Board of directors
05-28-2018, 02:41 PM
I've searched the forum and haven't found any topic like this.
It seems like a dream job but it appears almost impossible to get in, especially without being a member of a political party.
I'm wondering if any of our members have been a member of board of directors or have any intel on it?

I think you're talking about being on the Board of publicly-traded company. This is a sweet gig and comes with a substantial pay and stock options for working a few hours a year.
This is something you get after you've succeeded elsewhere. You need to go out and do something that makes someone want to put you on their board. You will have to have done something that makes you respected and famous. Ideally, being a successful entrepreneur, C-suite executive for a large company or popular retired politician.

You go to the company’s website and apply under “careers”

You have to be a member of some kind of elite (top executive, big investor/fund manager, ex-politician, big-shot lawyer, scientist/expert, entrepreneur, wealthy heir, etc.) to get there, it's not a way in. Exception: some countries where union reps sit on boards, in which case I guess union elite, but still considerably easier.

Create your own company, register it and boom you can be chairman, coo, MD, CFO, Junior Vice President all at the same time.
You need valuable experience in your chosen field for decades to be considered for a directorship (non-exec or exec) for any reputable organisation.

You could probably start out at a non profit or some organization where it's a non-paying gig. Get your name out there, make some connections and try to get on more boards.

There are qualifications you can get to be a director but often these are a requirement once people are on boards rather than a pathway for them to get there.
You could study law, finance or an MBA but generally you also have to be exceptional at something and bring something unique such as experience to the board.
The long way is to get on a board for an NFP, spend a long time there doing it for free in order to learn about governance.
Then they're not really advertised but are offered to people through your business/professional network.

You have to examine the company's corporate bylaws to determine their procedure for appointing their board of directors.
They all have different procedures depending on how savvy their lawyers were when the company was incorporated. Some have procedures for the directors to be voted upon by shareholders. In theory you could weasel your way into a six-figure position with a proxy voting campaign.

Actually just publicly identify as female, park in the disabled spot like you own it and sit down at the table. Challenge anyone who looks or speaks to you like your an angry black woman and within weeks you will be the de-facto CEO and able to negotiate your salary. Win, win, win. For you and and all victims rights. They now have an angry disabled black/white confused trans woman at the helm and will be widely glorified in the business community.

If you think it's tough getting onto a board of directors, try becoming a member of an "international think tank."

I definitely have enjoyed the laughs on this thread, and I will basically agree that you don't just land a board of directors job.
(1) You have to have a track record of success , or some sort of standing in the industry.
(2) Rich Family & Connections helps
(3) One way to actually implement this is to start small. First perhaps as a volunteer on a non profit board, or get a low paying position on the board of directors for a small company or gov't organization. Then you work your way up.
Generally you have to start, or run or be part of critical decision making in a company before people put you on the board of theirs.
