but theres a couple who do last call at 3:30 and keep the tunes playing until 4-4:30. Heres a few of the clubs that I used to frequent in my younger days:

The Palace: Typical meat market, bouncers are dicks (I was banned for two years for making fun of one of them), its attached to the Ale House. Its gets packed, probably around 500 people, some decent drink specials on Sundays and Thursdays. They used to have a wet t-shirt contest on Thursdays and on Sundays a sexy legs (girls) and hard bodies (guys) contest, $500 prizes.

The Dome: This is a big complex of 4 or 5 bars, all under one roof. They used to have $1 shots on Wednesdays, I think they may have ended that after all the bouncers got the living shit beat out of them in a 50 person brawl a couple years back.

Reflections: This is a gay bar, but on Fridays its definitely a mixed crowd, which is cool because you won't see any of the meat head jibronies you'll see at the palace or Dome. This is where the best electronic music (house, trance, jungle, etc) is played, you can easily score disco biscuits here if thats your thing.

Pacifico: A bit more "dressy" than most clubs, I haven't been in years but its where the more ethnic (well as far as Halifax goes anyway) crowd hangs out.

Others: For good food and chill environment, check out the Economy Shoe Shop on Argyll, its a bit upscale, this is where famous people drink while in Town (Pam Anderson, Liam Neeson, harrison Ford have all partied here), theres also a cool, dingy bar down stairs called The Sea Horse, they have good live music, last time I was in Halifax back in October, I saw the death metal band Napalm Death here, full house, packed with metal heads!

The Argyll is great on Thursdays, PACKED with students and it has a huge patio.

Maxwell's Plum: Lots, LOTS of draught on tap here, good place for a cheap bite to eat too, pub style.

Casino Nova Scotia: Its a casino, its on the water, its nice. You can drink here 24/7, but be careful they will cut you off or just not serve you if you appear to drunk, unless you're spending big $, of course!

Strip clubs: theres one, yes only one and its across the water in Dartmouth, Ralph's Place, not worth the trip IMHO.

After the clubs empty (3:30-4am) head over to PIZZA corner, this is where everyone goes for a big jumbo slice of pizza or a greasy donair. Seriously, you have to try a Halifax style donair, its basically a variation of the traditional middle east doner kebab, but back in the 70's a Lebanese guy made up a special spicy one with a unique sweet sauce, its now a staple of the east coast diet! Also, pizza corner is your "last chance for romance" there'll be lots of drunk hotties here, but be careful, there'll also be lots of guys looking to fight if they haven't picked up (another favorite halifax past time).

If clubbing and celtic style bars isn't you thing, try hitting up a live music venue like the Marquee, some of the excellent alt-rock bands to come out of Hali include: Sloan, Matt Mays and El Topedo, the Trews, Wintersleep, Joel Plaskett, etc. Also Buck 65 is from here, he's big, in Europe!

Guys, Halifax is a major STUDENT city, 6 universities, colleges, etc. The student population is around 60-70K, not bad for a city this size and they all live mostly on the peninsula, where all the bars and clubs are and where you should stay if you come here. We all know what students are like, penny pinching pisstanks, so many of the bars cater to this population and you'll often see drunk as fuck girls puking and passing out in the streets, good times!

Ok enough with the night life, what are you going to do during the day? Well you can check out some of Halifax's MANY historical sites, this city was founded in 1749 by the British to defend against the French, who had a fort at Louisbourg, Cape Breton. Take a tour of the Citadel, its smack dab in the middle of town, hard to miss, just look for the clock tower. Or when your drunk ass stumbles out of the Palace at 3:30am, just look across the street! Another fun one would be to get on the "Harbour Hopper" a big green old military vehicule that takes you on an historic tour of Halifax, then you drive to the harbour and go in the water for a water front tour!

Also, one of my favorites in the summer. Before you go to a club, go to the nice boardwalk on the waterfront and hop on the "Tall Ship Silva", for $10 you get on this cool old school schooner, of course theres a live band playing east coast tunes and a full bar! Cruise around the harbour and make some new friends and drinking buddies!

Another good day time activity for an alcoholic, is the Halifax Pub Tour! My buddy used to be a guide, he'd take passengers from the cruise ships (Halifax is a major cruise destination, a good sign guys, tourists come here big time) and bring them into several pubs and give an historical tour of each one and the city itself. Of course, being the pisstank he is, the tourists would get him drunk for free, what a sweet gig eh?

Damn, pretty much everything revolves around drinking here eh? well you could always go deep sea fishing (shark, tuna, halibut, cod, haddock, etc), surfing at Lawrencetown Beach (this isn't Hawaii but they get decent waves, there are sponsored competitions there), whale watching or check out the light house at Peggy's Cove.

I hope you like seafood because we have some of THE BEST, this is indeed Nova Scotia, where most of the worlds lobster comes from

Anyway, I"m gonna add more about my home town later, gotta get some things done. Don't sleep on Halifax guys, if you're a drinker of epic proportions like say me or El Mechanico, you'll love this town!

I'll update this post later with hotels, logistics, more on teh people, culture etc.

PS; the sense of humour is a bit different down there, if you haven't ever seen the show "the Trailer Park Boys" check it out on youtube, its stupid trashy Nova Scotia at its best!

Spot on. I can attest to the Lower Deck and the Fife and Drum. We sometimes go to Halifax instead of St. John's on the way to and from the other side of the pond.

It's a great stop for a few days.

Must confess that I'm not fond of the celtic themed bars. That traditional Irish music just isn't for me. St. Johns is full of them.

They're harsh, all of Canada is these days, I think 0.08 is the limit nation wide. It just isn't worth it, take a cab, especially in a city like Halifax that is so compact and dense, you don't need a car!

Also, if you have a DUI in the states, you may not be allowed to enter Canada, and vice versa!

Are you fuckin kidding me? So if one of those snowbirds from the park gets one in Canada they cant come anymore? What other charges?

I've been arrested about 20 times. I guess someones just going have to pick me up at the north end of Champlain or a 100 mph border pass on the Skidoo

Guess so. It's hit or miss.

haha, ya I'll show up at the New Brunswick Border near Calais Maine on a Polaris skidoo to pick you up EM! Seriously,if you want to come up north, you'd probably have to work out some kind of pardon, I"m sure you can get one easily with your Greek connections!!!

As for the snowbirds getting a DUI, I'm sure they let em get away with it, the Florida gov't knows how important those guys are down there! Its only a matter of time until my dad gets busted in his Caddy coming home half cut from a Bolts game!

From what I read just say no if they question you. I've never been convicted of one anyway but busted for it a few times. The article said that it's not such an issue if you fly there because they are more concerned about the plane?

I went to university in Halifax, good data sheet. Gotta say though, why are you recommending people check out the harbor hopper? That thing is real lame. Other than that I agree with most of what you said.

Also worth mentioning that every year in August Halifax has a buskers festival, apparently the largest street performer festival in the world. I've seen some really fun acts there, so if you're planning a trip for the summer, aim for August.

Hi guys, this is my first post on the forum, but seeing as I grew up in Halifax I thought I would throw my .02 in on this data sheet. Scotian is on point with everything in his post, I'll just break down a few things in more detail...

Side note: I'm not big on the whole Celtic pub style scene myself so most of my nights out have been spent at the late night clubs.

Starting with the Dome, it's one huge bar complex broken up into three main bars. On the top floor you will find Taboo, which is the high-end suit game part of the club. The flyest girls (dresses and heels make up a solid 80% of the females you'll spot on any given night) are in here and the coolest events go on up here. Moving down to the middle floor, you will find Cheers. This is a more casual bar with a good mix of rock music and live bands playing. It's mainly noted for the large amount of single, older (40+) women on the prowl. And finally the bottom floor, the Dome bar itself. Gentlemen, welcome to slut central. Loud, packed, and full of easy tail for the taking. If you have solid dance floor game, you would have to try pretty hard to NOT pick up here. Countless nights I've seen escalations into makeouts, handplay, and a couple times, straight banging on the floor here. Scandalous place, and I love every minute of it! All three bars are open until 3:30am.

Next up we have the Palace, another 3:30am club....and as I said above, Scotian is on point. The bouncers here are dicks. I was also banned, because I was tagging a coat check girl and one of the beta bouncers (Dave if you know who I'm talking about Scotia, the fat dude with the goofy goatee) wasn't too fond of that, and took every chance to try and hassle me when I went. Anyhow, it was pretty much second choice to the Dome for the past several years, but lately I've been told it's making a solid comeback and is filling up pretty nicely on weekends. A good time can be had here, although I personally prefer the Alehouse next door. Again, easy girls to be found. Your biggest enemy here will be the bouncers, at both locales (Palace and Alehouse have the same door staff). Not much to add about the Alehouse itself, it is indeed a younger crowd, late night spot. It gets bumping after 2am.

Moving onto Pacifico, it is indeed a more "dressy" place where suit game will do you wonders. It's also known for it's more ethnic crowd it draws, so if you're looking to pull some sexy Middle Eastern ladies, this should be your first choice. One of my favorites, it's only open until 2am however.

As for the gay bar, Reflections...it is what it is. It's not a bad place to pick up some chicks who are straight freaks, you just have to be able to look past some of the weird shit you'll see in here. Girls using the guys bathroom, and vice versa. Seeing two guys emerge from a bathroom stall with big smiles and giggles...like I said, some strange sights. If you're not a local and you're looking to score some E or blow, this should be your first choice as well (if you're into that sort of thing). I swear pretty much everyone in here is on something. Also open late, until 3:30am...sometimes until 4 however.

The Lower Deck is legendary. Several floors, outdoor area with live bands, filled with a good mix of college aged/cougars. Best bet is to go on a Sunday night. It's been about a year or so since I last visited however, so I'm a little hazy on the closing time. I believe it's a 2am spot, could be wrong though...

Moving away from clubs and nightgame, let's get into what I personally believe are the two most valid daygame spots in the city.

The first is Spring Garden Road. It's a pretty long street going downhill towards the waterfront packed with shops/bars/places to eat. There's a few coffee shops thrown in for good mix too. At any given time of day there are fly girls in abundance all up the street and in the shops.

The second option is daygaming at Saint Mary's University (SMU, otherwise known as Robie St High). Tons, and I do mean TONS of hot young sluts. A good buddy of mine used to live a 5 minute walk away from the campus and we would hit the SMU football games, pick up, and bring them back to his place for an afternoon of debauchery.

Two final side notes:

a) I agree with Chilled, skip the Harbour Hopper, it's whack. Instead, daygame Spring Garden, get a cutie and go for an instadate walk on the waterfront. These girls see it every day but it's still romantic to them and gets them moist.

b) If you see any shady looking brothers hanging around the above clubs (mainly the Dome/Palace), do NOT fuck around with them. I saw a post floating around here before (maybe by you Scotian?) that mentioned North Prestons Finest. These cats are for real and are involved with human trafficking, and a lot of them are packing heat.

Other than that, enjoy our fine city, it doesn't get the recognition I feel it deserves. It is largely a drinking and hook-up culture here, and most of the guys in the venues here have WEAK game, so if you know what you're doing, it is easy pickings.

Great info Hali902 +1 from me and welcome to the forum! You're right about Halifax not getting the recognition it deserves, but it a little off the beaten path!

It is easily one the best cities in Canada for night life, for sure there'a a binge drinking and hook up culture! Looks like not a lot has changed in the past 5 years since I moved, Palace and Dome, except the upper part of the Dome wasn't an up-scale lounge, I forget what it was once called but they used to have a lot of live shows up there, last one I saw there was "Nashville Pussy"!

You're also right about not fucking with the bro's or anyone else in that town, people LOVE to fight there! I don't know how many times I saw students from Ontario or Navy guys from the USA come into Halifax with an attitude like "we gonna run this little town", then see them outside the Palace getting curb stomped: don't end up like this USA navy guy who tried to play hero and got killed a few years back:

I gotta say the Dome is good for easy sluts but the girls there are below average on weekends anyways. There will be a few 9-10's but I have seen way to many overweight 3-4's there too.

Ah, you must be thinking of when it was the Attic that was upstairs and you could get up there from within the club. Now the only access to the top floor is outside.

Unfortunately the above is quite true, there's a lot of muppets hanging out in the Dome, but I believe there's a large enough amount of solid looking ones on the dance floor that with a little bit of game knowledge, you'll have no problems pulling in there.

Ah yes, the Attic, I had many good times up there! Man I miss going out in Halifax, one thing about that city, people may not have a lot of money there, but they sure know how to have a good time! You guys are spoiled down home, shit I had no game back then, no money, broke ass student and I'd still pull decent ass there. The girls, especially uni students are just SO easy to pull, all you gotta say is "so, where do you go to school...blah blah blah, lets get some shots!" LOL

I noticed last time I went home that they shut down Peddlar's pub AND Bubble's Mansion, DAMN!!!!

Yeah, sucks bro...I was a big fan of Peddlers especially! They were both owned by the same guy, he opened a new late night bar, I completely forgot to mention it above...the Toothy Moose. It's open until 3:30am as well and a LOT of the staff who used to work at Peds/Bubbles work there now. They came under fire a couple months ago, there was a scrap that moved outside and somebody got dropped and hit his head on the pavement, ended up dying. HRM has really been lobbying for stricter policies in bars, and pushing bartenders to cut people off sooner.

Great datasheet complemented well by Hali902's posts.

It's has been a while for me (over 10 years), but Halifax is the only city in Canada I've been to that actually has a fun nightlife (complete opposite of Toronto). (Never been to Montreal though.) It is worth checking out. This thread actually makes me want to visit.

I went to Halifax for all of July - my findings:

Night game

Very good. I actually liked the nightlife more than in major Canadian cities like Montreal or Vancouver because it’s concentrated in a small area. You don’t have an overwhelming number of venues to choose from so it’s easy to find the best one

My favorite venue was the Dome- it’s like getting 5 bars for one cover charge. I also liked Pacifico - I’d go there first because it closes at 2am and others close later

Day game

Best place I found was Spring Garden Road. The waterfront is ok - the percentage of young women a bit low though. Downtown could be kind of dead during the day - but maybe certain times of day would be better, such as after work

There’s also the Evolve music festival in July in nearby Truro. Friend of mine got a girl’s number there and laid her on a date after the festival. Same night lay could be hard there because of logistics

Online game

Waste of time. Quality terrible. I did get a lot more responses and dates than in major Canadian cities though. Met a girl who said she was related to one of the stars of Trailer Park Boys and grew up in the trailer park where the show is filmed haha

I mainly used the tinder style matching feature of pof and okcupid, then messaged the girls I had a mutual match with. Maybe doing a search by body type or attractiveness and then cold messaging would have been better

Girls

Impressive quality. The distribution of beauty is about the same as cities known for hot girls such as Montreal. Of course if a city has 1/10th the population it’s going to have 1/10th the number of 10’s. I think the average quality is what counts

They’re friendlier than in the big cities too. I don’t think I got a single rude or harsh rejection. Maybe because they simply get fewer approaches and therefore don’t get sick of them?

I got approached twice in Pacifico. I think I’ve been approached two other times in my life. Both times I was standing at the bar and she either slowly creeped along the bar until she bumped into me or made me part of a selfie while she was taking pictures with her friends. Smooth - girls always have the best openers haha

Where to stay

Near Spring Garden Road. It’s close to the best day and night venues

Bottom line

A good city to visit for the girls. I laid one girl, from night game

Nice city overall considering its size. Kind of boring during the day but if you have a car there are some cool activities nearby like surfing and ziplining. Personally I’d only visit if I could do it low cost, like I did this time

Nice report man, glad you had a good time in my home city. Summer time is usually decent as there's some good festivals to check out and the city gets swamped with cruise ship tourists, but I definitely recommend checking out Halifax during the first two weeks of September when the university students come back, there's around 50,000 students in the city which is a huge concentration, the bars are awesome then. I spent three weeks there back in April and honestly I didn't have too great of a time, mostly because the weather was shit (spring always sucks as its foggy) but I really think that Halifax is best for younger guys 18-25.

After spending a week and a bit in Halifax, here is my review:

Summary: easy town to get laid but an absolute shit hole. Unless you're a fisherman, a drunk or a vagrant you will not like Halifax. Aside from some trails and scenery outside of the city, Halifax is not a desirable place to live. High unemployment, poverty, and the fact that there is literally nothing to do outside of drinking makes it a place I can cross off my list of places I want to live. I had a fun time, but glad to be gone. I should also mention that apparently the time of year I went (this week) isn't the best. And my observation is based on one-week, so it's not all encompassing.

- Two bangs,
- Ridiculously easy to pull in Halifax
- Better night life than Toronto (a club I frequented, cheers, was open until 3 most nights, and 4 on Saturdays )
- Much to my pleasure, Halifax has a lot of foreign girls who stay at hostels near the clubs.
- guys have little to no game
- the middle spoon was my favourite place in the city. Normal looking bar from the inside, but if you say the password that they post the night before, you're taken to a sort of speak easy venue downstairs with solid quality.
- Cheers, Boomers, Pacifico, the bitter end are among some of the clubs I went to

As I said above, pulling in Halifax will be a breeze with a moderate amount of skill. Here's a random story that didn't resuled in a greasy bang:

Friday night I went out to a sports pub with my wingman Chris. We were meeting up with a group of our friends to watch the Toronto Raptors play, but had double date set up for later with two girls we meet previously. After a few beers, we decided to ditch the sausage fest at the pub and head to the girls house.

Stefanie and Jessica were two cute blondes - about a 8, and 7 respectively. We went to their house, had a few shots and drove downtown to go to Boomers. The night went good, I madeout with Stefanie and Chris madeout with Jessica.

Around 2 am the girls wanted to get food. I didn't particularly want to, but my wingman was hungry so we went to freemans, a place that sold greasy unhealthy post-bar food. We sat down, and noticed Stefanie was missing. For fifteen minutes she was MIA, so we left to the car thinking we'd find her. Where the fuck was this girl, I thought. It was a sure thing - a solid bang with an 8 to add to the resume. We eventually found out, standing outside of a different bar with 2 dudes. We got rid of the dudes, and headed back to their place.

On the car ride over, we overheard them talking in the back "they have it, don't worry " Stefanie said. "How much ?" Jessica replied. I thought something fishy was going on, but alas the alcohol induced state and two week cold streak eliminated thoughts of doubt in my mind.

We got to their place, sat on the couch and within a couple of minutes the door rang. Myself and Chris sitting down on the couch looked at each other with a "what the fuck" look. Three guys walked in, and before we could say anything, they sat down on the floor in front of the table and busted out lines of cocaine. They were the most Canadian drug dealers I have ever met - exchanging pleasantries, etc... and I wasn't worried. I figured the girls would do their cocaine and then they'd leave.

The door bell rang again - three more guys walk in, with a duffle bag full of beer and more cocaine. It was 4 am at this point, and I considered leaving, saying to myself that these girls aren't worth it blah blah blah. Chris and I looked at each other and when the drug dealers went outside we decided that we'd tell the guys to get the fuck out of here. The thought of smashing one of the guys faces into the glass table before a brawl ensued in this girls apartment crossed my mind, but the 6 v 2 situation didn't play out too good in my head.

They came inside from their smoke, and the girls offered to let them crash at their place on the floor. I looked at Stefanie, said in leaving, put my shoes on and ditched. Her and Jessica chased my wingman and I downstairs to the lobby, and after apologizing, I proceeded to fuck Stefanie in the back of my friends car, while he gave it to Jessica in the apartment lobby .

We used them, ditched, and knew that those girls would be used and abused by the drug dealers for the rest of the night. Part of me wanted to stay for the sake of the girl, and in hindsight maybe I should have. In saying that, the girls knew what they were getting into. They didn't pay for the cocaine, and knew they were trading it for sex.

In the battle of game vs coke dealing haligogians, the game won. The drug dealers were stuck with sloppy seconds, which I'm sure they enjoyed over and over again.

How is the weather in Halifax? Is it colder than in Montreal in winter? And what about in summer??

Bumping this thread. How's Halifax nowadays? Has it changed much in 7 years? I'll be up that way in August for a family reunion with the degenerate half of my family ?.

Halifax is even more amazing now, still a huge amount of college/university students, if you are into Asians you are in luck. On top of that the food/distillery/cidery and micro brewery scene has exploded in the last couple years.

Halifax has finally caught up to the rest of NA, and it's doing fantastic.

As far as I can tell it hasn’t changed much except the city’s infrastructure is improving and it’s become more diverse but still about 90% white. It’s still a young city so the under 30 crowd will enjoy it the most, the people still drink like fish and there’s plenty of nightlife options with decent looking women and friendly people. As some guys have mentioned, it has a great night life scene, very unpretentious and down-to-earth but you better be prepared for to drink heavily, the locals like to get sloppy.

I’ll be back there in late August for a week or so.

Thanks gents - I'll be there for a couple nights around mid-August if anyone's around, pints on me! Then I'll be heading up to visit some fam in Cape Breton Island. But sounds like Halifax has some of my favorite things - good craft beer and loose women...
