How to get a CPF number in Brazil
09-29-2011, 04:55 PM
Some store in Florianopolis/Brazil sold me a sim card today and i put credit on it. I tried to get the phone to work and later went with a brazil guy to a phone store where the told him i need a CPF number to activate my sim card.
A cpf is a fiscal number.
It takes weeks to apply for one. i cant travel for 7 weeks in Brazil for 7 weeks without a phone number, i missing out on bangs here.
I asked if i can buy the number of homeless bums or something but many dont even have a number.
Can anyone provide me a number or does anyone know a solution to my phone problem ?
Any help is highly appreciated
Neil

I got a CPF number now from my Brazilian Ex girlfriend, now i only need someone to help me activate it. because i speak only 10 words of portuguese.
Your option two : i went with a guy from the hostel to the TIM store and he tried to solve the problem for me, I told the guy working there that i have a passport but he said i needed the number.
I heard that after activating it still takes 24 hours to activate completely.
Ps, i had strong eye contact with a tall girl workin gat the TIm store. I walked up to her, asked if she spoke English and she said yes. i had no time and straight up asked : Do you want to put your number in my phone ? . She smiled and said she had a boyfriend. well my first day game in Brazil

I recently bought an Oi sim card at a grocery store and I didn't have to have a CPF number. I think it depends on the carrier because I had to have a friend buy my Vivo sim card.

I bought an Oi sim card and a phone at the same time. The woman just put in her CPF or a friend's CPF. I think she just wanted to make the sale.

You don't need a CPF for a pre-paid account. Pay cash and you'll be straight.

CPF is a number like your social number, I don't think you need one if you are not staying for long.
But, here is your answer:
1. You need a RE number (Foreigner register).
2. Then you have to go to a Mail Agency (which are not working right now...They are on a strike) and fill a form and in 30 days your card will come to the address followed.
Therefore, get an Oi number.

Hmm, an oi number. The guy at the TIm store said every one who wants a sim card needs to have an cpf number. At the Claro store they also send me away. I already paid 25 reals for the card + credit so i want to make it work.
i will go back to the store in a few hours with a cpf number.

I had a phone for 2 months in Brazil and I didn't have to register anything, bought a prepaid Claro SIM, pop it in and off you go just topped it up by buying the cards and typing the codes in. I did however need a CPF for booking buses online so I asked the Brazilian chick who worked at my hostel for hers, she gave it to me and I kept a note of it.

I got a cpf number from my Brazilian (ex) girlfriend and got my phone working now after lots of stress. It took an hour at the TIM store. The got the sim card to work in another phone but not in mine. They told me to buy another phone. I went across town to find a used one. All the phones were fucking expensive, even a 5 year old nokia 3310 was 40 dollars. In Holland it would be 10 dollars for a phone like that.
Went back to the hostel and hit the TIM website. i found out that i had to change the network settings. I worked one minute later.
I nearly made a little dance when it finally worked. I need a phone here damnit.
Problem solved.

Don't you have a phone already? Surely you don't buy a new phone in every country you visit?
I use my Nokia from home and put local pre-paid SIMs in where ever I am in the world and they've always work. In Brazil my phone stopped working for a bit so I went to a market in Rio and bought a chinese, mass produced, no branded, phone for cheap and used that. I agree that even old Nokias etc were very expensive, the chinese one worked fine.
Be aware that when you go to different states in Brazil you'll possibly encounter more problems, say your SIM is from Rio then you go to SP you'll have to let the person you're buying the credit from know it's from Rio otherwise the top up won't work.

I think you misunderstood when i said "i need a phone damnit"
I meant that i cant live anywhere without having a usuable phone at hand. i buy sim cards in every country i go. already have quite a collection so far.
Thanks for the tip on the credit top up

I googled "Qual e meu numero de CPF" and I found some idiot who put his CPF number online. The only downside to doing this is that you a message on someone else's birthday instead of your own.

I just got a sim card at VIVO, all I needed was a passport and 60 Reais (10 for the chip and 50 for credit). I paid with credit card, no issues at all.
Only thing that sucks is that I only have 400MB of data for the whole month and I can't buy more for some reason. Really weird.
