A number of people have speculated (including the Second City Cop blog that I linked to above) that the "attack" was a Grindr date/gay hookup gone wrong, some kind of kinky sex thing, or possibly retribution involving a drug deal.

The problem with all of these scenarios is that, according to police who have reviewed the surveillance footage, Smollett was off-camera for less than 60 seconds. Whatever happened, had to have happened very quickly.

I think he faked the entire thing. Smollett is friends with Kamala Harris who is trying to get an "anti-lynching" law passed. Normal people associate lynching with the distant past. This was likely an attempt to make it appear that "lynching" is a current-day issue that needs to be addressed with legislation.

You're absolutely not wrong, but without the MAGA/lynching aspect, what would this lie really accomplish? The narrative would be "Homophobia and racism still exist", as opposed to "Homophobia and racism have worsened considerably thanks to Trump".
