I think being with Russians will definitely help. The issue is not being an undesirable foreigner, but the fact you are not Russian. Rolling with Russians should garner you acceptability. When I was in Russia, I had some of the same issue, but never when I was with my Russian friends.
Luckystar, have you wrote anywhere about your experiences in Russia? I think it would be a good resource for non-white guys to hear some actual first-hand experience instead of just hearsay (of eastern europe also).
I showed up at a Russian club in Moscow on a Friday night, me and an American guy that looked southern European. Went up to the bouncer, was told we needed to be on the list.
Next night, Saturday, showed up at the exact same club, slightly better dressed, but this time accompanied by a Russian guy (clearly well educated and well dressed), and a German guy very fashionably dressed. When asked if we were on the list, the Russian guy smiled and said no in a very confident manner. We were let in with no problem. Ratio was pretty decent at the place.
