How does this work exactly?
There's are a few people I've met here in Argentina, mainly owners of small shops that seem really tough when it comes to guys robbing them. They are willing to fight back, ask to get shown the supposed gun that the robber has, and when it seems for example that their cell phone is about to get stolen and there's no way around it they'll smash it against the floor instead.
Seems bad ass to stand up for yourself like that but people do get killed every once in a while because of standing up as well. I've always had the mentality that I'm willing to let someone take all my shit and even rape me if its going to save my life but I think I'm realizing that its just me being a pussy.
So how do you decide when to throw down, when to walk away, etc?

Some actions by others is just not excusable and need to the dealt with out of principle.
But at the same time fighting a battle you know you will lose is not very smart.
Just use principle and common sense.

This can vary alot, but most of the time the reason these stupid fights come up don't justify a sever huge beating. Just show your opponent who's stronger without the need for breaking his nose and ribs.
If you know he's stronger, walk away man. No need to get your ass kicked for free.

To the extent I've seen, both the winner and the loser of a fight are poison to the best females for the night. Hot chicks have better options than be forced to take a side.
If the venue is large enough, and you still want to game for less than the best, backing down from a true, as opposed to ruse, challenge keeps you in the venue. There is a skill to backing down with grace, learned only from experience, but it has rewards. Generally, a fight challenge will come from someone a lot better known in the venue than you. When you back down, the consolation prize comes from other girls who will approach you, even buying drinks, to tell you how snarly and stupid this opponent is. Move into regular game with these (however, do not even accept apologies from a girl who was the actual subject of the fight challenge -- you could get killed in the parking lot), and don't use physical HV stories. What you are going to get is a SNL from the challenger's former GF, wannabe GFs, or hired guns. Yeah, it's a jealousy setup for her, but one that is not going hurt you tonight.
If you are already off game and pickup doesn't matter, and in your own country, do what you feel is right -- getting pounded a few times is a rite of passage (and maybe a message that you need more attention to your physical condition, anyway).
If you are in a country not your own, always, always, back down, both from locals and from other ex-pats. Assume always that a challenger is far more connected than you. Your fight, win or lose, might mark the beginning of your last few, very uncomfortable, hours in that country.

What situations even come close to starting a fight? I don't even engage in anything that may even possibly lead to a fight. Also, I am in the DC area....there WON'T be any prolonged fights here. Someone is going a gun from somewhere.
